I have been playing the harmonica for 50 years with lip pursing method. During my childhood I could not afford to buy a Hohner instrument advised by the harmonica teacher and also could not afford to go to pay his fee. So, at that time, I bought a Hero harmonica (made in China) from a roadside shop for 18 rupees and self-taught myself Saregama, and other simple tunes. Thereafter, I bought a chromatic harmonica and learned more songs, mostly Hindi film songs but I had never played with tongue blocking technique as I was not aware of it. When I became aware, I had already cultivated lip pursing habit and found it very hard to play with tongue blocking. After watching this tutorial, I tried tongue blocking and made a small but positive progress. Thank you, Arindam, for explaining the technique so nicely. I am determined to learn the method from your video 😊🙏
I live in a town where no one is there to teach me harmonica, and I've been playing my harmonica for about a year only using lip pursing, I always wanted to learn lip blocking and blues tones but I couldn't find any teacher or guide... Watching your videos motivates me more and more... Please keep uploading ❤️❤️❤️
Really Sir no words to say .You are marvelous. What a art .Mere to sir ke oopar se baaten nikal rahin hain..I am a 68 year old student learning harmonica from Shimla HP. for the last 6 7 months able to play 5 6 songs don't know right or wrong. Kaash aapke nazdeek hota to accha seekh leta. So all the best and thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot. After searching a lot I finally got to see exactly how to place the tongue and blow. Your command over English and Hindi are as good as your playing. God bless you.

Nice sir I have started learning the Harmonica.. So I will try my the best.. And thanks for correct notations.. And awareness from wrong notations.. I hope I will correct tongue blockage when i have learning. Thanks sir ji.
🙏 Arindam Sir, you have well explained.I admire you. I'm a student trying to learn harmonica. If notation will be supplied, well, then I can try to play otherwise not. Thanks for your valuable suggestions.
Tongue blocking was a mystery until I saw this video. You have explained everything crisply and with minute details. Superb, great video by an accomplished tutor. My salute to you, Arindam ji 🙏🙏
Sir I always give up soon but maybe this time I will do more hard work and get it right. If tomorrow I end up learning to play harmonica the credit would go to you.
With the help of your this video I learnt tung blocking... Please post another video on octive playing using tung blocking. Also please post video of other techniques of harmonica playing..
thank you Arindam very helpful I am about to get there now all this while i was not doing it right until i watched your video aab to maza hi auur hai bajane ka(:-)
Very nice and instructive tutorial Arindam Dada I have got into the habit of using uprolled tongue to do the blocking. I find that better to play the draw notes. I am a beginner Any comments on that so that I improve?
One more advantage of tongue block technique(my opinion)--air coming from lung is warm and contains less moisture , so problem of sticky valve is minimal where as air blown from mouth cavity by pucker method contains more moisture and enhance the problem of sticky valve. What is your comment Arindham??
I am trying to learn this technique and my opinion based on my experience so far is that it's the other way round - but who knows, maybe I'm not doing it perfectly ... I'm getting better with getting single notes and I know it will improve with time. The subtle adjustments cannot be explained, as it's an internal process .. it will come with experimentation. But the saliva and moisture problem has me worried. I can't think of any way around it. The saliva in particular forces me to pause every few seconds and swallow. The moisture condensation is not causing any problem right now but then I'm playing on a valveless model (Forerunner). With a valved model I don't know how it will fare.
Eyy! So nice to see you entering in tutorials. I have bunch of ideas that you can do videos upon but obviously you do you! However, videos on techniques are more useful than videos that give only song notations! Keep it up!
Tnks Arindam Daa, very explanatory video. While i was practicing tongue blocking i am facing few issues. I am getting lot of saliva. Left to right is still ok but while i am playing from right to left, like Sa-Ni-Da-Pa-Ma...... i start blowing saliva into the harmonica and is short of breath with lot of air leaking. Bujte parchi naa teek practice korchi na bhool porchi. Ekthu guide koro.
Arindamda,a little confusion.Just Tongue blocking achieves what if you are playing a single note? Octave playing needs tongue blocking I can understand but what is the advantage if we are playing single notes only? Please guide. Thanks dir.
SIRJI, I have a small request. Can you make a video on tongue slapping? I am doing it, but I feel it can be much better. My problem is that I can't keep the rhythm going throughout the song or whereever it's needed... See if you can do a video on this one...!!! Thank you so much ❤️🙏🙏
Hello Arindam! Does one need to learn more than one tongue position? I ask because I also wanted a demo by Mr. Sukanta G, and I saw that he keeps the tongue pointed upwards. You keep it pointed downwards.
I have been playing the harmonica for 50 years with lip pursing method. During my childhood I could not afford to buy a Hohner instrument advised by the harmonica teacher and also could not afford to go to pay his fee. Very nice and instructive tutorial Arindam Dada I have got into the habit of using uprolled tongue to do the blocking. I find that better to play the draw notes. I am a beginner Any comments on that so that I improve?
Uprolled tongue is also used by some people. I don't use it, so no specific comments really....
But I think it can be successfully used to achieve the functions of tongue blocking, similar to the down rolled tongue.
@@asen80gmailcom Dada pl.tell me the harmonica east top is of 10 or 12 holes, and where it is available.
One more advantage of tongue block technique(my opinion)--air coming from lung is warm and contains less moisture , so problem of sticky valve is minimal where as air blown from mouth cavity by pucker method contains more moisture and enhance the problem of sticky valve. Well I never thought of this, but there may be a point, I think now....

This should lessen with more practice. Also, try to keep your head upright or even tilted upward at a small angle - should help :D Keep practising!
