Viv's back to using Marhsalls, the JMP Preamp I believe---great player, loved all of his work in Dio, Riverdogs and Def Leppard [heard some Shadow King with Lou Gramm, not bad]
I had huge racks, Bradshaw switching system, effects, preamps, poweramps, heads, etc. I sold all of that huge seup & now play through different Langner modded 70s Marshall tube heads, a HeadBone for amp switching, 4 Langner & Marshall 4x12 cabs, a few custom guitars Wayne Charvel built & a few T.C. Electronics effects w/ a GCX Ground Control Pro & Audio Switcher. It's simpler (& more portable!), but the sound is huge & the tone is unbelievable. This video is old tech, but sounds really good.
Hey rockers, please have class and understanding at this difficult juncture in his life. The first round of lymphoma chemo did not work. He has relapsed. He barely had any hair re-growth. He's broken. He has lived in Southern Cali for many years and just like Lars has lost his Euro accent so has Vivian, so sue him. It will be the least of his worries. I don't want to go through another loss of a brilliant rock guitarist, the father of 2 young girls, most of all this RN does not want cancer to win--again!! So all of you petty Vivian Campbell critics, now is the time to turn into supporters. There's still time to change the road you're on.
Imo...Vivian was...is the best ever metal player . I hear the classical feel of Randy meets the edginess of Eddie ...who then has a dark drink with Tony...rolled into the magical melody making of Celtic genetics. Thank you Vivian for your timeless gift!!
geo linkin - agreed! Vivian also has the mental toughness to be a cancer fighter and anxiety to want to play onstage even while the pump is hidden on his back, pumping the stem cell fluid in him. What a winner indeed! He is not strong, no that's not the correct word for him, he is righteously RESILIENT to do it and HAVE IT ALL ! May GOD bless him all his days and in return we learn from him and then ours will be too. Thanks for sharing my sentiments exactly. Rock the block geo!
geo linkin At age 18, in my dorm college days, in Texas, I knew and saw how Vivian could deliver at such a young age, very complex solos during his DIO tenure. He was not into other people touching him, not Ronnie, not video vamps - nobody. He wanted no part of any distraction of his concentration of his guitar playing. Because he's a TRUE professional. I can only surmise that to be unprofessional conduct and that he finds that uninviting. I'm only 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Italian and my Irish dad also is NO public display of affection kind of a man. I find Vivian and Daddy are both top notch in class. Happy New Year Geo!
Roozo411 Riverdogs contains not just what is possibly Viv's finest guitar playing, but some of the finest playing by anyone really, he is absolutely on fire on all of the solos! I miss him using the Floyd, he really had developed such a unique and beautiful, fluid style incorporating the Floyd, which few players ever do. Keep rockin' the Les Pauls of course Vivian, but break out these Andersons and Charvels, maybe even a Nightswan once in a while!
Wow now 2018 those racks from the 80s are now considered vintage gear and sought after. Today, its all about pedalboards and paying premium price for pedals that sound vintage. Back in the 80s the same pedal what are sought after now were selling dirt cheap because every guitar player wanted to have a rack effect with modern digital sounds now it went full circle.
I've met VC and he was a very nice dude. Happy to take a minute to talk with you. I think what is coming across as being condescending or mega ego is just a shyness about him. Almost like he's a bit uncomfortable when speaking publicly. That was my impression of him.
Oh, how things can change. :-) He's now gone back to using a couple of Les Pauls and a more simple rig. Check out the RUclips titled: "Rig Rundown - Thin Lizzy's Vivian Campbell & Scott Gorham"
I love the Floyd Rose as much as it sucks to restring. It really doesn’t take that much time I’m just lazy plus I go from standard to E flat to D a lot so that’s fun.
My above point was, that you don't need a large setup like Vivian's in this video anymore, to get all of these options, but a lot of it (tube/analog, but remaining quite and not stealing tone) is important, as are the right (passive) pickups, wood and pickup selector combos. Simple is better, unless you have big stadiums to play dozens of sounds at the switch of a hat in front of, but you can do it more simply now-a-days. Still, good stuff in the video. :-)
Kind of what I'd said (replacing a rack with some modeler, sure. However, I'd argue that one would still get better sound from a good tube amp over a tube amp modeler. That is all subjective, though, and a good player will make a modeler sound like something a lot of people would want. Definitely a lot better these days than a decade ago, or two.
Gotta love how all Northern Ireland stars end up talking like a drunk Brad Pitt. Kinda interesting how this is all about sound and the microphones for Vivian speaking sound like they are running through a potato.
I'm a Gibson Les Paul guy with an Orange + a few boxes. Love simplicity. But I can't understand why so many people here finds this technical equilibrium so fuckin disgusting?! It's educating to get to know a bit about this mastery. An extreme rig. And the man's funny! Enjoy a great complex player while you can (life goes pretty fast...) Perhaps more of a fusion wizard than a stone cold hard rocker. And that little clean 'Hendrix' thing in the end is just beautiful. Peace brother.
In the early 80s, guys discovered pathways into fire-breathing, EVH gain territory. But by the grace of technological limitations, their rigs remained analog, tube-based; organic. But, by the time of this video in the 90s, it had become: "Here's a preamp stage, followed by reverb, chorus, eq and delay, then another preamp stage, then more reverb, chorus, eq and delay.." The 90s player would consider the fx "subtle." Well, by the 2nd or 3rd chorus insert, it's not so subtle. This approach (right down to the requisite coil-split pickups) is a microcosm of everything that hastened the demise of 80s metal. With Viv here in the 90s, these damaging trends are in full swing. It would take until after 2005 before mainstream practice of a more pure signal path gained traction again.
The irony that what VC's "Sound" was in 1992 holding his Andersons (IIRC he got a bunch for Leppard in '92) well above his Les Paul, Soldano, Large Rack & Stereo Effects & Eventide H-3000) compared to only *5* years later is well-evident... almost *all* Les Pauls for his stage electrics guitars, no wireless, 13-52 Heavy Strings, Marshall & Boogie heads into Marshall cabs. Talk about downsizing, but as a Bassist who completely did a 180° in his gear & tone over several years, I can dig it.
