@aSkymne I'm not sure how to explain why you should want to communicate with someone that you care about. I don't understand the question. Because it's respectful? Because talking to people that you like is fun? So you can learn more about each other? Because it could create a dialogue that would lead to being more productive. Because communicating why you like and dislike certain things can help that person know what to send you and what not to send you. That question really shouldn't need to be asked
I mean let's assume that's the case- he said "a lot of people send me memes all day" which means he hasn't told anyone to reign it in? Even when his wife brought it up and he had the opportunity? "I don't respond because I'm swamped with work and don't have the time to be on my phone like that." She also mentioned in her call that he's sending her memes too, so I don't think your theory holds up.
While in theory you're totally right that mature adults should be able to communicate their needs in a relationship I'd say that's too high of a bar to set for the average couple still in early development. Instead I think his excuse gives off more the vibe that he's trying to get her off his back about it without having to tell her he doesn't think her memes are funny; and that he thinks by saying he just didn't see it it's not his fault for not reacting.
