Honestly love Wes , but! The golden rule (imo) about the supernatural nature of mushrooms, is that you really do have to experience it to understand it. I took mushrooms for therapeutic reasons, and I've always looked at any type of ancient homeopathic medicine as just that. So I'm a little different, but i honestly feel that if you love God in your heart than mushrooms is a gateway to that unseen realm that our consciousness actually resides in. It's not demon voodoo or anything like that. It's probably the most effective medicine on the planet spiritually speaking and you'll only understand that if you try it. God bless

Interesting that psychedelic mushrooms were the craze of the 1960s …at the height of when Allegro started to write about this stuff…hmmmm, coincidence?
well, what do you say about the rig vedas and their drink soma? main stream schoolars are not even debating that it isn't a drug. I guess someone is new to the subject?
Born from a virgin who got impregnated by an angel. Sounds very much like a real human being. Also we are supposed to eat his flesh and drink his blood? come on man. It's symbolic! .This isn't even Christian, this occur a lot in Greek mythology which allegro was onto. Christianity took of where Hellenism died. Also more ore less every founding fathers of the Christianity or pope, was either Greek-speaking or had a relative who was from Greek. The scriptures where never intended to be literal. If you dug any deeper into ancient Greek, you would know that the Greeks used drugs. Their spiritual center was called Eleusis, which sort of was like their Vatican. Many famous people from ancient Greece has been there, like Plato, Archimedes and Marcus Aurelius, they went there to experience an once in life time experience, which they got from drinking a beverage that gave profound visions. We know today that it was some sort of mixed wine and beer drink, spiked with ergot fungi. Wine is the Dionysus god of Greek. Beer is grain god, Demeter. The holy communion is not far from being beer and wine, since beer is more or less bread. Christianity was also an illegal cult until I think 300 Ad or something, Constantine made it to the head religion of Rome. You even have your American hero Martin Luther king scratching this topic with his essay ""The Influence of the Mystery Religions on Christianity". You have something like the Gnostic who apparently drank the eucharist in the wrong way according to the popes. I just think it is safe to say that something was going on in the early days of Christianity.
Any true intellectual wouldn't dismiss Allegro's work so quickly. You mentioned nothing of the paintings depicting people catching mushrooms falling from the heavens in baskets, you also failed to mention the stained glass art of mushrooms found in old churches. To completely dismiss the chance that psychedelics did play a part in the start of religion seems a bit hasty, especially when the fungi appear on every major continent, except Antarctica. There are over 50 known species, it's found in animal dung and tribal people used to follow cows/buffalo (really any large grazing mammal) for food. Seems very likely that these have been consumed for a long time. Especially when you consider we KNOW tribes used ayahuasca which is a mixture of two plants. It's crazy to think that it was discovered by accident, but it was, and if they discovered that I'm sure they discovered magic mushrooms, which are a one step process.
@@razoredge6130 I can send you the entire nearly 20 years of research into the topic, I was just mentioning one thing. There was also a chalice found with ergot alkaloids on the walls of it.

Exactly, I would like Wes to address this. This video doesn’t really dispel any of the major links to mushrooms outside of interpretations of some entomology.
Joe Rogan is trying to explain the logical reason behind the religion, nobody actually knows, what exactly happened in those times...whatever Allegro says might be half true...they would have been tripped and see God and they would have thought shrooms were Jesus...the story looks more convincing...
What’s ironic is this book is infamous for being literally terrible by quite literally >99% (truly all) historian experts. I mean just go read it and you’ll understand. Historians have already rebuked and rejected this book… idk how it gets talked about still.
2:20 LOL. The irony of this statement, coming from someone defending crazy (mushroom-fertility cult-inspired) theories from a book written 2000 years ago.
Wouldn't proponents says the fallacy is being represented the wrong direction? I believe they would argue that the understood meaning of the words was as mushroom and fertility rituals at creation of the stories, as demonstrated by summarian texts (assuming that's true, like Huff did; i honestly have no idea, just talking logic); then, the language morphed to extend the terms and change the stories; but christians fallacious apply a modern meaning of the words retroactively to say that original meaning never contextually existed at all- Christianity wasn't started by shrooms. I think proponents would say Huff strawmanned a position which doesn't recognize the meaning changed, when the real argument is about original meaning, it obviously changed.
Psychedelics have brought me to Christianity and startet my Spiritual Awakening so its pretty understandable that other people have similiar expieriences. I wanted to buy the book myself but thanks god i dont need to.
as a German Biologist and Pythagorean - The difficulty in Study of any “Science” is - that we are conditioned with local language - as we grow up - and scientific language - that MUST be “syn Thetic” - to exclude pre Judices and Associations. The Priest is a sort of “Magician” - “Shaman” - with super natural “Powers”. before any In Scriptions, Images - there were oral traditions - where language is even more complicated - as expressions may have changed over Generations. In my view - this is an impossible task to ever to untangle. Even worse - we create a synthetic Techno Sphere - where all connections to Nature are destroyed. Honestly think psychedelics were of importance in founding the religion, like come on Moses talking to a burnung bush for the 10 commandments sounds exactly like a trip. I also suspect Christianity was evolved from pagan religions, look how Eostre evolved from pagan celebrations to Easter by Saxons embracing Christianity but importing old religions into it.
Thank you for addressing this. I found this after listening to a JRE podcast. As skeptical as Joe tries to be before believing something, I don't understand why he believes this one crazy one-off theory that no other scholars stand behind.
it is because schoolars are most often law abiding geeks who would not murder another human being because it is illegal and not because it is wrong. Jokes a side. Schoolars are nerds and the very opposite of many who has taken drugs, most people tried drugs are regular human beings, but some are deffinitely great fuck ups. You can't say that about schooolars, they have evrything in order. So they do not like the idea that the origins of religion started from something as simple as from a psychoactive plant. Everyone who tried a powerfull psychdelic once kinda gets it thou' and those who haven't will fill their senteced with big words, holy saints, and precise dates.
If I remember Joe’s video on the book, it’s not actually about Jesus. It’s about Santa, 🎅 the mushrooms are red with white dots 🍄 and the area has reindeer. It’s an interesting story Joe explains about the book.
Lol, I take your point. Unlike Allegro's book the Bible has the benefit of historical corroboration and verisimilitude. My criticism wasn't merely the accusation but the fact that no one in any department of antiquity studies, archaeology, or linguistics at any accredited institution on the planet will be teaching from The Sacred Mushroom as a reliable source (other than a potential example of faulty methodology). On the flip side, I don't know of any scholar from said aforementioned departments who don't utilize the 66 independent books we call the Bible in extensive capacities. After all, they represent the widest collection of historically attested sources within all of antiquity.
Then why doesn't the Bible mention shrooms even once if it was central to early Christianity? Why is pharmakeia (sorcery, often involving drugs) condemned over and over and over? Why did Jesus say, "I have not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill." if he meant for people to disobey Moses and engage in paganism? What is going on?
Dear Wes i want to ask you simple questions 1. Do you believe the bible god is accurate (old testament and new testament) 2. Do you believe the bible is original and is not a derivative of ancient books
@@ResidentStump have you ever read the Bible? How consistent it is across centuries of different writers? Not to mention how skillfully written.. not to mention fulfilled prophecies In my opinion magic mushrooms is a rather poor explaination.
@@peters6345 Yes I have. A couple of stories stand out when people reference indirect communication with God or angels (outside a context of prayer). But no, the Bible is not consistently written throughout centuries. At all. Through many translations and revisions I think certain language may be made more consistent but I was only familiar with 2-3 versions growing up. If you don't think anyone ever took any drugs either purposefully or accidently I would say perhaps you're closing youself off to some possibilities. The stuff discussed in the video I dunno but *shrug*
@@ResidentStump can you explain what you find inconsistent? You know the Bible speaks out against misuse of alcohol? and drug use would be considered sorcery which is forbidden. Some of these prophets where put in dungeons or killed for speaking consistently of their visions and messages, to their own peril. These people believed God enough to put their necks out, you reckon they'd use means forbidden by God to get these visions? People in the Bible often asked for confirmation from God before acting/believing a vision. Furthermore things like destruction of Jerusalem came true in the old testament, similarly Jesus's prophecy about the fall of Jerusalem. Many more, like Daniel's prophecies I would argue if you aren't considering the Bible is from God, and closing yourself off. It's hard to convince people but God us real

I'm assuming you're one to mushroomise now and then. Common Jewish fishermen and citizens as well as the greatest Name to grace the earth weren't into your erratic lifestyle mate.
I caught one of joe Rohan’s shows which brought me onto this, it would sort of make more sense though as someone who does not believe in god being some ethereal being rather a explanation of what happened to someone under the influence. How many times have people published their experiences in modern times of those drugs as visiting another plain of existence, but now we understand it as the chemical effects on the brain. It is a very interesting topic to discuss
Have you tried a Psychedelic substance and seeing what your experience was? I’ve never tried it but if you were going to talk against this you may want to. That way you have the perspective to back your statements.
Which scholar in Allegro’s time debunked his claim? I’ve read Allegro’s daughter’s book (John Marco Allegro: The Maverick of the Dead Sea Scrolls) and Jan Irvin’s book (The Holy Mushroom), and I’ve also spent hours looking into the works of the other scholars on the international team Allegro was assigned to for the purpose of deciphering the DSS, but I have yet to find where a scholar in his time who was a philologist in that field of study who could objectively explain in detail how he was completely inaccurate, especially from an individual that wasn’t a Christian themself. I’m open to reading sources if anyone wouldn’t mind sharing some.
Nearly all of his colleagues on the original DSS editorial team in the 1950s - pick one. John Allegro estranged himself from all his colleagues in that camp. His publication of the Copper Scroll was severely criticized by his team leader, Roland de Vaux of École Biblique et Archaéologique Français, Jerusalem. The rest of his research compatriots bemoaned the fact that Allegro would constantly go on public record making outlandish interpretations of the Scrolls, which were promptly disavowed by his Qumran colleagues as the evidence never seemed to march his conclusions. de Vaux and others were very public about the nonsensical linguistics used in Sacred Mushroom. His later publication of some of the Pesharîm from Cave 4 (1968) was likewise scathingly reviewed by John Strugnell of Duke University due to it capitalizing on sensationalism rather than the data. By the time Allegro got around to publishing The Sacred Mushroom there was little left of his academic career, he’d distanced himself from every academic researcher and institution by then and his theories had drifted further and further away from anything resembling formal academic research.

Now, all one has to do is ASK... and still they do not ever, well, they ask for CASH MONEY! yea and Jesus ignores them for a few more lifetimes of greed. Jesus was never a Christian and when he taught, it was Gnosis.. Gnosis is how to commune with God, so yea, I know because i do it and its simple, its insane how many will run in fear when i say that, but believe a book 2000 years old of a bunch of men who said they could hear God... Well.... Gnosis is how ya do it. lol. Jesus will teach anyone who asks properly.

God bless

In order for this theory to work he would have to dismiss the extra biblical accounts of Jesus' existence
That's not an arguement
yeah good point. there is one in the greek one. and in Greek mythology it is not that uncommon that a person is also a plant.
"Nonsense is nonsense, even when spoken by famous scientists." - John Lennox

LOL.
I wanted to buy the book myself but thanks god i dont need to.

it is because schoolars are most often law abiding geeks who would not murder another human being because it is illegal and not because it is wrong. Jokes a side. Schoolars are nerds and the very opposite of many who has taken drugs, most people tried drugs are regular human beings, but some are deffinitely great fuck ups. "A CRAZY STORY WRITTEN IN A BOOK 50 YEARS AGO"
....... you realize what you said in defense of the Bible, right?
See also: the total lack of any mention of mushrooms of any sort in the New Testament.
Dear Wes i want to ask you simple questions
1. Do you believe the bible god is accurate (old testament and new testament)
2. Do you believe the bible is original and is not a derivative of ancient books

Many more, like Daniel's prophecies
I would argue if you aren't considering the Bible is from God, and closing yourself off. It's hard to convince people but God us real
I don't know if we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Rejecting his more outrageous claims doesn't necessitate rejecting the place of psychedelics in the development of Christianity.
I'm assuming you're one to mushroomise now and then. Common Jewish fishermen and citizens as well as the greatest Name to grace the earth weren't into your erratic lifestyle mate.
The experts said the world is flat. I'll take his advice as truth.
