    Man, I can't get over that curly maple! And the soundwave was just enough to add a cool custom touch, but didn't take away from the natural beauty of the wood. Rad!

      Thanks Shaun! Believe it or not, the maple was an Ebay special... X-carve & Easel really make some ideas easier to realize, don't they? I'm stoked to see what you are going to do with yours once you get sick of carving your logo ;)

    That's a great addition to the otherwise-simple design of the dresser! Also, I like the flow of the video. I personally struggle with balancing pacing and tips and instruction in my voice-overs, so it's helpful to see it done well. 👍👍

      Thanks! Pacing is definitely a struggle and I'm constantly doing the dance between saying too much and boring people, and saying too little and confusing people. It is an art for sure, and I'm definitely still learning with every video :)

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Side handles would be really cool. The only problem with that is that the doors don't open easily when force is applied to the side....they rotate a bit and the friction of door against the slide prevents it from opening smoothly

    • @modustrial

      Thanks! That is a good idea. I actually thought about doing something similar and pouring black-tinted epoxy in the soundwave. Both approaches would have made for a better video cover image for sure! However, since this is in my bedroom, I wanted it to be a bit more subtle :)

    Looks great, however the communal CNC machine you described won't be available everywhere (isn't here). That said, a router and a jig would do the trick.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, you definitely could do this with a router. Maker spaces with CNCs are becoming more common. Some require a monthly fee or donation, but they are definitely worth it IMO. Not only do you get access to great tools, you also get to meet other makers! :)

    Four words: down cut spiral bit.
    Using one on this build would've resulted in super clean edges. Not the fuzzy edges created by the upcut spiral bit that then required further processing.
    Other than that, great modification to otherwise bland furnishings.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад

      +John coloe Thanks for the tip! Have you had success using those without dust collection? I considered the down cut, but was worried without the dust collector it would get bogged up. (Next video I will certainly at least suggest to down cut and dust collector for everyone who isn't filming a RUclips video. The only reason I didn't use the dust collector was because it blocks all the good shots of the CNC bit cutting the wood 😎 )

      I will for sure! I already went along and made an account with easel and trying to produce a decent looking sound wave of myself saying I love you for her to adjust and clean up. I won't be able to make it myself but I can definitely send it to a 3rd party to cut it for me! haha

      That's awesome! She will love it. What program are you using to generate the SVG?

    • @BrainBomb
      @BrainBomb 6 лет назад

      I'm going to try to convert it on google docs. See how that comes out, Google docs has a save feature if its a "drawing" but I can just copy and paste it onto that and see if it'll turn it into a SVG file that I can just clean up and adjust it accordingly.

      If that doesn't work, then I would suggest downloading Affinity Designer (free 10-day trial) -- that is what I use. Then do a search on using splines to trace an image in designer, and you should find what you need. Then you just export the project as an SVG from affinity.

    The nearest accessible machine is a couple of hundred miles away, so this idea is off the table for me.

      Doh, that is too bad. Where are you located? There are other maker spaces (the map is definitely not complete since it relies on maker spaces to add themselves to the directory)

      CNC makes it easier, but you could do it with a plunge router, straight edge and either a template or a lot of measuring.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад

      If you cut drawer in half first you could also do it with regular (non-plunge router and a simple jig. You would just need a piece of wood with a second thin piece that fits in the groove extending from it. You would have to cut a few slots (to the radius of your router base) then set the jig in the first groove cut, and move down the line repeating.

      I'm in a very rural part of Arkansas, so I'm pretty certain there aren't any maker spaces nearby.

      Anything that I'd likely carved would likely be outside my skillset. I've never been great at artwork, but I can build cabinets and other things to take up space in the house.

      Good eye, clips are sometimes rearranged for ease of explanation. Some of the drawer fronts went back thru the planer after the glue up.

    Do you know what sound the Soundwave makes?

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад +1

      Nope, that would be really cool to have a favorite song or something like that tho....

      A friend had a tattoo done of his son saying I love you. So many options

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад +1

      That would be really cool. Part of it was that I wanted to keep the computer part as simple as possible, since I know some people are still a bit scared off by CNC. But, that would have really been cool. I could even see someone starting a business making signs and such with custom generated soundwave carvings

      I shared this video saying it would be cool to make some wall art with your kids name on it when they're born.

      Yes, definitely! I actually used part of it in the LED "Create" sign you see in the background in the shop in this video. It's a really cool pattern... There are a bunch of other really cool ones on that website, all free I believe. (I linked it in the video description)

    Another machine i cant afford this would have been better seeing you do this with a router rather than an x carve

      It was great seeing him be resourceful. Almost every big city has a local maker space, or someone local to rent out CNC time. Most universities will take on work as well for laser and cnc work. Don't complain about the dude spending a ton of money to give us free entertainment.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад +1

      I don't own an x-carve either.... You can use easel software for free, and then carve at a local maker space. It is way easier than I expected to do without having a machine myself.

      +Rowland Custom Woodworking - Thanks Phillip! Exactly my point, I don't X-Carve either. The cost issue is an excuse to avoid new technology. Anyone can find a CNC they can use and Easel is free.

    You don't buy that people can't afford a cnc machine? Not everyone has access to a maker space either. Just because setting up the file is simple doesn't make access as simple.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial  6 лет назад +1

      My point is that most people don't even consider a maker space.... I see people saying they can't do CNC if they don't own one, and for many of those people that is not the case.
