The thing that caught up with them most (and probably many other companies) was just the overall demand for roller skates fizzled after the pandemic “lockdowns” started to lift and people had less time for this new hobby. Some people like me continued to skate but a lot of people did not and the “need” to have overpriced relatively entry level skates was not there. Also now everyone has skates whether they are using them or not so who are you going to sell to? Literally everyone that was thinking about skating bought a pair, or two, or three, of skates from 2020 to 2023. The market was supersaturated and demand went 📉

Thanks for making this video. I like Riedell skates, but the Moxi brand has had some quality control issues. They should come down on the prices too, given that they’ve been around for awhile and the demand for their skates has significantly decreased. As an older street/trail skater, I asked them to gear more marketing towards recreational skaters who don’t do parks or the skate camps. No change. Funny that I have a few pairs of Bont skates that I consistently reach for and enjoy more. Looking forward to the Impala video. 😉
Great video man. My wife dreamed about a pair of Moxi but she never attempted to learn to skate, thus buy. But for her I did a research back in 2015 about new roller skates, Moxi, Impala, Reidell etc. Thus I was watching Indie and Dirty Debra videos. Would be interesting to see your Impala video.
I think you could've gone into more detail re the Lazo party debacle! Moxi still had a stronghold on the heeled skate park/street fam. tbh until recently it's been hard to find heeled skates to compete with the jackboots when it comes to aggressive styles. However those skaters are entreched in skatepark culture and felt massively led on by the year of teasing from Lazo. The end result being a corporate tactic to sell high end fashion boots goes against the rebel/punk atitude of the skatepark scene and left skaters feeling like that they'd been preyed upon in a capitalist bid to monetise the skaters within this scene. A lot of folks were excited by the prospect of a Thrasher like brand... There was definitely a market for "skatepark inspired" merch. But they misread the target audience by releasing a boot whom nobody in that scene would wear or afford. Skaters who bought jackboots are serious about their skating. They're expensive enough that it's more than just a "lifestyle" piece. So they were expecting a product to complement that. Hell if they'd released sliders to pop on when you take your skates off at the park, or a practical skate bag which holds your skates and pads and helmet, it would've gone down a storm. But heeled ankle boots? Nobody wants to put a pair of them on after shredding for hours.
My thoughts exactly on Lazo. It really just exploited the culture and talent of park/street roller skaters. It seems like Lazo is on its way out though, Estro and some other well known skaters are no longer involved. Likely we won't know what happened for awhile, based on the vague things they've said they all probably signed an NDA.

This is a fair assessment. I also think roller skating has moved from people watching lifestyle skate vids to watching more technical street edits and Moxi always felt geared towards lifestyle skating.
Pretty sure that’s where they messed up LARGELY. They left their core market / customer base and focused on street. People aren’t going to see tech skating and say “wow I can do that, let me buy skates” Lifestyle skating is still huge and Moxi will never be able to grow pass whatever Estro is obsessed with at the time. As a rollerblader, I know this is silly, but I was always a bit upset at the quad skates for taking attention away from rollerblading. Suddenly, people were saying they liked my rollerskates (which were actually blades). I know they meant it as a genuine compliment, but it always stuck in my ear. I didn't feel like quad skating had gone through the same stigma, struggle, and pain as rollerblading, and I always had a bit of silent hatred for them because of it. To me, seeing a person trying quad skates only made me think how they could have been a rollerblader instead. It was only until later that I realized the average person doesn't see that much of a difference, and that there is a lot more that unites us than separates, including a decent amount of crossover I didnt previously acknowledge. It's a shame that rollerbladers like Montre, who decided to strap into quad skates and show support, were slapped down instead. His participation could only elevate the sport, and quad skaters have become some of my biggest allies in the skatepark.
Quad skates are just not as good to roll in . Its why we all switched to inline boots back in the 80s . Putting quads back on is a huge step backward imho . Sure they are fun for the Nostalgia but thats about all . Im in to rollerblading for the long run . :)
@Dailyroach I personally haven't strapped into quads since middle school, so around 25 years. But the higher interest in quads has also increased curiosity about rollerblading by proxy. Many shops carry both kinds of skates, so the opportunity to try both methods is there, and I see a lot of creators at least taking the opportunity to share both. Do I like them? No, not personally. But I think we gain so much more in the public eye by building each other up.
If it makes you feel any better, I still have more people say "nice rollerblades" when I roll by on quads. At least in Miami 😂 Even though we may cringe about the mixup, we got love for our bladers too 🫶🏽 But it'd be nice if the average person knew the difference lol
I had a comment but I deleted it. I am an outside party and shouldn't be so passionate. LOL. Anyhow, that whole thing was so confusing, but the receipts came in left and right. People got HURT hurt from the way that business was run. Sad part is the skates speak for themselves. I have 7 pair of Moxi skates 1 pair of Impalas and a pair of VNLA. The Jack boots are the best skate for me by far. Ive tried others and they dont work for me like the Jack boot. I get making clothing and shoes for skaters like Vans or whatever but the price is astronomical. I'd rather spend my money on the skate gear. Lazo Party was like their way of silencing the real problems and moving on. Sweeping it under the rug, or so they thought. The skate video leading up to Lazo release was the most exciting skate video I personally had ever seen. And then the reveal of a walking boot; ugly (IMO) overpriced during a bad economic time. Bet that didn't turn out how they expected.
A lot of people will probably say this video is a year late, but I've been rink skating in inlines for about a year now and decided to change to quads because it's honestly kind of hard to dance in inlines and that's what I most enjoy. I was looking at Moxis and considering them when this video showed up. Thank you for making this video. I don't want to support a racist company that partners with homophobes. I guess I'll be going with Sure Grips now lol.
@Dunbeezytv the first couple of days I felt like I was going to fall over front to back on quads, but I liked how they were stable side to side. Within a week, I realized the potential and how much easier it was to get on my toes and heels. Within about 6 months I was better on quads. I just use the inlines to go long distance outside now. And they feel like I am going to fall over side to side for the first few minutes.
well 2020 every outdoor activity had a resurgence. i wonder why... now every one of them is adapting (or trying to).. blading, mtb, motorcycle, rollerskating and skating.
I'm not a park skater. I'm a 66 year old woman who started skating the summer of 2022. I just skate but I remember Indy Jamma Jones videos when I first started skating. Her reviews helped me choose skates. Then I found out about her drama. I'm not in Cali or young enough to park skate so I just skate. Loved your analysis. p.s., I've thought Moxies were over rated for a long time.
Not only the demand but the actual lack of support from the brand to get people skating. The prices were cool. During the pandemic because people had government money, but after life started again, people couldn't afford $90 for a four pack of wheels, $400 skates and $150 bearings. Impala came in and fixed that. Then having Quad cup at Blading Cup only to have people pay $50 to compete and win a candle and some wheels. Pretty messed up.
I thought you were talking about the artist/musician, moxi/moxifloxi... They just had their youtube suspended temporarily, so it kinda made sense in my head. LOL well... this was interesting as well!
Also skate companies like chaya focus on innovation and comfort. Moxi is an overpriced Riedell skate with blocks added. Also some of the controversy didn't help sales.
This sounds quite like Gravel races seeing pro from Road Racing showing their talent. Deal with it, learn from them and get better is the only way forward. Want to give younger skaters an award? Sure do that but with an extra category.
The real trouble started when Indy stiffed Karen and got called on it. Indy made a pathetic apology video that doomed PRSK8. Didn't stop me from buying my Jack2's. They are awesome!
I agree. I grew up south Houston, the California dream was never something I ever wanted to touch. I could never relate to these pretty, wealthy, prestine girls. I wish there was a better brand for us low brow girls and guys and gays
Nice vid. I think Fantom mag was also a misstep due to that drinking game in the first issue. Lazo was hilarious. Rollerskating is used to sell sooo many things but shoes aren't one of them for pretty obvious reasons 😂 I also got a weird vibe off Estro when I first discovered Moxi. Talking about how Moxi was "pushing boundaries of what's possible on roller skates". With Riedell in another colour way? The retrofits for park are all made by indie companies. Heck there's a plate you can clip a block straight into these days! I don't see Moxi releasing that stuff. I recall allegations of racism at Impala too: failing to pay, or paying less to, skaters of colour. Indie addressed it like a steamroller
Something worth mentioning is that skaters "graduate" from Moxis. After somebody skates for a while & meets experienced skaters, they learn that their Moxis are mediocre quality, plastic heel & sole on a plastic plate, holding back progress. Then if/when they find out about skate culture, go to some nat'l skate parties and notice we don't f* w/Moxis or Impalas. They thought they were doing something, sexy walking in the rink all Moxi geared up, look around and nobody's impressed. Embarrassing....
@@cheska97 If you're upgrading skates and you want to stay in moxi I would recommend the jack or jack 2 boot. If you want to explore outside of moxi though I recommend Edea or Riedell. They have a lot of options ranging from intermediate to high end competitive boots. They are also more cheaper than Moxi's in the long run.
Exactly. A Riddell boot with blocks added on. Chaya skates are way more comfortable. Plus I can do royales and torques without grinding on the leather boot (or whatever fabric they use).
It's really sad how much of this information is taken out of context or simply not true... A lot of these people are just very passionate about roller skating and doing their best. Estro is not and has never been racist, Moxi is not Fantom or Lazo, and Impala is still ripping off artists... They've ripped me off twice haha!
There is a lot of drama in the skate community. For something that’s supposed be sacred and an outlet from politics and the world. It’s like going to the bar. Leave politics and religion at the door and enjoy the time
Hate to break it to you boy, but Moxi is suffering just as all skates brands past Pandemic. During the pandemic a lot of people shopped like crazy, sales went up, businesses expanded if they were fooled this will always be like that. Moxi still have No1 as appeal to women, their product is 99% targeting women. Guess what most women don't like doing? Sweating and sports.... after most got their pair of skates and put them on the shelfs that was it. Us guys in sport love to make more women do sports but it's extremely hard. Women do not wear down their Moxies because they don't skate them. They don't need a new pair either. Es there are now cheaper skates and since no one will ride them for more then 3 sessions it does not matter what people will buy. Moxi did amazing in the Roller Skate world. Your idea that they are dead because they deleted a comment on the internet is very far away from reality. The demand for their skates did not increase, it decreased and they tried to grow bigger. That was their mistake. I am sure they will not die, but their "fall" as you say is just a result of the hard reality. Skating in a bow, a skate park or street skating, that made them cool is just not something most women would like to do. I do it, I meat a bunch of guys that do it and I only met 2 girls ever that do it. Sorry but a brand future has nothing to do with human rights, but with sales. While it's true that some people may dislike them politicly, a skate is a skate. It has many colors and it's an object. It does not have political opinion, because it's not a living thing. People still buy Nike for all they did right? I will buy whatever skate I want because I am a skater. :) But boy, yes I both Powerslide skates because they offered me more for less money then Moxie and they also made shoes for MEN and moxie only got the Girls covered. Moxie, where is your Men shoe ladies? Boy, don't bother. All skate brands are taking a hit after the pandemic decline in sales. All us skaters know about it and why it is happening. :) It's fine. Life goes on.
@@Dunbeezytv keep it up. I was on the Moxi team and skated my pair until the toes popped out - as a skate team member I had to BEG for skates and was often forgotten about completely. Moxi is suffering because “they” cannot keep the lid on the public business dealings you’ve beautifully highlighted in this video. But ALL of the BTS financial and social and racial abuse will eventually come to light. Good work.
This whole comment is weird. Saying “us guys in sport love to make more women do sport” kinda comes off with the same energy as “us parents love to make more kids eat veggies” yknow? It’s wild to say women don’t like to sweat when activities like figure skating, ballet, and cheerleading are women dominated activities. How come women-popular activities are always seen as “less than” or “not real sports” even though they’re just as competitive and require immense discipline, strength, and training as male-led sports? I highly doubt there would’ve been as much of a boom in skating if women were ignored as a massive demographic. Many sports are male dominated which can make women feel alienated, and even most skate brands work in men’s sizing. Highlighting skating as a welcome and popular activity for women created a huge cultural opportunity for women to get active in a scene they felt welcome. The best thing you can do to normalize women in more sports is to act like we’re normal and belong just like everyone else.
There is a lot of drama in the skate community. For something that’s supposed be sacred and an outlet from politics and the world. It’s like going to the bar. Leave politics and religion at the door and enjoy the time

Even though we may cringe about the mixup, we got love for our bladers too 🫶🏽 But it'd be nice if the average person knew the difference lol
I started on inlines and switched to quads. It translated pretty well.
How long did it take you to feel comfortable? I started in-line skating to my skate spot and it was dodgy for a while😅
@Dunbeezytv the first couple of days I felt like I was going to fall over front to back on quads, but I liked how they were stable side to side.
Sounds like that could be something to research
LOL
well... this was interesting as well!
Thanks for the perspective. Imma check that out
@@Dunbeezytv lol... idk if you would like it... >_>
@@mikayla_collieI watch “The Fall of videos” for fun😅
I hurt my ankle, all I've been able to do it watch videos about skates. 😢.
Get well soon 🫡
what are those songs in the background?
One of them sounds like DJ T-RELL All Mines, rink jam
@@Mochi227Im trying to find the name of the first song. Still, thank you though.
It's DJ Techtrix I'm not sure of the specific song name
Also skate companies like chaya focus on innovation and comfort. Moxi is an overpriced Riedell skate with blocks added. Also some of the controversy didn't help sales.
This sounds quite like Gravel races seeing pro from Road Racing showing their talent. Deal with it, learn from them and get better is the only way forward. Want to give younger skaters an award? Sure do that but with an extra category.
Whats crazy about impala skates is that it’s owned by globe. Who used to make skateboard shoes or still does?? LOl
That’s might be why they’re so good at selling extreme sports🥲
The real trouble started when Indy stiffed Karen and got called on it. Indy made a pathetic apology video that doomed PRSK8. Didn't stop me from buying my Jack2's. They are awesome!
She took that apology video down too. Talk about falling on your sword.
Great segment (although one of my comments was deleted)
Like a comment from the PRS page or I deleted it. It might have been a mistake on my part. I haven’t intentionally deleted comments
I had NO idea that this much trash was behind the brand..
ME NEITHER
The cut goes crazy
Thanks for the encouragement
Good report Dunn
Thanks for the kind words

I agree. I grew up south Houston, the California dream was never something I ever wanted to touch. I could never relate to these pretty, wealthy, prestine girls. I wish there was a better brand for us low brow girls and guys and gays

I think i also ruined it lmao. I bought some women real inline skates that they could actually grind with.
Montre destroyed all of them was there in attendance
The 2018 Moxie promos felt super weird to me too. Indy most definitely crashed out before crashing out was an internet term😅
Embarrassing....
so what skates do you recommend?
I believe you. That’s why I never called anyone the Rword during the research. How did Impala rip you off? I’m talking about them next.

Thanks for sharing🫡
@@ABOMINATRIX Thanks for the assists
