Footage from the 1988 Seoul Olympics in which Ukrainian Olympic legend Sergey Bubka claims Gold and breaks the Olympic record in the process in the Pole Vault.
In Seoul 1988, Bubka had his first opportunity to shine in the Olympic Games, having stayed out of Los Angeles four years earlier due to the Soviet Union boycott.
Representing the USSR in Seoul, Sergey Bubka broke the Olympic record with a 5.90m mark which also gave him the Olympic gold medal. His fellow Soviets Rodion Gataullin and Grigoriy Yegorov join him on the podium.
Bubka would still compete in the Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee.

As a kid, growing up you'd hear Bubka beating his own record time and again. He was and is a legend in a true sense.
I was a pole vaulter in high school when Sergey was setting and repeatedly breaking his own records. Even though it was the cold war, and we were on opposite sides of the iron curtain, we didn't care; my pole vault buddies and I worshiped him. We understood it wasn't about politics, it was about sportsmanship and he was an absolute rock star to us and revered like no other. I wish I could've met him back then. For the record, I was best at my school at the time and could only clear a paltry 13 1/2 ft. in competition (not even in the same universe as Sergey.) What an amazing athlete. :)
Imagine being so good, the only record you can break is yours.

Perhaps even the best Track and field athletic ever. Pole vaulting is by far the hardest event to master. Strength, speed and technique has to be perfect.

Bubka is a super-athlete, the pinnacle of all world sport in history, a product of Soviet training for athletes. The whole sport reached the limit of human capabilities precisely at the end of the 80s, and then technologies began to dominate: Bubka's pole was metal, for example, while modern jumpers have a composite one, etc. Maradona was the pinnacle of football. In hockey, the Canada Cup-87 was a milestone

Great Bubka, respect for him,,, From Poland
The pleasure of watching Sergei Buhka on the pole vault. I saw this very Olympics of 1988 in Seoul, I was 20 years old, and since then I have seen all Olympics, especially the Athletics events.
Pole vault looks like so much fun! Great video!
Habe ihm damals schon gern zugeschaut. Für mich eine Legende !!!
I was in class third then. still remember that.
He is the greatest of all time. Bubka's records can only be beaten by technology.
I was there at the main stadium, on the same side of the vault, when he was competing that day....he won the gold! Then, he called for the bar to be set at the height of 20 feet (of course, it was measured in meters, so just over 6-meters-something). We were excited to see that he was in fine form and going to be the first to break 20 feet! He went down to get ready at the end of the runway....then....just then, the Seoul Olympic medal ceremony was rolled out and -- believe it or not -- went right across the runway for the Bubka's vault. Can you believe? (if i am not mistaken it was the ceremony for men's long jump...) Needless to say, he was not happy as it obviously broke his concentration and he strode down and put his pole in the tube and didn't go for the "20 feet." Gosh, we were pumped when he called for the "20 feet." If only a track administrator had said ..... "Hey, wait folks, let this last vaulter GO! Then, roll out the carpet and bring the podium and medals."
Ah, too bad he was distracted and stopped. He cleared the 5.90 m (19'4"") jump by at least 6 inches. I stopped pole vaulting at 16 years old (1979), at a height of 4.65 meters (15'3"). I broke my arm when I landed next to the pole vault mats. Six months prior to that I shattered a fiber glass pole to pieces during competition. In each case I was distracted by curious people coming too close while I was vaulting. It's too dangerous for a vaulter to be distracted, and there should be a fenced barrier to prevent accidents.
Trivias like this...are a gold of stories. Thanks @David waters
Virtually the same thing happened the year before in the World Championships in Rome. After he had won, the bar was set at a world record height, and just as he started his run-up the PA system blared away with the intro music for a victory ceremony. He aborted his attempt, and after the victory ceremony made one weak failed attempt and then called it a night. Needless to say, the crowd was ripped at the meet organizers.
