I really can't understand how anyone can spend 12+ years in a classroom and still know nothing. It must be almost impossible to not learn something- even passively- over all that time. It would probably take more effort to block it out.

@@uutthyu4636 True, young kids are curious about everything. It's the one size fits all attitude I think that is a big problem. There are many ways to learn things, we're all different. School teaches you that the one particular way they've chosen to teach a particular thing is the RIGHT and ONLY way. No wonder people lose interest and switch off.
Richard Feynman was great on this subject. A favourite example of his was when his cousin was struggling with algebra. Richard looked at the problem and gave his cousin the answer straight away. his cousin said "Yeah but you're not allowed to do it with math, you have to do it with algebra!" Says it all. He understood it, but the method he was shown confused him.
I'm convinced that the stereotypical problem with learning what offside means in soccer is not because it's a difficult concept in itself, it's because it's a stupid bloody name to give it which confuses people from the get go. These things can be avoided if you think about it first.

I saw this starting to happen over 25 years ago. I grew up with only 3 TV channels and listening to BBC talk radio. So absorbed basic general knowledge without even trying. I worked in a large office with a lot of people in their 20s and 30s when I was in my 40s. The general level of ignorance in a lot of them was astonishing to me. There is so much dumbed down entertainment available today, it is just too easy to avoid seeing anything that is "educational".

I suggest you check out 'The Time Machine (1960) Meet The Eloi / Books Crumble To Dust'. You're sure to get what I'm on about. As an owner of a massive personal library which I've enjoyed for over sixty years, this scene always gets to me. I texted an old friend, recalling this scene, saying that the Eloi are arriving. As I say, some of it is down to them not even trying to exercise curiosity and learn about the world they live in but they have been handed a comfortable life (I know they don't think so but they are wrong on that) where, up to their twenties, they have had to work for nothing and have had every obstacle smoothed down. All with the aim of keeping them dumb and unaware as their future is stolen from them.

Regarding the moon question, I'm guessing they're getting that answer wrong for one of three reasons:
    1) They never bothered to look at the sky and count how many moons there are.
    2) They don't know which world is Earth. Thinking "is Earth the one with the big red spot, the red planet or the one with all the rings?"
    3) They don't know what a moon is and think it's the stars in the night sky.
You decide which of those 3 scenarios makes them dumber.

My 11 year old grandson (who is from the UK) can answer these questions. The problem with the USA is their school system. If they only have to tick a box on multiple choice questions then they are likely to get some right by default. In the UK you have to learn a subject and answer questions on it or do an essay so that you understand what it is you are writing about. As somne comedian once said when Americans do stupid they excel at it.

@McJibbin , I read a study recently which should alarm Americans , If i remember right it was written in 2021 and it was a study on Americans with IQ's under 80 of the adult population . The population in The US now is 333 million of which 260.8 million are adults . Of these adults 2.2% of them have mental learning difficulties and 6.7% of adults all have below 80 IQ score . This calculates to 23.2 million American voters who can't name the last 5 presidents but can name all the Kardashians . Another thing i found weird was only 22% of the American population are children around 74 million kids . Here in the UK the population of children is 62% of 67.7 million population 25 million adults & 42 million kids .
