  • After all these years, I finally have a Nikon D700.
    This is one of the cameras that I have actively "wanted" longer than any other. From aesthetics to build quality - from the sensor used to the image processing - From ergonomics of the camera to the famous photographers who have used and loved it - For so many reasons and for so many years, I have wanted one. Now, I finally have it.
    Here is the unboxing while I talk a bit about how and why I finally got this legendary camera, as well as some related thoughts on the photography topic.

    You're gonna love it! I own 3 and waited to get ones that were pristine with low SCs and great prices. All of them came with MDs and accessories. I have a D850 but use the D700 more often. The color rendition from the Mitsubishi (?) sensor is superb. Noise even at 3400 ISO is pleasing. Have fun!

    PS. I'd also suggest having a look at the legacy Nikkor AF-D lenses (especially 24/2.8, 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.8) - they go extremely well with this beauty :)

      I've used the 35mm and 50mm af-d lenses. I haven't tried the 85mm but I have heard a lot of good things, such as very fast and accurate focusing, etc. I will be keeping an eye out for them.

      I remember when these were still expensive. Then I watched the price drop lower and lower, to a point where (here locally) you could pretty routinely find them for around $200 or $250. Then, suddenly, they were getting harder to find and the price started to go up again. I was worried I might never get one. Can't wait to put this one through its paces.

    Hi Skyler! I’m sincerely really excited for you! Congratulations!
    I frequently think about your D3s review - in my opinion one of the best reviews on RUclips- and now that you bought a D700 I’m looking forward to seeing your reviews and feedback of it.
    Once again, congratulations.

    Congrats, bought a couple of them from an estate sale untested without a working battery, one had 40k shots in great shape, but the other looks completely new. Worth it 100%, love the files.
    AF-S 50/1.8G is a great lens to use with it, had to sell it with the other body, I will probably get another as it is just hard to find anything similar at that price range.

    I bought a D700 about a year ago after using a Nikon F2 I bought in 1974 while in the service. I wanted a digital camera that used the excellent Nikkor lenses I have. Good solid camera that works just fine, making pictures every bit as good as the ones made by my more modern Fuji and Leica cameras. Again, it uses that beautiful and affordable Nikkor glass. Congratulations and have fun!

      I love hearing stories like this, about someone who bought a camera and not only used it, but used it for many years. I would have to agree on the Nikkor lenses. Especially the old manual focus stuff. I even owned a lot of the old Nikkor-Q lenses and was amazed by the image quality.

    Congrats on your new camera. Everything worked out awesome for you.
    I can relate to your experience. Since 2016, I wanted a 7D Mark II. When I had the money, I didn't have the time to shoot with it. When I had the time, I didn't have the money. Over the years, I looked at a number of 7Ds, but there always seemed to be something that got in the way. For example, the seller was sketchy or a CF pin was bent etc. This fall, I finally found one that ticked all the right boxes and the deal was good. I'll never know why it took the time it did to get my 7D2, but it was worthy the wait.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  4 месяца назад +1

      The waiting seems annoying or frustrating, but has a funny way of becoming one of the best parts of the story when we think back on it. I am glad you finally got the 7Dii. Did it live up to your expectations?

    • @CanoeToNewOrleans
      @CanoeToNewOrleans 4 месяца назад

      That's a good point. The story wouldn't be as good if I had bought the first 7D2 I saw. Yes, I'm happy with the camera. In fact, it's a better than what I was hoping for. I was looking for a camera with 20 000 to 50 000 clicks. The one I found only had 8700. The guy at the camera store didn't know its background, but he figured it was probably an older guy with some money who first bought it in order to have a good camera and he probably sold it to upgrade to mirrorless. The former owner didn't use it much so there's hardly a scratch. I bought it to shoot hockey games. The frame rate will help capture action shots while the anti-flicker will come in handy for games under artificial lights, which is what most rinks have. @@SkylerKing

    Great to hear how excited you were to unbox this, I've had this exact same feeling when I recently purchased my 5D classic.
    I've always been a fan of Nikon image quality but I've also hated the way their camera's handle and operate, there's something to the button/menu layouts that doesn't resonate well with me. Can't really put a finger on what exactly is that makes me feel this way. Also the reason I prefer to use Canon systems over any other to this point.
    That being said, after watching this video I'm kinda curious to how a D700 feels and operates, it might be the odd one out and surprise me in ways I did not expect.
    Looking forward to your upcoming D700 content :)

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  4 месяца назад +1

      You sound similar to me. I have owned a lot of Nikons. I have really liked the output (and loved it, with some of them) but generally speaking, aside from being happy with the image quality, I don't really like most of their cameras. The ergonomics, menus, button layout, etc, just isn't intuitive for me. Sure, I get "used to it" but it never feels "right". The D3s is the only Nikon I ever owned that, despite being a Nikon, felt nearly perfect thanks to it's layout and controls.
      It really could go either way with this D700. I guess I will brace for the worst and hope for the best.

    Excited for you man, the D700 seems to be the spiritual brethren of the 5D so I look forward to hearing more about how you like it comparatively. Of course you may feel that they aren't comparible and that would be equally interesting to hear about. I look forward to visiting China myself someday to experience the culture and hopefully visit the great Tea plantations and participate in Gong Fu tea sessions.

      I am excited to get more familiar with the D700. I am very curious about how it will compare to the 5D Classic, since they have similar legendary status. I have intentionally avoided China for a variety of reasons, only spending considerable time in Hong Kong (many trips over several years) before the CCP started screwing things up over there. I have only been back to Hong Kong once, since then, and didn't like what I saw.

    • @davyboyo

      @@SkylerKing that's such a shame to hear, I feel for the population who must live and work under this oppressive system. Hong Kong certainly looks like an epic photography destination but perhaps I will look more closely at Taiwan as a destination in preference, still lots of great Tea plantations to visit there in Taiwan too 😊

    • @SkylerKing

      Oh, absolutely. Taiwan is very serious about tea and seem to have their own unique spin on "tea culture" along with the typical, more traditional things you would expect. In fact, one of my wife's uncles own a tea farm/business and his tea is some of the best I have ever tasted.

    I agree with Max, I got a D700 a few months ago after using my favorite Canons (1ds II and 5D), and although the output is quite nice I just don't love the controls. I always feel like the menu is a hassle to navigate through also. There's nothing more straight forward than the old Canons for me. Another thing is for some reason I don't quite like the way greens look on Nikons, they're almost like a highlighter green in some cases. But low light is incredible on this camera. Good overall but not a favorite.
    I thought I'd ask, have you tried the early 1d series? They're built like absolute tanks, better than the 5D series. I was very impressed by the 1ds II from 2004. I actually like it more than the 5D Classic for its special smoothness yet great sharpness, and incredible colors. Skin tones are always very good. It became my go to studio camera. I'd definitely recommend giving it a go as it retailed for 8000 originally and I got mine for 100€..

      @SkylerKing  4 месяца назад +1

      I have been wanting to get a 1D series camera for years, came close to owning one a few times, but it hasn't happened yet. Of course, I want to try the original 1D for the Kodak CCD (primarily). But really, I have have seen and heard so many good things about all of the 1D series cameras that I would like to try any of them.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  29 дней назад

      I feel like the Z8 is the spiritual successor to the D700. The D3 was a revolutionary jump for Nikon, then they came out with the D700 which was 95% of the same camera in a smaller body at a lower price. Jump forward 15 years and you have the Z9 being a revolutionary jump forward for Nikon. Then they released the Z8, which is 95% the same camera in a smaller body with a lower price.

    • @aliskandari
      @aliskandari 29 дней назад

      @@SkylerKingagree, Z9/Z8 case is very similar to D3/D700. And modern AF technology finally came to the point where I can use the classic DSLR (or even SLR) "point-focus-compose-shoot" technique again 😅 so handling Z8 is indeed may be considered somewhat similar to D700.
