- There are tales and folklore all over the country at every lake of the catfish that live at the dam the sized of a Volkswagen. I wanted to hear it and explore first hand at one of the deepest man made lakes in the Unites States, Fontana Lake! The lake sits on the foothills of Great Smoky Mountain National Park and is 440ft deep with an average depth of 150ft. Join me as we chase the legend of the DAM MONSTER!

We sent three divers down in the dam in my county only one come back he said big catfish got the other two he escaped because he had a sharp stick he stabbed a giant catfish in the eye
These are the stories the people need! Documentary #2 coming soon!
This is the story everybody near a big river or lake hear. All bullshit
First of all there would be records of this and sense there isn’t this is therefore false
@@donniegreathouse72 Stories of Huge Catfish seen by Divers in the Altamaha River near Plant Hatch electric facility.. Stories of Catfish "Bigger than a Man", "as Big as a Volkswagen" have been told.. I Haven't seen them, You Haven't seen them.. Divers saw them.. If you were those Divers then you would feel Different about this.. That's For SURE
@richardtharp1608 stop with the nonsense, an average size man of 6 feet will weigh about 200 pounds, a man as big as a VW would weigh about 800 pounds . Now show us any fresh water North American fish of any species that weighs as much as. Certainly will not be a catfish. Sturgeon and Alligator Gar have the potential for huge size but neither look like a catfish. Stories are blown out of proportion each time it gets told, so after a few months it’s not even the same story
That diver story has been told about every dam in the U.S.
Cool story. They ain’t 500 feet and I talked to the diver.
@wmickinley there's a guy that talked to the divers that saw them at every dam also! Lol
@@stevoky I guess they are all wrong. Nothing gets past you. Go back to Florida
A dam on the little Arkansas River in Wichita ks. In the 60's was reports by Divers inspecting the Dam of Man Size Cats Lurking in the Base of Dam in the Holes. It's True there are 150 lb fish in our Rivers Nation wide. No one understands the feeding Habit of such a Large Fish. You want to catch a massive Cat, they don't Chase Minnows, they eat Big!! All rivers are full of 1 to 5lb fish. Assortment of Flavors. Fish use Energy to Hunt, unless they are laying in a Hole Waiting. Typical Huge FlatHead do this!
No fresh water fish gets as big as a VW Bug. While flatheads get huge , the top out at 100 lbs. and blues around 130 . This is just good entertainment. A diver seeing a huge catfish up close is somewhat startling and therefore estimates of their weight is subjective. Our huge catfish are only second to the sturgeon in size. The fishermen that sets the world record for flathead catfish on rod and reel will have his hands full and will deserve the accolades of being the person while the knowledge and determination to accomplish that
"I can't swim and I know they ain't no catfish that big"😂😂😂 I'm coming to catch the Fontana Lake Monster with a whole rotisserie chicken!
LETS GOOOO
@@COLE_and_JAY I saw the video of them using a 10 lb turkey and catching Goliath Grouper , unbelievable. But our catfish don’t get that big , the record fish is out there somebody just needs to make history and get it on film. You’re the internet talent and we are waiting and watching.
Go show them how we do it in the south Cole...
Every lake dam in our country has a guy with 7 teeth that says a diver saw one bigger than a VW beetle lol
😂🤣😂 maybe it’s down there
@@Frostin_Austin who knows! Great video👌
Heard it all my life also,no matter what river I'm on.
Kind of like the old story of "crybaby bridge". Hell, the county I'm in has 4 of them 😂
een hearing this one since a child
I can tell you for a fact. South Georgia has black panthers. I saw 2 of them jumping out onto the railroad tracks while riding my dirt bike. That was back in 1985. Scared me to death.
@robbieanderson6, Seen Black Panthers in Ben Hill County several times.. Called a Game Warden friend and told him about One that I saw from a Deer stand in Arp Community near my House.. The Warden said that I was Mistaken and it was a HouseCat.. If So, then it was a Solid Black HouseCat 3feet Long with a Longer Tail than its 3foot body.. He Commented again and I Said I'll just Kill it and Show you, But then I'll be in Trouble and you Know it.. He Said "You're Right!!" .. They Know Brother.. THEY KNOW!!
DANG!! You struck gold with this one man!! 100K on the views in a month is amazing. This documentary style has great potential to get you a LOT of views. You did a great job with the storytelling in this video. Nicely done!
Got 2 more “documentaries” in the pipe line
@@Frostin_Austin that is exciting to hear!!! I have subscribed and look forward to what you have to offer up next. I need to change the direction of my channel, "maybe", and came across while looking.....impressive.
There are enough people now that target big catfish that I don't know how the "Diver at the dam/fish the size of a Volkswagen" story still exists. The sad reality is many of the big catfish have been harvested by commercial fishermen and sold to pay lakes and fish markets.
we were catfishing last nite and my buddy brought up this story about the giant catfish at the dam and the divers that I have heard all my life and now today its on RUclips lol.
This is the best video of all time we need more of these
Thanks for the feedback! I plan on rolling out more content like this!
Now, I'm an old man, but I saw this cat when I was 13 or 14. We were fishin Lake Diversion below the spillway. My Dad liked to catch, not fish. We were catching 3-4' gar which were average size. About noon we tired of this and moved to above the spillway to catch supper. Catfish. Later that afternoon I looked down on the spillway and a giant shadow appeared. You could see that beside it two gar + long, one gar wide.
The absolute largest catfish I had ever seen. By my estimate 8'+ long. No one else saw it because I was about 50 yards away from the family. You decide whether I'm lying, that's my story, about 1961 or 62. Texas truly has some large cats!
.
While you saw a shadow from 50 yards away that it’s not an actual fish . And that was almost 60 years ago and memories are fallible. Had you caught that fish and entered it in the record books, then doubt would be erased. Until a true monster catfish is caught and verified and presented to the public in the whole . A catfish as big as a man only exists is the man is a Midget
Thanks for sharing, this was cool and yes it’s all about just being out there👍
It sure is
I catfish this lake every day and I’ve caught a few good sized ones and missed one giant. Definitely has the potential to hold a world record fish
Thanks for the insight!
What's your heaviest yet?
@@killeralltires 41 lb Flathead but I’ve hooked into one that snapped an 50lb leader
@@williamledford6488 wells catfish record is over 600lb?
@@davehart1027 well obviously there aren’t wells catfish in Fontana but there are Flatheads
I built a dam across the creek in my back yard when i was younger. I had to jump across it going to the outhouse. Well my friend told me id better be careful cause he fell in and seen catfish as big as VW's. That skurd me straight.
😂😂
That's so rich😂😂😂
My son, Zakk Royce, has two NC state record blue catfish (in fact that's him in this video in the last photo when he says ("Look at these catfish!"). He's a catfish guide who has caught more 100+lb NC catfish than anybody else. I took him to Fontana lake with our best bait and gear and we actually fished off the dam on July 4th. There were no catfish biting down there and we got harassed by Park Rangers to the point of them searching our truck. They were like "We've never seen anybody try to fish off the dam for big catfish." I did see a huge walleye and got a strike from it. But not a single catfish was seen or bit after fishing all the depths from the bottom uo to bobbers set 10 ft deep. If there are catfish the size of what these folks a tripping on they would be in Europe or Asia maybe South America not the U.S. The biggest blue catfish reported about were around 350 lbs. in the Missouri River in the 19th century. The world record now is 143lbs. from Kerr Lake in VA. That's big enough to spook a very easily spooked person but nothing like these stories. Sharks are many times bigger and divers have to swim around them yet they are supposed scared of a catfish. Naw man, I don't believe it.
Dude! Thanks for chiming in! That’s awesome, Yeah the ones your son has caught are MONSTERS!
@@Frostin_Austin My pleasure! Cool video!
He's talking about Clark's bridge on lake Lanier, heard the same story 50 years ago
They said the same thing when I was a kid at our dam. Lake Texoma. The biggest caught on rod there is 115 lbs. Same stories about divers and Volkswagen sized fish. I think it's like the Richard Geer, Rod Stewart stories. Pre-internet myths.
There are a lot of RUclipsrs who film monster catfish, grouper and other fish. They release them. Then you have RUclipsrs who find these fish to consume or in most cases thrown out.
My cousin caught a flat head out of a local lake here in Ms that was so big he had to strap it across the trunk of his crown Vic.the head was touching the ground on one side and the tail was touching the ground on the other side and he was parading it around the hood all day n it was still breathing
Fish don't bite during periods of high pressure weather systems.Fish right before,or during storms or heavy rain.
My pb catfish was caught in blue bird skies and sunny, the most high pressure system you can get, that’s not always the case
You can't catch a legion with a milk jug 🤨
Ive caught Flathead & Blue Catfish over 70 lbs out of the Cumberland River & Tennesse Rivers in Tennessee. Ive lost many much bigger fish also over the years and who is to say how big Catfish can truly get! Wish they stocked Wels Catfish in the United States....Up to 8 feet and 300 lbs Wow! They do exist for sure!
I grow up in Columbia SC, and heard the same stories of monster cats. If they exist, someone would of caught one approaching the weight that they are talking about.
Nicely done. The mystery lies in the depths. There was a similar story where I grew up of divers going down to clean out a clogged 12’ outlet tube only to encounter a catfish lying crossways.
The legend lives on!
What a videography!!! I’m talking dagum golden globe award winner right here
Thank you! It was a quick, fun project!
I threw a little black tadpole looking thing in to my aquarium with a bunch of Goldfish. Within a year, it was 6 inch long channel cat and was swallowing whole, goldfish 3 times it's size somehow whenever I wasn't looking. Crazy predators.
Im lucky Grew up love catfishing. They caught world record flathead 2 hrs from where i live in wichita ks.Caught at elk city res.125 lbs 1993 i believe
Wow! So cool!
Try Lake Texoma and the Tennessee River, my 2 Favorite's for Blue's and Flatheads......
And if you get your Bait from the Bait Shop, you will need a Guide........🤣🤣🍺🍺
I lived 25 min from lake lanier for 50 yrs and heard the same stories. Moved to North Alabama and i hear the same stories here. Maybe the deeper the water the bigger the story...
Cool video Brother, we have all heard the Story and its something that keeps us all Looking for that one Fish. Like you said The Pursuit. I enjoyed the video
Thanks bro!
My great Uncles were Commercial fishermen in the 60's in north eastern Missouri. I have seen several blue cats weigh over a hundred lbs caught in the Mississippi.
We know to less about catfish, I'm fishing in Austria in a lake , that measures at least 462ft and a catfish with 8 inches started 'walking' with me... and I lost him...
Long ago, i Russia, they caught catfish, longer than a VW ...
This looks like serious Bigfoot territory
It is!
Yip@@Frostin_Austin
Super Squatchy
bigfoot🤣🤣🤣🤦♂
Awesome video man, this one is taking off! Congrats
Thanks a ton!
That Volkswagen sized catfish story was printed in Southern Living magazine in the early 1980's! 😂
I had to bring it to life 40 years later 😂
Same story from the Cape Fear River in eastern NC. If I was trying to catch the world record blue catfish, I'd go Kerr Lake Virginia where the current world record was caught at 143 pounds. There's got to be more than one there. They catch them all the time there over 100 pounds.
I want to see the pictures that the divers supposedly took why they were down there
Hello, catfish bite all day long and at night. I have caught them in the Hudson River in Terrytown., also fish in the Cataba River system in SC mainly under the dams in full on sun, 95 degrees.
You gained a subscriber. Great videography. Already knew the outcome but was still a fun video start to finish
Thanks man!
@@Frostin_Austin very welcome. Ready to go back and watch your others now
I heard the same story growing up in Lake City TN near the Norris Damn. I did see a pic hanging up on the wall of the Norris marina back in the 70's of a catfish that was hanging out either side of a trunk of a car.
We have the EXACT same legend about the dam near where I grew up. I think everyone in America has heard this legend. The location is the only part of the legend that changes. It's funny how it's spread. Even the part about them being bigger than a VW.
Hahaha yeah, same legend EVERYWHERE
I enjoyed your video. And yes I agree that i've heard this story too I live in pennsylvania and there's been stories of people down the old Philadelphia naval yard, claiming to see catfish 6 7 8 plus feet long And that I'm aware of the world record is the may. Kong giant catfish at 680 pounds. No, when I was in the military, I spent time in Central America and there are definitely monster Catfish there in that Amazon river and its tributaries. Again, very well. Enjoy your video and as you said. It's also about being a nature looking forward to watching more. Your adventures and living more of my own thank you, sir. Have a blessed day. Oh, and I forgot the most important thing. Life's short FISH HARD
I am here in maine and i've heard the stories about the catfish that are longer than men. And Is out way Is three people
There are black Panthers in Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia area. I have seen one myself and pictures with my own eyes.
Good video 😎🎣🎣💪
The lake in Murphy NC which is Hiawassee lake my dad had one on for 3 hours and 5 minutes before it broke the line. Pulled us around in a John boat the whole time. That was 20 years ago

I laugh in good humor because I have heard this story everywhere I have ever been fishing or working that had a dam. Just a friendly legend that entertains all that hear them goafter them folk and you might have your own story that survives history. I have heard about the divers, but I have never heard from the actual divers HMMM.
Agreed 😂
I could listen to the guy at 6:30 all day.
Ahaha he’s the best!
I bought one of the aqua view cameras when they first came out. You could see fish clear but you cant tell the size because you have nothing to relate too. Sure some fish were larger than other but were they 1 lb and 4lb fish or 3lb and 10lb. The divers were looking thru mask underwater.
Bro said “catching the dam monster” and didn’t get nothing 😂
I double suck 🤦🏽♂️
2:39 Atta man! GSMR!!
The tallest straight vertical axis dam is in Idaho on the North fork of the clearwater river it is 715 feet deep at the dam, sure to have monster catfishes.
See I’ve of Volkswagen’s from what I hear
Hallo from Germany, great Video , i am fishing for Wels Catfish here in Germany, france and italy , there i got Catfish Up to almost 8 foot Long .
Stay on and the Monster will Show up
Go getchye one!
Fish the bottom of lake. Catfish are bottom feeders. Also use chicken livers that are old and rotten.
We are not in the jungle book. 😂
You would be correct 😂
That is hilarious . I though that was a local legend around here . I live in New Hampshire and there is a Dam on the Connecticut river and I have heard from several people none who know each other same story . There were divers fixing or welding the dam years ago and they came back up and quit or wouldn’t go back down because there were fish the size of Volkswagens down there . Even the same car brand was in our local myth as well . Blew my mind hearing them explain the stories sounds exactly how they have been explained to me here locally
The legend is everywhere!
Could be paddlefish?
Hey from Greensboro! Diggin the NC content dude. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
I'm pretty sure the thermocline theory is wrong. Definitely oxygen down there and I think you have to get to the bottom with your bait. We got lake trout in 600 foot water in the great lakes and Canada. Gotta love the old legends, keeps you thinking, what if?
Take some poles out there go few times maybe catch a giant good video
There’s 80-120lb blues all over North Carolina / South Carolina
I’m sure if you see one of those fight while down diving it does look huge !! lol.
For sure bro!
The big catfish are in deep lakes here in 🕸 westvirginia >I've caught them myself.
This video was literally just yapachino
The fish of mine you showed is from Missouri, no where near the east coast, just an fyi :)
When I lived in N.C., I heard about someone catching a catfish that was 600 pounds in that lake. The guy had 6 people with him, and they could not get the fish out of the water.
😳😳😳 they exist!
I'm from Western North Carolina Bryson City actually actually catfished a lot jug line limb line and rod and I've actually hooked into two that broke a deep sea roller rod and 80 lb braid me and my buddies would also Cornish hens on 5-gallon buckets with steel cables and I've lost two buckets as big as Volkswagens I don't know but I know there's some really big cats in there I have recently moved to Wisconsin and still go back and finish quite often
🇺🇸 I knew the stories were true
Man absolutely love this mini-documentary Austin!!! Any chance these monster fish are giant white sturgeon!? Largest ever caught according to google is 1,100 pounds??
I have heard that story about South Holston lake in Virginia. 😅
I was talking about big blue catfish in the 100lb range
The World Record Blue Cat is 143 LBS caught at Kerr Lake in North central NC but it shares its waters with Southern Va. IF you want to talk bigger than that You need to put it on a scale, otherwise it’s just BS!
I live in the smokeys I have seen black panthers more then 2 times. And when they scream it sounds like a crazy women yelling at top of her lungs some scary stuff walking in the holler alone at night and hear it .
But hey I'm only born and raised here what do I know .
Don't cut bluegill.
They make vibrations and more importantly they make a sound, a deep sonar location type sound that catfish run to.
They say the same thing about the ohio river dams here in kentucky.
"Big as volkswagon"
Scared divers, etc.
When I go after big catfish I use fifty five gallon drums those big catfish just swim off with those milk jugs the catfish I catch pull those fifty five gallon drums under water for a hour at a time
Kram fish market in St Louis Missouri had a fish checked in at 333 lbs on the books. I saw it in the book
Whatttttt
Aren’t you afraid you’ll lose your boat?
In Ontario they tell that story with a little bit of a twist regarding the dams along the Trent river. It's a musky the size of a Volkswagen.
The musky 💩😂
Nicely done
Thanks!
It takes a Lifetime to Hook-up on a Monster. Jugs "Really " i don't think so! Try an 1/4" steel cable on a 6" Buthers Meat Hook with a 5 lb Carp or even a Big Cat fish. You won't get them overnight, it takes a lifetime of fishing
Agreed!
Lake Emory holds monsters. Second only to Fontana
I live in the upstate of SC and I have heard the same thing about lake Jocasse, and they say the same thing about catfish the size of VW bugs and eyes the size of hub caps. And you will need a live goat a pontoon boat that's connected to a 4wd that's tied off to a white oak in order to get the fish in lol.
I have head the same story about catfish the size of vw bug at ky lake damn in western ky. So I believe it I don't know never seen a catfish that big around ky or Barkley lake
No Picture-------No Fish------Period!!!!!!!!
We caught those fish from 11pm until 2am.
Jug fishing isn't fishing. If it's not on a rod and reel it doesn't count.
And I've never caught over a 45lb flat head using brim. You need small 8in to 6in bull head catfish or just baby cats that size and use them live to get the big 60lb + catfish
My best big fish night came on Halloween night,1993.While fishing a 1 and 1/8th oz. doll fly with pork rind we caught 6 smallmouth. The biggest was a 9 lb 6 oz smallmouth and the smallest was 6 lb 2 ounces.Just as we got to the lake in our 14 foot aluminum boat, with 9 hp,a huge storm hit us flash flooding and heavy duty lightning. We stayed in a boat slip, then once the storm cleared out,we headed out.We mounted all 6 fish, and me and my brother still have them hanging on the wall.
What state??

Need an address, let's film documentary #3!
Tell me what size fish would it take to pull a gallon jug underwater and hold it down ... I witnessed it and I waited for thirty five minutes and it never surfaced again.
Check out storys of the bridge colapas at point plesint on the ohio river same tell . Drivers seen big cats whouldnt go back down .
Im probably wrong, but could be paddlefish? Like, theyre filter feeders, they get massive, like hundreds of pounds, and they have a bill , so you would have say a bulky couple hundreds of pound fish a few feet of snout? It would look massive, would have to look it up, but from memory think theres confirmed fish over 450 pounds?
You need to put a whole chicken on a monster hook with solid rod with miniwinch reel. You will get the bigger ones like this...night time is the best time for catfish . You can also use a fish up to 2 pounds as bait.
Same legend exists on Herrington lake in ky. It is nearly 300 ft deep. I’ve heard rumors of people backing tow trucks up to the bluff walls and using turkeys as bait🤣
You didn’t put a long enough line to the bottom I mean if you were the size of a Volkswagen would you swim to the surface and pass up all kinds of fish lol
I hate to tell you dude but the black panther story you might think there is no way but I’m here to tell you I live in east Texas by all the marsh about 50 miles from the Louisiana line out in the middle of the freaking marsh and when I was a kid fishing with my dad in a little pond like area that came off the little bayou next to it and around this area is nothing but marsh for miles and miles and miles and one day we were fishing in a little 14 foot boat in the middle of it and late in the evening my dad said what is that and around this pond area was built up high like a high levy and the grass was short but up ontop walking the edge of it my dad asked what was that it looked like a big ass cat so we trolled closer and it was a black panther with the long swooping tail clear as day we saw this thing walking the levy which back then we didn’t have cell phones so my dad told people at work and told a game warden what we saw and he couldn’t believe it he thought we might have saw a bob cat or a mountain lion even though those arnt common in that area so as time went on about 6 months later when it got cold there was a small two lane highway that ran along the side of this place I’m talking about and the game warden got a report about a dead bear on the interstate which we don’t have but when he got to the animal reported it end up being a black panther that got hit by a car literally 400 yards from the area we saw it and it was on the news and paper and is the first ever recorded black panther in that area they don’t know if it was wild or if somebody had it illegal and let it out but sure enough it was identified and all those people that thought we were crazy told us they couldn’t believe it so my point is don’t say there can’t be something somewhere or that your friends are crazy thinking they saw something because trust me it can be true.
Iv hear that about several lakes I'd have to see it
SMH. That picture of Luke. That fish was caught on the Missouri River.
The ending was stupid. Rod and reel not jug line.
Y’all didn’t even show me one fish..
Next time use a 2 lb carp on a rod
You didn't even catch a monster cat at all? Wow what a dud
big as vws same thing they said about the bagnal dam on the lake of the ozarks.
