You are so right about talking to the locals especially the older residents. Once I was hunting a park over several days when a guy ask me did I find anything good? I said not really and showed him come clad and aluminum junk. He said you need to be hunting on that hill on the back side of the park. I asked why? He said his neighbor always was showing him Civil War relics back in the late 70's that he found on or around that hill overlooking the creek. Sure enough, move over to that area and after about an hour found a carved 3 ringer. Found other goodies on subsequent hunts. So when some ask you if you found anything good, maybe engage in a conversation and glean some valuable history about where you are hunting. It is all about the history of people being where you wish to hunt.

Yeah, you’re right. And I agree with what you said about finding gold. So many times I’ve been digging pull tabs and can slaw just daydreaming and digging junk when all of a sudden… one of the pull tabs is not a pull tab. It’s a gold ring. I’ve found a lot of gold. But I’ve dug up a hundred times as much junk to get all that gold.
A lot of people think they’re going to buy a metal detector and go out and find treasure. You’re going to find lots of trash. And every once in a while, a piece of treasure.

Many times I have been in a park and dig up a ring and someone in the park watches me dig it. They say "I am going to buy a detector tomorrow". I try not yo discourage them from getting a detector, but I show them my bag full of small bits of foil and canslaw, dozens of pulltabs bottlecaps. Their next words are usually "SCREW THAT". Words cannot express my joy when I hear "SCREW THAT". Metal detecting is not reality TV man. 99% junk is what we get.

i understand about parks. I have a 30 acre park, literally across the street. One day I was working the tot lot and a freind of ours who has lived out here for many years, pointed out that the current tot lot was not where it is today. He pointed to another location. I pulled silver out of there for 6 months. Old. All marked Sterling. Another park goer, older gentleman, said he lived here by the park his whole life. Said the trees were so thick, you could not see the other side of the park. Used to ride horses through it. Have only found 2 silver Rosies and a 1935 Washinton in this park as far as coins go, but lots of jewlery. Also found a bottle dump, and another resident told me back in the depression, a shanty town was built along the creek that runs through the park. Have never hunted the creek though. I should one day.

Silver hasn't been in circulation for a long time so most of it is deep in the soil and the shallower coins have been found by detectoris

The park I hunt at one time was our county fair grounds/horse race track. It 20 acres, plenty of other activity for 200 years. Most people i detect with dismiss this place , too much trash/ nothing left to find. 2 years ago they tore out a row of old bushes and trees, old timer walked by and said to me that area was where they took money to enter fair grounds. Turns out it was as my best silver coin day. 9 silvers . I feel people don’t believe me with all coins I’ve pulled from this park. Last year alone I got 22 IHP s . Clear out that Modern trash and all will be revealed.

A lot of people don't understand that parks can often be the last bit of land where an old farm house stood ages ago as the farm land was split up and sold over time. They make the old farm house lot a park. I've found so many unknown old home sites in common parks where I live. Listen for the iron! Don't disc it out.

I hunt an old British fort from the Revolutionary War! It’s been pounded to death by other detectorists and say nothing is left there! Well I found a few cannonballs and a dozen musketballs and shoe buckles and buttons! More still there but too overgrown right now! Never hunted out!!!

Not allowed to metal detect in our parks in California. Probably would upset the homeless. I have done a few beaches in Southern California. My 2 luckiest places were my mom's yard and a local picnic area in the mountains. I found a silver locket and silver religious figure that goes on a chain and a Merc in the picnic area. I wish that there were more areas to search around here. Good luck.

We aren’t? 😅 I read public parks are fine. I always tell people I’m not really finding anything “a penny and some bottle caps” lol then I tell them “I don’t find anything except a couple Pennie’s but it’s nice bc I also get to get out, pick up trash, and be around people… and then i show them the nails I find, and that it’s nice to be able to pick up that stuff up so kids don’t step on it” but it’s true because I haven’t really found anything yet of substantial worth lol
      They seem to be grateful!

I can't afford some of the better metal detectors as of right now. I have the habit by listening to the tone instead of numbers. I have been fortunate to find some mercury dimes and most best find up the hill at my grandpa's house that I am fixing up. My Grandma's 14 karat gold wedding band that she lost over 20 years ago. Though she has passed, I am beyond myself finding her ring.

You already have the best detector. No need to spend lots of money on a metal detector if you are having great results with the one you use tight now. Your Grandmas ring is much more valuable than the stuff we all find. Keep swinging Chris and happy hunting!!

@@theberkshiresmatreasurehun5337 It sounds like your silver era coins are pretty deep. Make sure you don't use three tone, it will let you down on deep targets although if you get up to like 90 gain it's not horrible. You really need to get that high though. When I'm in a deep silver zone I run deep mode or 4 tone only and slow down. Do one small section of the silver zone each hunt with the intentions of cleaning out the deep stuff. Not all of the silver will be deep, especially around trees or clay layers but if you pay attention to the dates on the coins you dig up as well as their depth you'll start to see a pattern. SIlver coins can ring up anywhere from about 75(half dime) to 98(half dollar or dollar). Maybe even lower in some circumstances if they're on edge or being masked by conditions. Remember it's really "metal eliminating" rather than "metal detecting" so dig more. I never discriminate either I want to hear iron, that's a good zone to hunt around. You want all the information. :) Iron targets can also help you date an area.
