I use to go to the Snappy Lunch every Saturday morning with my Dad, Luke Collins when I was just a kid. Earned my first car by working at the Snappy Lunch. I still think of the times I spent there with family and friends. My uncle Jerry worked there for a very long time and I always felt like it was a part of my family's history. Best place to bring your family and friends to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
I visited Mt Airy about 10 years ago. What a beautiful town! The locals recommended eating at Snappy's. The original owner, who was quite old by then, was still working the kitchen. The pork chop is tender, and that breading in which they're fried just make it out of this world! I live in Orlando and still think about those pork chop sandwiches all these years later!
I went for Mayberry Days about 13 years ago. I didn't find the people very friendly. They seemed annoyed by the whole thing, honestly. Not sure if it's still popular or if they even have it anymore. I wouldn't go back for the festival / parade again. The Snappy Lunch was closed so I didn't get to try it.
Mayberry is not real, it only existed on the Hollywood back lot. However Andy Griffith would occasionally mention things from his hometown as part of Mayberry on the show. He did ask Barney 1 time if he wanted to go to the Snappy Lunch. Over the most of the episodes it was a generic sounding place called the Diner.
Charlie always cooked pork chops right in the front window. Thinking back, the raw chops were brought out to him immersed in batter from somewhere in back in big bowls. When cooked they went back there, so there must have been a kitchen to assemble sandwiches. They're tender with a crunch to the coating. The slaw and tomato really make it!
You are right. I heard it right from the man himself when he came back home when part of the highway was named after him. He said he would grab a hot dog and a bottle of pop from Snappy's and then catch a movie at the Earle. You have to remember those things didn't cost as much at they do now. Economy was different back then. Even so he was a poor kid and couldn't really afford much.
@@looksmaximus611 Mayberry was made up by the writers and producers of the show. There is an interview of Andy Griffith on RUclips. It’s called Andy talks about Mt Airy. He describes how he got sick of the residents making the claims.
In his 2002 homecoming speech he said that he never ate a porkchop sandwich in his life, but he would get a hot dog and pop for 10cents after the movie. He liked the name of the resturant and added it to his TV show.
Marty Andrews I'm from Mt. Airy and think I may cast a little light....... Snappy Lunch is an old, old restaurant that has a short list of owners and employees since early last century. Several workers have been there nearly their entire working lives. They're just regular folks who proudly work to keep up the restaurant's good food and good name (and sometimes peek out from behind refrigerators!!). The only movie and TV stars here are those who visit September's Mayberry Days and October's Autumn Leaves Festival !! Open breakfast and lunch only.
Been there and loved the pork chop sandwich. The prices on the menu are very reasonable to. Looked like the staff were very busy working to fulfill the patrons needs while giving this interview. I'll be back again some day I hopes.
I just stopped in for a grilled cheese sandwich and ice tea, it really was like stepping back in time most places in the south hire only illegal immigrants to work in the kitchen
I recently went to Mount airy, and visited snappy lunch, and was disappointed with the so called pork chop sandwich, and after watching this video, I understand why, pork tenderloin is not a pork chop. Pork tenderloin is tasteless, and dry, cheap. After I had their famous pork chop sandwich, and had left the restaurant, I started talking to some local people, and they told me that after the man that use to own and managed the place passed away, they started reducing the quality. Now it's just a tourist trap. Shame.
I tried it, didn't like it. What's up with that tasteless thick batter on the unseasoned chop? None of the flavors complement each other, it's hard to eat with a hodge podge of totally different flavors.
Andy said in an interview that his show was NOT based on Mount Airy and seemed quite upset people started the rumor. People started that story and ran with it all these years.
@@ebogar42 True. So I don't understand why he said it wasn't based on it in an interview he gave as his home in Manteo and was nasty about it to boot. Mount Pilot = Pilot Mountain, etc. Yes, too many references to name here.

I worked with a carnival for 17 years. We would set up in the parking lot of the Mt. Airy Mall in the spring. I remember my first pork chop sandwich. It was a long day. We had just finished the ride inspections and preparing to open. My coworker, Joe Jones, who was from Mt. Airy left to grab something to eat. Upon his return he handed me two of these sandwiches. I am not a big eater but these were so good I had not problem finishing both.

The cole slaw is not mayo based, its slightly tart and sweet, it's great.
