  • Wednesday was day three in the trial of the Strongsville teen charged with murder in a deadly crash that occurred last July. It was arguably the most emotional day in the court room thus far.
Mackenzie Shirilla, 18, faces multiple charges including murder, felonious assault and aggravated vehicular homicide. Shirilla, who was 17 at the time of the incident, is accused of intentionally crashing a vehicle with her 20-year-old boyfriend Dominic Russo and his 19-year-old friend Davion Flanagan in the car. Both passengers died.
The prosecution says she was going 100 miles per hour when she went off the road and crashed into a building near the intersection of Progress and Alameda Drives in northwest Strongsville at 6:15 a.m. on July 31, 2022. Many tears were shed in the courtroom Wednesday as prosecutors played surveillance video of the crash multiple times and showed autopsy photos of the two victims.
Shirilla appeared distraught as she wiped her eyes with a tissue, and Dominic Russo's mother even removed herself from the courtroom.

This is sad. At 19, I was in a similar crash and thank God I survived. A few friends in the car didn’t walk away the same. 1 was in a coma and woke up to a different life with a metal plate holding up his eye socket and mentally challenged. A few others with broken body parts. All because the driver thought it was funny to speed and swerve left and right. He thought nothing could happen because there were no other cars on the street. But he hit a tall sidewalk going 100mph, the car flew up and eventually crashed into a tree. Before we crashed, I tried stopping him. I begged him. I hit him. I tried steering from the back seat. He just kept laughing and going faster and serving more. The investigators said he tried to kill us because there was no evidence that he ever tried to use his brakes. I moved away and tried forgetting it all, even his name. I’m in my 30’s now and This case just brought it all back to memory. So this girl and anyone else driving reckless like this deserves life in prison for their negligence.

The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. July 31, 2022, at a 250,000-square-foot building in Strongsville’s Progress Drive Business Park. Shirilla turned slowly onto Alameda Drive from Pearl Road and then floored her 2018 Toyota Camry down the three-quarter-mile street until it reached 100 mph, according to surveillance video and data from the car’s computer system.
The steering wheel jerked to the right, then to the left, and the airbags deployed seconds before the car jumped the curb and slammed into the business.
A passerby spotted the crash nearly 45 minutes later and called police, who found Russo and Flanagan dead. Shirilla was trapped in the driver’s seat with one of her fuzzy Prada slippers stuck to the accelerator, and firefighters pried her out.

The video doesn’t lie! The expert that examined the car afterwards, said that she didn’t even attempt to hit the breaks. Everyone makes mistakes. And I know she’s 19 or 20. But if you watch other videos of her hearings in court, she seemed like she couldn’t care less. She would smirk, and just seemed so bored. Even at her first appearance. Of course during her trial, when she was in front of the Judge who was going to decide what charges she was guilty of, it was a different story. Her tears were for herself. The judge made the right decision.
I believe that her boyfriend was going to break up with her, or made her mad or jealous, and she made a horrible, and stupid decision that has caused more pain than can be put into words. I think she’s like a younger version of Jodi Arias.

As a parent, I just know that there’s nothing worse that could ever happen in life than losing a child. Thank God that i don’t know that pain. I doubt I’d survive it. I agree. It seems very one sided . This girl clearly shows remorse for the accident and it seems she may have acted in the heat of the moment but we also don’t know if one of the passengers were being aggressive towards her or if she was intending to get out of a bad situation. Where are the details? There are two sides to every story and this does not add up. Is it possible someone pushed her foot on the accelerator? Who knows. No one was in that car that survived except the girl and and I’ve also read that she doesn’t have a lot of memory of what happened before hand. I think she should do some time but this verdict is absolutely over the top. There are cold blooded pre meditated murderers that do less time. I know of kids that have been killed while other kids were driving and doing stupid stuff and the parents of the victims didn’t press charges. Because all the kids involved were guilty of doing stupid stuff and accidents happen. The consequences and lifetime of guilt is enough. She needs professional counseling for sure. It is sad these boys lost their lives but also what we’re they doing with a 17 yr old in the first place? Parents of the victims seem to be pointing the fingers when their kids may have been just as guilty. If I’m wrong. I want facts besides the car speeding with no sign of breaking. I have known tons of guys back in HS that use to do that crap all the time.

      Huh?
EMDs have NEVER been held to the standard of actual doctors under the AMA... And there has NEVER been a degree of confidentiality that they are held to... They are trauma experts and are exempt from HIPAA just like 911 is... They are there to do EVERYTHING they can to ensure a person survives at ALL cost within the law!

My children’s father drove on to the exit ramp of a freeway were not sure if he did it on purpose or not but he hit another car head on not only killing himself but also killed the young man who was driving home from work. They don’t always survive. Usually in a alcoholic state getting into an accident you’re not going to get as hurt as you would being sober because your body is relaxed in the alcoholic state. If someone knows they’re going to crash their car their first Instinct is to tighten their body which will cause a lot more damage. RIP to those young men.

She also took the route a day before, as if planning it...she didn't brake, a normal reaction when having an accident...and that she planned a route with no one around for hours. The accident was at 1am and they weren't found till 5am, lessening chances of survival. It unfortunately does look like murder when you take it all into account

I lost control of a vehicle at 15yrs old while driving my boyfriends new truck. We were headed up into a mountain and as I turned a sharp curve the road suddenly went from paved to gravel. The steering wheel was spinning left, then right, and there was no way to control it. There was a steep 80 ft cliff on my left and woods to my right, and I prayed that we wouldn't go over the cliff. The truck spun in a circle and crashed into the trees sending my boyfriends head through the windshield. He had to have surgery to his skull. My bladder was injured. It traumatized me for years, but it was an accident. What if he had died? This could have been me, with my entire life destroyed forever. And, putting your foot on the breaks when your vehicle is out of control doesn't do a thing to stop the car. If you have never been in that situation you wouldn't know that. That's why it is called, "losing control", because you have absolutely nothing you can do to stop it, until it crashes.

There is no way in a million years that anyone can prove beyond reasonable doubt that this was murder I.e. Premeditated It's manslaughter. One can also argue that it was attempted suicide. The human mind is a scary place at times and some people are victims of themselves. It's often (but not always) a chemical imbalance, they don't think straight To those who think a long jail sentence will deter others should think again. I.e It didn't prevent this girl from doing what she did and that's common with 95% of crime. Example: The death penalty and whole life sentences are rife in the USA yet there are many many thousands of murders there every year, it didn't deter those killers. I would give the girl 12 months in jail. Either way, 1 year, 5 years or a full life sentence doesn't bring the dead back. The father of one of the deceased boys doesn't want the girl to have a long sentence either.
