    Well my son took the top shroud off and the flywheel key was sheared. So he had a spare and installed it. The knocking noise ended up being a loose blade. The blade adapter key was sheared as well. I welded a new piece of key stock in the blade adapter, whacked the crank back to somewhere near right. He put it all back together and it runs as new. Your vids helped,, thanks.

    I've got one now that had a broken crankcase sump, so i found one at my instructors business and swapped it over. replaced the gasket and now it's giving me fits. My instructor said that it may have moved it out of time, but now you have me thinking about the cam gear....the other day I just wanted to see if it would crank and it did. I shut it down and was doing some other things and i'll be darned if it wasn't starting again....

    Great job Bruce...I'm glad you did this one as it was a perfect candidate for this fix. Just one observation if I may...the blue coloured compound on the bolt you were talking about is not an RTV, it's actually a thread adhesive called Loctite which is used to stop the bolt from working loose. There are a few types but usually the blue one is a semi-permanent adhesive and the red one is a permanent one and a PITA to remove. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thread-locking_fluid

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 лет назад +1

      I thought it may be loctite (really I did) but i am sure the RTV will seal as there was still a bit of blue left on the bolt. Thanks for the comment appreciated.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 лет назад

      I do know that but I used RTV on top of it. It worked. It may have worked with the old Loctite without any more.

    Hello Dave, This video hits the spot. I've recently dug out a Bob Cat push mower with a B&S motor circa 1986 by engine code. The deck looked wonderful as a sensation style cast aluminium, with a pulley drive. The motor is a 4 hp with a PTO. Looked interesting, what a mess. A bent crank, straightened it with a 6 inch 2x4 block and a 5 lb maul, next no spark, so a new magneto, when I got spark, vapor from the carb, checked the key-way, good. Now, to find the time to crack open the case, a good possibility may be a similar condition, thanks for the clue. Looking foreward to your next mechanical adventure.

    I just cracked open the case on the same engine to inspect the governor. Like you, I had to scrape off the old crankcase gasket ... took forever. So, when I installed the new gasket, I didn't use a gasket sealant as so many have recommended. I noticed that you didn't use a sealant either. Anyway, mine is not leaking and hopefully I won't experience a repeat of the scraping agony should I have to open the case again. Your thoughts on applying sealant?

    Very cool! I enjoyed learning stuff. Great info about that sump bolt, I am assuming it is the same length as the others though. Another great point about the flywheel key, the tech who attempted to repair it probably went right to the key, as he should have, then gave up when the engine didn't run. I will surely remember that little shroud tab you mentioned if I ever mess with one of these...I did notice that the crank was stepped down a bit below the lower seal, wondering if this is peculiar to the engines made for Sears...

    • @Cragified
      @Cragified 7 лет назад

      If the key is loose in the slot then it will end up fretting until it is destroyed and possibly damage the slot as well. If it is loose you either have the wrong key, an improperly machined key or the slot is already worn. Which if it is then it's basically down to do you have the capacity and patience to machine down an oversize key to fit or don't care down the road if the engine is already nearing its end of service life.

    Bruce I have a Briggs engine that I thought the flywheel key was bad, but when I took it apart, the key is fine so I am suspecting the cam gear now has moved. When you pull the cord it will not move, or maybe something broke inside. Not so sure yet.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 лет назад +1

      I would take the head and look in there. That is before you crack the crankcase. I had on that was so full of carbon it wouldn't turn over till I took the head off. (that is assuming it is a flathead)

    • @paulbrown8370
      @paulbrown8370 6 лет назад

      Yeah, It is a pulsa prime and I had hit a pipe with it and it stopped right away and now is very hard to try and pull the cord. I checked the flywheel key and that is fine, but I installed a new one anyway, but still doesn't want to move. If I pull the plug, it moves fine, no noise or anything inside the engine. That is why I think the cam gear twisted.

    • @BrucesShop

      @@BrucesShop Hi Bruce, I had not noticed a break in the video between putting the flywheel on and the cup but I just went back and watched that part of the video again. I think you put the key on the shaft then slipped the flywheel on. Most videos showing this show the key being tapped into place after the flywheel is slipped on and aligned with the shaft. Just not clear as the keyway is on the opposite side of the shaft in the video.

    • @enreiss
      @enreiss 4 года назад

  • @TheNovadude

    Thanks for sheading light on the shortcomings of plastic cam gears, I had a governor come apart and the pieces got jammed in the timing gears, consequently the cam slipped timing as you indicated in a previous video. Do you know if the crankshafts are interchangeable from mowers to HWT(High Wheel Trimmers), THe shaft is longer on a HWT vs a Mower, but all else looks the same, BTW, I had the crank gear get stripped also...

    I would have used the same sump cover from the the good engine back to the good engine. I would be afraid that the bent drive shaft had hurt the other cover.

    hey bruce,great video as always.Enjoy relaxing and watching your vids as they are well done and educational.I even fixed a few mowers i was stumped on after watching you do it.But i was wondering if u have a public email or way to ask you questions,as i need some help with this old Sears craftsman 12/38 riding mower/lawn tractor.Its model number is 502.255111,and engine is a briggs and stratton model 143.426092.And it had a tecumseh carburetor,and starter.Ive never seen a hybrid where the two companies worked together before.Ive been having issues with getting ahold of a cheap aftermarket carburetor to replace part number 632490,or 632774.So i wandering if you or anyone else may know of a cheap good substitute carburetor to replace it?I also have run into a few more issues that maybe you might be able to educate me on dear friend.Im all ears as they say,lol.But if u have an email then i can send u some info and questions.You might even be able to do a video on some?Cheers friend.😀

      I am sorry John I am not a small tractor expert really. My advice is to google the heck out of it.

    Don’t you have to line up the cam gear with marks for proper timing? Sure you did this but just didn’t show it.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  7 лет назад

      Well some locally, some online, Some I have used from older machines. I try to buy North American first (Mexico Included). The search for aftermarket after that. Mr. Google is pretty smart.

    Ours just pooped itself. My wife hit a rock last year, bent the blade into the ground, and the crank was pretty bent. I left the crank bent and just put a new blade on. Shook some of coarse but o well. The other day I pulled the cord and it knocked real bad, and stalled. I pulled the cord again and it RIPPED the cord from my hand. I mean with a vengeance. I suspect something in the timing went, either a flywheel key, or the cam, but man didn't it kick me. I bought it 8 years ago used for 125 bucks, I guess I got my moneys worth. May dissect it and have a look.

      I have bent the crank back with a hammer but now it sounds toast

    • @1958johndeere620
      @1958johndeere620 6 лет назад

      I had good luck when I was a kid at bending one back straight with a hammer. It was my dads new mower and I was like 10 years old. I was shitting clinkers at first, but whacked it back and no harm. The mower ran for years till the deck rotted out. He never knew. Ha. I already have a new "free" mower so I may not even fix it. With this ethanol fuel we have to burn there is no shortage of good mowers that are free, just need a carb clean.

      A few years back my neighbor brought their push mower to get serviced because it would not run. They told him it was not fixable and he should buy a new one. He put it out by the road for free. I took it when he was away from home, went to the very same repair shop and bought a 3 dollar carb kit. It ran for years. I never had the heart to tell him the story. He would have been miffed.
