I’m recently getting into crochet, but I paint and draw and a rule of thumb for pricing I was given was to base your price off of an hourly wage. For example, if I set my hourly wages to $15/hr and I can crochet one mini bee in an hour, the price of the bee would be a minimum of $15, then you can add in cost of materials. I used to set a timer for 2 hours for pet portraits and charged $50, with my hourly rate being $20 and $10 for the paint, brushes and mediums and it was a, easy way to figure out prices since I couldn’t for the life of me figure it out.
I have never been successful at selling my crochet. The number of hours involved are too many for me. I am TRYING to go the youtube route and make how to videos. Good that you are recognizing what works for you! ❤
I did the same thing with my iPad! I had the 11 pro and I liked it, but I felt it was too big. Sold it to my mom and bought the Mini. LOVE it. It’s so portable and usable.
Girl you are TRAVELING this year!! go girl! YES FOR THE TRAVEL VLOG! Also if you decide to do the pattern for the bees, I would totally buy it!! You plowed through this order! Thank you for passing on the pop it tip. Will you ever or do you have a video on how you take your pictures of your items?
Aww you’re too sweet!! Thank you soo much :) the mini bee pattern is live on my etsy hehe! And oooh thats a great idea for a future vid, I can deff do that :)
Stopping five minutes in to tell you I feel so bad for you! You're doing the same amount of work for less money 😔 I agree with you, handmade items aren't very wholesale friendly. I love your bee pattern, definitely buying this one❤
Can we just appreciate how Gemma replies to EVERY comment! I feel like even small RUclipsrs who get 1-2 comments, they still don’t reply, and the fact that she gets hundreds of comments and replies, let’s just appreciate that
I love these long vlogs, please make more if you can! I just have to say that these videos are so well made! I love watching crochet videos while I crochet lol, I’m making a star shaped bag right now!
PLEASE make a video on how you utilize your iPad for crocheting! I got one but I feel like I don’t use it enough/ don’t know how or what for. I really need to learn notability because everyone raves about it! This was such a great video! You inspired me to open a business of my own!
Omg I am planing on going to a market this summer! I only have like 20 items so far 😢. I am also crocheting plushies and all your plushies are SO CUTE❤!
I'm in ohio so I think I need to go on a scavenger hunt to find these in person :D Glad you were able to see that wholesale wasn't worth it - your time is super valuable and you can't say yes to everything!
omg i feel you, i have had people reach out to me for wholesale asking to take 30% of my profit which i just think is far too much, and I totally agree, crochet is not very wholesale friendly because it benefits small businesses that can easily mass produce things (such as stickers, alibaba goods, etc.) but handmade items (especially crochet) are very labour intensive and not great for wholesale. I do wholesale for 1 person (Strawberryboots) and I love the way she does wholesale, she lets me decide how much to sell my items to her for and the price she can sell them at, plus I get to advertise my items at her store as well which is really nice, but i haven't found/had anyone else give me a better offer than what she does. I mostly make larger items and custom items for her (not just small items).
Maybe you can put your socials or Etsy shop on labels and attach them to the plushies, and it can be like a marketing investment. You could get some new subs and potential repeat customers out of it. The shop owner shouldn't have a problem with labels if she's not trying to pass it off as if she made them, and in the end she's still profiting from your generous discount. ❤
@@crochetbygenna yes!! I second this! definitely do this! I make my own tags at home, i print my logo onto a thicker paper and whole punch it and tie it on each plushie like a tag (i do this at markets as well and I have definitely noticed a difference in follower gain and recognition on my insta) because not everyone takes a card or notices who/where they bought an item from.
Your joking,I don't know how you get the guts Franko,I sincerely am truly thankful for the content that you bring.Amazing creator and extremely brave or silly one of the two, .Nah I'm saying Franko the brave❤❤
I don’t crochet but I do wholesale. I would suggest you raise your pricing even for wholesale if you plan on doing wholesale because trust they are probably charging way more double or triple what you charged them. I make candles and my smallest candles are $5 a candle for 4 oz candles which is less time than your bees. Please charge more.

I am just learning to crochet but I have previously sold cards that I made for Christmas and homemade birthday cards. I definitely found I could not sell the cards at a show as I could not make them cheaply enough to make it worth it. Some of my cards were 5 hours plus so asking 8 dollars seemed reasonable but did not sell well. I feel your pain in this one. Good that you are learning what works for you and what doesn’t. Great video
Hi! I personally don’t do any whole sale however I know a little bit, maybe reduce the bigger ones by maybe 30% and the smaller ones by less or some not at all, that way you are still making decent gross profit and are still getting the orders.
24:38 it is funny to me when you’re crocheting and the little arms are dancing/slapping you like I feel like the life is coming into them as I’m going 😂😂

You are my go to crochet channel Genna!! 💕 I’d love to see your vlog of Italy! Side note: Friends! We could totally have a crochet and drinks night 😂 every time Genna says “freaking cute” we drink! 🤩
I have a question, so when you made the Dino’s I saw that you have not put safety eyes in and I was thinking maybe you were going to do embroidered eyes but then you showed that they were safety eyes and I wandered how you did it because when I put my safety eyes in I wait till like the second to last round but how did you put them in when you already sowed it off? I also love your RUclips and I subscribed ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
Always love your videos (especially the long ones). Enjoy your trip! I loved the Diablo (spicy pepperoni) pizza when I lived in northern Italy. Enjoy all the yummy food and don’t forget to not drink the water from the tap (bad chemicals)!
I dont know how i got recommended this channel but your plushies are sooo adorable. If ive never crocheted a day in my life, how hard would following a pattern be? Or is it impossible 🤔. I love the penguin pattern ❤❤❤
I just subscribed. I would totally buy that bee plushy for $8 even $10. Looking forward to next time you sell plushies!! I think I'm too intimidated to try and start, knowing nothing about making them lol. Maybe I'll learn something here ❤😊

Hi Genna. Big fan of your work. Everything you showed is on my favorites list. Had to tell you I like the little runt chubby dino. You called him stumpy. I guess because I can relate to him. 😅 Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Hi Genna! I am a young (14) crocheter myself, who aspires to be like you. You have been an inspiration. So much do that i have been messaging around and trying to get a market stall. This would be my first market. The rainbow theme you had at your market looked so pretty, so i decided to kind of do the same thing with the rainbows, but in a slight twist. Hope you don't mind 😂😂. I am really passionate about crochet and you are my definite favourite crochet youtuber. Sorry for the ramble! Quick question, for when i have my first market, how many items should i bring? I haven't been sure how many to bring. I also had an idea for a turtle: maybe an icecream turtle? The shell the icecream then you have a cone on top looking like it has fell on the turtle sorta? Thanks for reading and once again so sorry for the long message. Thank you so much Genna. I will continue to be amazed and inspired in what you do.
Aww hello!! thanks so much for the sweet message ❤️ I'm excited for you to have your first market -- the rainbow with a twist idea sounds so cool! I'd say maybe having a stock of at least 20 items would be good. I'm so glad you love crochet as much as I do! You'll defiantly succeed being so passionate!! The ice cream turtle sounds adorableee, I gotta try to make it in the future!! ❤️
@@crochetbygenna Thank you so much ❤️ I appreciate the kindness and help :D I don't think I explained the turtle that well but hopefully you get what I'm saying 🤣🤣
I crochet a lot and the people around me are trying to get me to sell them. I'm a beginner and I personally don't think I'm great at it but they do and keep asking me to make them things. Do you have any suggestions for a good starting out price for things? I'd also like to say this is my first time seeing your channel. I've had a rough day today and watching this has made me feel so much more peaceful. Thank you so much for doing what you do.
Aww I'm so glad you enjoyed watching :') thank you so much! Im definitely really bad at pricing myself still but try to determine how much you're spending in yarn for a plushie and the amount of time it took you -- then you can see how much you want to pay yourself per hour. I also like to look on Etsy and see what other people are selling their plushies at and use that as a reference ❤️
Hey Genna! Loved your bee and will buy the pattern. What's the difference btw this mini bee pattern vs the other pattern you have that comes in 2 sizes, there's a mini size there too?
Hello :) thank you!! So the mini bee pattern is just for the tiny, mini bee. The other “2 sizes” bee pattern will give you a “regular” sized bee and a jumbo bee ❤️
Not sure if anyone mentioned or not but your chubby dinos may be different sizes due to other factors not just tension. For instance, the dye process changes the texture or strength even in the same brands of yarn. Which maybe what is happening.
Wholesale for crafting is different than for resale stores!!! I've done Wholesale, but the highest crafters should go is 30%. Resaler's buy from manufacturers that have 100's of employees and machines that produce the product. That's why they can offer 50% it costs them less to make. We don't have machines or assembly lines that produce our products. You also have to set a quantity that they must purchase to get the discount. I offered 6 pieces of the same item for 20% off and they must spend at least $100.00. If they buy them by the dozen I offered 30% off, but they had to spend at least $250.00. Just remember we are hand making our products without machines and assembly lines. Our products are HAND MADE. Don't giveaway your profits. Love all the products you made they are so adorable.
Love your videos Genna!!❤ i was thinking of making a jumbo sunflower turtle, but i wanted to ask you first, for the original pattern do i multiply it by 2 or did you do something different to get the turtle jumbo? anyways, i hope you have a great trip!
@@crochetbygenna Thank you sooo much for responding Genna!! i honestly did not think you would respond, but you did!!! thanks sooooo much ❤️❤️ have a great day!!

Love the video, very helpful :) Thanks for being so honest about everything, it's really useful when you're looking at starting a new business and have no business skills!!! QQ - What pattern do you use for the leggy froggies?

I hope they’re at least shouting you out in some way to help you get more publicity 👁️
Thank you so much!! I hope they do too lololol
its less than minimum wage after deducting costs
10 to 15 dollars gor the beed. you need to charge more.
You're not a machine. You don't give that big a price break. Wholesale is more work more pressure. There are no machines to duplicate crochet.

What yarn do u use for the turtles? And the other chunky plushies❤❤ and also what size hook do u use
The green colored yarn you used for your leggy froggy is so vibrant! Which yarn did you use?
Aww thank you! Premier parfait chunky ❤️
@@crochetbygenna thanks so much! I will do that, I appreciate it.
i love your videos
Awww thanks so much!! Ahh 3 weeks in Italy sounds like a dream❤️
I just in lov with your vids
have you ever done a color block turtle? like every part is a different color. I think it could be really cute in pastels
I havent!! That sounds super cute 🥰
Love your videos Genna!!❤ i was thinking of making a jumbo sunflower turtle, but i wanted to ask you first, for the original pattern do i multiply it by 2 or did you do something different to get the turtle jumbo? anyways, i hope you have a great trip!
Hi :) thanks so much!! I keep the pattern the same, I just use size 7 yarn and a 9mm hook! ❤️
@@crochetbygenna Thank you sooo much for responding Genna!! i honestly did not think you would respond, but you did!!! thanks sooooo much ❤️❤️ have a great day!!
Can I ask how you are putting the eyes on after you close them up? Just started doing markets so looking for any tips to make crocheting stuff for it faster!
Yes, would love to know that also Genna.
I hot glue them!! I normally put eyes in before crocheting the plushie close, but for minis, its sometimes hard so I just hot glue :)
Love the video, very helpful :) Thanks for being so honest about everything, it's really useful when you're looking at starting a new business and have no business skills!!! QQ - What pattern do you use for the leggy froggies?
You're so welcome!! And thanks for being so sweet! Leggy froggies are by “KnotJadedCo” on Etsy ❤️
