    Saying "stop being afraid" to a person with anxiety is like saying "just be happy" to a person with depression or saying "just go to mcdonalds" to an anorexic person. (which a doctor told me once lol)
    It may be a "nice" advice from an uneducated person but for the person with this illness it's kinda toxic because it's just not that easy. It's like saying "just stand up" to a person in a wheelchair. Kind of disrespectful and disregarding the issue, playing it off as if it was a "fault" of the person or as if it's not a big deal when it actually is for the person.
    Glad you brought attention to this🖤.

  • @saggguy7

    Fellow psych major here: another issue with the poll is that it’s being put out on social media for people to choose to answer or not answer as they’re scrolling past it. A person who has social anxiety might feel more inclined to actually answer it because they feel as if the poll is referencing them or that it’s relevant to them. A person who doesn’t have anxiety won’t necessarily see something in that poll that feels personal to them and they will be less likely to answer. I think there’s a term for this but I don’t know what it is off the top of my head.
    Even within the world of professional research, when measures are taken to prevent sampling bias, self-reporting is generally accepted to be the least reliable way to obtain data.
    I hope no one who saw this believes you can assume anything from it.

    the way he spoke about it being normal made me push off getting help for my anxiety and depression for years. those kind of thought made me think that I was fine and that it was normal and eventually it would just go away. Thankfully I eventually decided to get help and realized that I was actually struggling with an illness and that it was only getting worse by me ignoring it for so long.

    • @Xan1120
      @Xan1120 5 лет назад +1

      Shavonne Marie I feel it. My anxiety often got pushed to the back burner and called “being shy” rather than actually genuinely being scared to interact with people. I think the biggest reason for this has to do with many traumas as a young child and it just being pushed off as me being “too sensitive”. Looking back it pisses me off that I didn’t get help until last year, and now that my services with the state have ended, I’ve been struggling to keep myself together, especially since my mom is severely ill.

  • @saraheerie
    @saraheerie 5 лет назад +37

    In my experience, as someone who was actually diagnosed with social anxiety disorder as a young teen, most people who haven't experienced what it means to have this disorder can't comprehend a person being visible anxious when put into social environments. That and they still think that anxiety presents itself visually every time. They think they can tell if someone *really* has anxiety (whether social, general, etc.) by how they visibly react when in a particular situation. But those of us who suffer from these disorders know that sometimes it doesn't manifest itself in a way that would make it apparent to those around us that we are in fact dealing with anxiety.
    I have adhd as well and for the longest time my friends didn't even know. Why? Because when they hear "adhd" they think a wild child running around and screaming. Not an over worked adult with time management problems LOL. Most of what I deal with no one even sees... unless you come to my house LMAO!

    He's not thinking about those who have physical issues with anxiety. I already stress about most things. But when I'm super anxious my chest hurts so bad that I can hardly breath. It will last for days. Its definitely comes in waves depending on my life circumstances at that point.

    • @iDidntEatURmarshmelo

      For me, my legs and arms shake...then I will keep getting the sensation to throw up...and/or empty bowels even if unneeded. I lose my appetite as if I'm sick, but then not eating also makes me sick. My face will often turn red and sweat. My throat clinches up. I may start crying.
      No way I could stop myself from feeling this way. I can feel one way in my head or tell myself not to act a certain way, but my body will physically react every time.

    saying anxiety is 100% a fake illness actually made me cry. i have been suffering from it for 10 years.. & wish it was fake, i wish my depression was fake. i wish i could function as a normal person, when even getting stamps, going grocery shopping or buying my train ticket gives me a breakdown when i'm alone. i have to work from home otherwise i would probably lose it. i wish all of my fears and negative throughts weren't poisoning my body. JUST STOP IT? like thanks mate, my PTSD, depression and sever anxiety is cured all of a sudden. wow.

  • @MarcelWilsonLynch
    @MarcelWilsonLynch 5 лет назад +7

    Well the simple answer as to why more people claim to have social anxiety in 2019 is that there's less of a stigma against mental illness as a whole which means more people are more comfortable going to a therapist and getting diagnosed. 😒 that's like when people talk about how more people have adhd or autism than they did 100 years ago. Yeah because we have more knowledge as to how the brain works and we study that more. As we learn new things it gets easier to see the signs of certain medical disorders such as anxiety or depression or autism etc. It's not new it's just better understood.

    My anxiety is at an all time high right now. I can't let my younger siblings go down the stairs without me watching because I'm afraid they'll fall-- they are 11 and 15 and very annoyed with me-- I can't be out in public for too long without feeling like my chest is being crushed, I can't have physical contact without having flashbacks or disassociating or having a panic attack. And all of these symptoms trigger seizures when they get too severe. Anxiety has literally made it so that I am unable to work and provide for myself, it has literally crippled me.
    I have severe anxiety, on the autism spectrum, suffer from depression and PTSD, suicidal tendencies, and also have a sleep disorder. Ummm y'all... wheres my clout though? Like damn I spend all my time at home crying and wishing I was dead and I could have been trending this whole time?

Your video clears his tweets up perfectly, love the statistics analysis you give :) at the end of the day, it's an ignorant man who shouldn't be spouting about what is nothing to do with him because he is causing harm. He clearly doesn't understand anxiety or even being nice it seems, you don't need to care what people think to experience anxiety. It's easily stemmed from other things such as a death or something in upbringing. Generalised anxiety disorder or OCD in particular have nothing to do with other people in their origin... 80%bofmy clients have anxiety, not just nerves. My dad actually had social anxiety growing up just like I did/do. I was diagnosed when I was 13 years old. I remember in my sociology class in 12th grade the teacher told the class to talk about which illnesses they thought were “fake.” Of course despite my anxiety I spoke up and told everyone how I’ve been suffering for years. I even pointed out the fact that I was blushing to show it has physical symptoms as well. Everyone got quiet LOL. I’m so tired of social anxiety being minimized. It’s hell. I’ve learned to cope with it, but it’s never gone away.

    You know to some extent I used to think like him. Not with the "you're weak. Stop it" remarks but in the sense that it's become trendy and that too many people self diagnose themselves. It takes away so much from the real people who suffer from it. I myself never experienced any mental illness until the summer of 2017, I went through the worst time of my life and was diagnosed with depression and I can't put into words what that felt like. You know for a long time I'd just watch your videos about mental illness and would be thankful that wasn't me and I had this mentality that you're just born with it or not so I couldn't possibly ever experience anything. And I had and still have so much anger over it because to me it makes me feel so weak and it is shameful to admit but to talk down to people and tell them to 'get over things' makes me so angry. Right now, my coworker and I are dating and he has severe anxiety and I first hand see how it affects him and even though I don't know much about what true anxiety feels like I'm never going to leave his side or stop trying to understand him. I've done a lot of growing up since going through my own experiences and meeting him and seeing Keemstar say super ignorant shit like that is just so disgusting and unnecessary honestly . Thank you for making this video and all the others you ever have. You have helped me so much in my life so thank you Sarah I love you!💜

    I’m loving this new content and i agree with everything you said. It’s 2019 and people are still this uneducated/insensitive about mental health? How sad

    Also, thank you thank you thank you. This is absolutely ridiculous and offensive that he acted that way. I’m so grateful you shared your articulate thoughts and ideas 🌱 his comments made me undeniably angry and he completely disregards the validity of people with mental illness. How the world has changed! Humans haven’t had much time to evolve with technology therefore may be another contributor to the rise of diagnoses, but also you’re correct that the negative stigma is slowly being reduced. Keep fighting the good fight 💪 ugh I’ve loved your mental health vids for so long! You inspire me!

    I appreciate you so much for making this video and I truly hope that everyone can see this especially the people who saw his tweets. I can’t believe he even thinks it’s okay to say those things but I guess I’m not surprised because it’s him. Thank you for coming on here and sharing your true thoughts and opinions and opening up about this topic because it is literally so freaking important! I agree with you 100%. And I can see that anxiety disorder is on the rise so much and for him to just flat out say those things KNOWING his viewers can obviously see it and some even look up to him.. ugh it’s just so disgusting to me. Thanks for sharing! You’re awesome.

    I stand by everything you’ve mentioned in this video. It’s bad enough that he’s saying those stuff but also making these sarcastic offensive jokes for the sock-factor of it..
    I missed your mental health videos! And that scientology video sounds hella interesting.
    I’m looking forward to the more laid back videos!!

    I just wanted to say I appreciate you and this video so much. I suffer from agoraphobia and for years I’ve been so down on myself about it, and why I can’t overcome it. But I will. One day lol. Thank you for being an advocate for social anxiety and anxiety and mental illness in general.

    Thank you for making this video Sarah, everything you were saying I was saying before you even said it, that's how mad I was about this "RUclips star" and his crappy tweets that have no personal research behind them. I have OCD disorder and anxiety which is linked of course, I also can get depressed out of nowhere, which I feel is really common so maybe his just been surrounded by people that are always happy, which isn't realistic or maybe he's just so all about his self that he doesn't care to stop and think about what his words could do to someone. I truly believe that people that have mental health issues are strong and very sensitive human beings, we tend to feel many things all at the same time and very deeply, which in turn courses mental problems. I'm not bothered about percentages, I'm bothered about if that man has even asked anyone in his life if they cope with anxiety. I myself have my own views on medication and how people like to put someone with a mental problem in a box, but as mental health problems are so personal and no one could possibly fully understand it, unless they're in that person's mind, I chose not to share my opinions that I feel could hurt people, but obviously this man doesn't think about that. I wouldn't wish anyone to have any mental health problems, as much as I can control it, they are times where I cannot and it hits me out of nowhere. I hope no one read his tweets and believed it, because they are empty and are coming from someone who is just trying to get his ratings up more. Thank you again for speaking out!

    So true keem Star! If I just had a sip of beer while I was crying and hyperventilating so much that it made me black out then maybe i would’ve blacked out sooner and that will surely stop it!! Love this video Sarah, thank you for calling out this garbage. Also so proud that you’re just making videos you want to, I truly believe if you are interested and excited about the content/literally anything you make or do it ends up a lot better.

    Omg this really has me heated. For someone who has anxiety to the point that I have panic attacks, you can’t just “stop it.” A lot of the times I get panic attacks on days I’m completely calm. I’ve even gotten so bad that I got sick in public, so no you can’t just stop it. I am not weak. And I love what you said about being strong for being able to get through the bad days! That really made me smile! ✨

    There's nothing wrong with you making this video. You're helping people for sure. I come from a family, and community damn near, that just make it seem like they do not believe in mental illnesses, especially in younger people. It's unfortunate. You're just helping break stigmas surrounding mental health. I know it can be kind of scary, because he has such a massive following, but there may be someone who follows him, and feels crappy because he said such ignorant things, and may come across a video like yours and will be reassured that he's just a closed minded individual. Love your channel btw :3

    Anxiety and social anxiety are different, however, these are coming together most of the time. My ex claimed that anxiety doesn’t exist and is invented by drugs companies.
    I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, social anxiety and agoraphobia when I was 16 (10 years ago) but I remember having panic attacks as young as 6 year old. Without my medication I’m not even able to get out of the house. I was on disability for 5 months this winter. Now I have a new job, I feel better than I ever did and it feels so good.
    Do what’s best for you, get a little bit more out of your comfort zone everyday and take meds if you need them.

    The question: "do you have social anxiety?" could be read in two different ways, I believe. It could be read as "are you diagnosed with social anxiety disorder?" or as "do you experience feelings of social anxiety?". Like, I would say that I have experienced extreme feelings of being socially anxious my life, some of which have lead to panic attacks, but I've never been diagnosed with social anxiety and would not diagnose myself as such, so it's a poorly worded question which I would struggle to answer. Let me know if you're better informed than me and disagree:)

    I am amazed at how I get through some days, at the time I just want to disappear but I just push through it knowing it will eventually end. The major problem I have with anxiety diagnosis, not that its overdiagnosed but that many people actually have other disorders but get misdiagnosed with anxiety, a symptom of the disorder. I was seeing psychologists for years before finally getting diagnosed with autism and ADHD by a psychiatrist, best thing I ever did. This happens a lot for females on the spectrum. I don’t use my diagnosis as an excuse, it just helps me understand my emotions, what to do about them and how to cope with daily life.

    This has got to be fake and to stir up some acknowledgement for himself. I appreciate you speaking about this. You speaking directly to the point of not being weak if you have a mental illness was a really strong moment and I think that reaction is the most important that can come from this.

    i rarely comment on videos but i just wanted to say thank you for making this! also i don't know if you knew this but may is actually mental health awareness month! it's always frustrating to see some of the stigma that still goes around online but i'm glad that people are taking a stand and speaking out against this. i honestly wouldn't have even known that he put out those tweets (i don't follow any of his social media and no one else has made a video on this) if i hadn't watched your video. thanks again for continuing the fight against the stigma!! also i am quite interested in seeing scientology's views on mental health care and such. excited for the new content to come :)

    ok, so, when I was 10 years old and had a panic attack litteraly from nowhere, since I was already in my bed just about to sleep and suddenly couldn't breath or stop shaking all I had to do was to drink beer. That was and is the answer, all the kids have to carry a bottle of beer if the panic attacks are severe and will learn that alcohol is the key to manage their problems and will not lead to a drinking problem. What a wonderful genius :3

    I still remember my dad calling me pathetic for not being able to go up and order food by myself as a child. It took me so long to be able to force myself into those interactions. Still can't make phone calls, still can't manage to find a job. Anxiety and social anxiety are real. And I am not pathetic or weak for it, I refuse to tell myself that anymore.

    I don’t know why but I don’t think someone who is not understanding and open minded could ever understand what it is to have severe social anxiety without actually going through it. I also agree with some thing he says about people romanticizing social anxiety but he just really is rude and just an ass to those people who are going trough this🙄😒
