12 years after you made this video and this is extremely helpful. I hear people talking about all you can use a balloon to determine the compression stroke or you gotta find markings on the flywheel and all of that garb. Your video is the most simple and easiest way to find him and thank you so much 12 years later!!
Seems like every other vid I've watched not mentioning decompression arm on cam. Very important when valve adjusting on these motors.ended up breaking a recoil.if you don't adjust properly
Thank you. Reading about TDC on compression stroke on the internet has confused me. You explained this very well. I understand it perfectly now. Appreciate it.
As many have said, this is BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO on finding TDC. The other videos are really a lot of filler and way too complicated you broke it down and laid it out perfectly. I'm in my mid 50's and your vid gave me the confidence to change the valve springs. Did a bunch of mods, bypassed the governor, turned out the throttle screw, adding a new carb with new pilot and main jets along with a new external air filter. Had to adjust the idle screw and holy Sh...... I clocked the bike at 33 MPG and I'm 200 lbs. Thank you very much, awesome!
Absolutely the BEST video I have seen on the subject !! Both in terms of engine and video quality. Good sound, camera, lighting, script. Helpful hints on confusing points. Wish I had seen this one first. THANKS !!
It is super important to keep the screwdriver from binding as the piston goes to TDC. I make the mistake initially of using an artist's paintbrush thinking the wood dowel-like handle would be a safe indicator, but soon found it almost impossibly pinched in place, even by going slow. You really have to help guide the tool you're using to avoid a problem.
I have to tell you, this is best, the very best, explanation I've seen in this subject. I'm new to this kind of stuff and up to now, this was totally confusing to me. Not any more, thanks so much. Subscribing to your channel.
another way you can do it is when your exhaust valve is open then you know that the intake valve is closed so you can adjust your Gap then and vice-versa for the exhaust valve
Great Job! This was very helpful. Another way to confirm that you have TDC is to rotate the crankshaft slightly back and forth - there should be no rocker arm/push rod movement.
Cool 😎 Thanks for your video!!! Just subscribed to your channel!!! I can’t say how much $$$ This video saved Me!!! I knew i needed to find the correct stroke just didn’t know how to...!!! My push rods were actually missing 😳😳😳 Have no clue as to where they are still 😂 Don’t see ANY way they could have fallen into the oil pan!!! I got this mower from a nephew for $200 and have been mowing three yards for two years and it seemed to run fine... No spitting and sputtering No backfiring No sign it was running on One cylinder 🤷♂️ yeah i know... People are gonna think I’m an idiot that doesn’t know the difference between a rider and a push mower 😂 I don’t care about that!!!🙄🙈🤷♂️ I just wanted to let you know I’m thankful and maybe this mower will last quite some time longer!!! Thanks again ✅ Gonna clean up the Engine cooling fins whilst they are easily accessible and since i just got done with the yards i Have to Cut... Going to cut a Neighbors yard 😂😂😂 Anxious to see how much more power it has 😳✅👍 Blessings 🙏
Just watched the video it's very helpful. I have a mountfield ride on mower 4 stroke and I'm changing the head gasket how would I know what position/stroke the piston has to be in before I bolt it back on? It would be a big help if you have any info that would help me
Thanks for sharing. Question: so if piston is full visible does that mean that valves are ready for adjustment. (can a light be use to see the piston position ) please correct me if wrong. Again thanks and God Bless.
Best explanation on the net. The valve clearance specs on my troy built tiller do not specify what stroke engine is on when piston is at TDC. Does it matter?
I have a Harbor Freight Predator 3500 Generator/inventor with only 17 hours of run time I have no readings on display gauge for: V - Voltage A - Amperage VA - Volt Amps/Watt I do have on the display gauge. Hour - current run time and accumulative run time I tried a test with a portable heater, and it powers that, so I’m guessing the generator is working OK? I’m worried about not have those missing readings. Also how do you reset the circuit breakers. I can’t find any information in the manual. I’m wondering if that could be the problem of the no readings? And thanks for “how to find TDC” that was a big help. Thanks
Hello, I am working with the Honda GX390 engine. I need to determine the valve timing, how can I do this or do you have this information? This is the information I mean; 1) Intake valve opening angle:? 2) Intake valve closing angle? 3) Exhaust valve opening angle? 4) Exhaust valve closing angle?
If you have a 2 cylinder engine can one cylinder get compression Right after the Exhaust stroke instead of the intake When the screwdriver pushed all the way out to its farthest point it's right after the The exhaust valve And that is when I have compression the 1st cylinder that I just did seem like right after the intake was done moving The compression stroke started The compression stroke started Just like you explained in the video
Thank you!!! That was totally professional, well-detailed and clear to understand. Much appreciated. Offhand, living at ~6,300 ft. altitude, what sort of PSI reading would one expect from a healthy (cold) Kohler 149cc OHV engine after a few pulls of the starter cord? In general, would compression pressure correlate with the local pATM? Finally, might you be able to suggest a main jet size for my altitude?
So if I understand this correctly as the intake valve is opening the piston is moving downward in the engine which is the intake stroke. After the piston reaches the bottom of travel on the intake stroke the intake valve closes as the piston will move upward on the compression stroke. As the piston reaches the top on the compression stroke both valves will be closed. Is that correct? Have you ever adjusted valves on a small engine where it was supposed to 1/4" past TDC of compression stroke for adjusting the valves? Thanks!
I could be wrong !! But I was told that you just need to adjust any valve lash with the valve closed an that TDC is not always have to be done, just turn crank by hand adjust lash then rotate to close adjust other valve, you want to adjust any valve in close position!!
Can anyone tell me why exhaust valve opens slightly right after the intake? I noticed it last week while doing maintenance to mine and this video shows it perfectly, around 4:18
I appreciate the video. I have a similar 205CC briggs engine. Do you happen to have a video that shows you actually adjusting the valves on this engine? Thanks again for the video!
Very helpful and very explaining! tnx! Another question would be....i have problems starting a b&s motor, it gets so hard to pull. But when i remove the spark it just goes normal, i bet this is because of bad valve setup, what would you say? I did disasamble the engine and there arent any problems.
I turn the engine over till 1 valve is fully closed and the other is completely then I ajust the one that is closed ,,no need to be on TDC ,,works for me .
Great Job on the video... I understand that at "top dead center" the exhaust valve is set at .003... My question is to set the intake valve at .002.... where does the piston need to be at? thanks
Thanks so much! This helps. I have a kaw FS481v and it's backfiring once the mower gets warm and is under full load. I'm thinking it's a burnt valve. I already replaced the ignition coils. thoughts? valves have also been adjusted and was also adjusted as well.
Ok i understand about T.D.C. what a the measurement of the valves of a 6.5hp lawnmower what feeler gauge settings do i use to set the valves clearance also do i just turn the flywheel counterclockwise one time and set the valves clearance are do i turn again to set each valves clearance
Question-I understand how a 4-stroke engine works. I also have the same engine in this video. Why after the air filter is there 2 places for air to intake. One that goes directly to the OHV and one that mixes with the fuel through the carborator? Do they both go to the same place? Is this to get more air in the cylinder? thanks
***** I'm using a 212CC predator in my gokart, do you happen to know if I can "customize" the timing at the cam for better top end power like I would with a car? It should be the same right?
i have a predator 79cc engine, i bypassed the governor , but i did not remove it completely, i know this was stupid but i thought i had the govoner lever secure enough where it wouldn't fall into the engine, but it happened i opened up the crankcase and removed the govoner lever but i accidently pulled out the cam shaft, i put i back in lining up the timing marks, but now when i try to start it it feels like it has no compression, it just sounds and feels way off when i pull the starter does this have anything to do with what position the piston is in, all i did was line up the timing marks, can i have your input on this please thanks eric
Do you have a video that shows how to identify when the piston is at 1/4" past TDC when that is the requirement for doing a compression or leak down test?
Just use a dowel or skrew driver from tdc, and mark it level with the spark plug hole. Then take the tool out, grab a tape measure or ruler, and mark out 1/4" above the line you made. Reinsert the tool into spark plug hole. And slowly rotate until the 2nd line you marked out is level with the cylinder head spark plug hole. Its samet thing hes doing here, but your just making a mark on your tool you put in thr spark plug hole. And then adding an extra mark 1/4" above
So would this be the same in an atv 4 stroke engine? i am new to all of this, i took a class on it in school but didn't get that hands on, so i am taking an old four wheeler of mine apart this winter to get it ready for spring, would these valves be somewhere and i could judge what stroke the engine is in the same way as in the video? So when i am done cleaning everything and fixed and put it all back together, i make sure the piston is at TDC?
Great video. Did this to my 800hr 7500w Chinese Honda clone generator by following your explanation and now it's running like new. However, while rotating the crankshaft to find tdc, I noticed moisture dripping out of valve cover breather tube as well as a yellowish oily residue collected at the bottom of the air filter housing. Not much... but it's there. Does it indicate a head gasket leak or other issue? Thanks for your help
Hi dear , thanks for yours great and helpful videos, and i have some questions. I have a honda generator Model eu 3000is , I would like to know for setting up the valves adjust: How much is the clesran setting for the exhaust valv-00 . I'm impressed. Not only did you know what you were doing/talking about, you also were clear-spoken. Props to you, sir!
No sizzle,just steak. Thank you
yours was the first and maybe best instruction for an engine ( Honda 4 stroke tiller ) without a shop manual. I appreciate it. Thanks.
Thank you. Reading about TDC on compression stroke on the internet has confused me. You explained this very well. I understand it perfectly now. Appreciate it.
Simple and clear-- exactly what we came to watch. We Thumbed UP and subscribed.

Thank you for taking the time for making this video, it has greatly increased my confidence as I attempt to adjust the valves on my tractor!
Dude, after watching too many videos, you’re the first to say, just look in the damn spark plug hole. Can’t get much easier than that. Thanks.

Taking a small engine class. This video is extremely well done. Thank you for posting.
Thanks
Wow, finally someone can explain, clearly, in layman terms how to determine TDC! Thank you! Finally got my valve clearances precisely set!!
+Laura Dencer Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Small Engine On Line School 101. Very clearly explained. Well done!
Thanks, I have been trying to figure out which was the intake valve and which was the exhaust. Very good video.
Thank you this video got my 212 predator motor with stage 1 mods to work. Foreever grateful. I had my valves adjusted wrong.
Great video.
I am going to adjust my valves today on my 24HP Husqvarna....
Simple and to the point. Appreciate the post!
another way you can do it is when your exhaust valve is open then you know that the intake valve is closed so you can adjust your Gap then and vice-versa for the exhaust valve
By far the most professional vedio didn't mind the vedio was more than 3mins

By far the best video I've seen on this
as other comments have said , well explained and easily understood, new subscriber !
Great video; really helpful. BTW, thanks for using a tripod.
Very well done video. Thanks for taking time to post it.
Very well done! Great video quality and clearly spoken. Thanks for making, I will watch for more.
Great explanation of how and why. Thank you !

Best video and sound ever seen so far.
What is gap size on valves please.
best tdc video so far
Excellent, very clear and highly logical. Thanks a lot.
Thank you! Terrific video explaining TDC. I feel like a genius now!...ha.ha.. thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome Video. Thanx for going through the trouble of making it.
Nicely done!

Thanks... just what i was looking for... 👏👍
Thanks. I always wondered what is meant by 4 stroke engine...now I know.
Thanks for watching!
Only comment, you talk about it running clockwise. Rotation direction is usually communicated from the pto side, not the starter side.
Thank you!!!
That was totally professional, well-detailed and clear to understand. Much appreciated.

Sounds like your exhaust valve is off.
Includes two 120V outlets and one 12V DC outlet. get it here amzn.to/1GoaIX2
finally understood, cheers Mate!
How do you know fore sure when your at TDC on a Predator 3500 generator when you can't get to the crank nut? Thanks

Great job, thumbs up
Valve gap adjustment should be done at TDC, which means the intake at TDC (all the way forward)? Mine is a Honda GX200 clone.
Not necessary when adjusting valves. When one valve is open (either or) the other is closed .Adjust the closed valve...
Really good explanation thanks.
Thx dude u help me alot ..
Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Very good, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
thank you your video helped me alot
Need some help I opened my valve cover off and one of my piston rods were off, can I just put it back in and restart? ( B&S Generator )
Well explained
My intake piston isn't moving when I pull start it, and it wouldn't crank at all. Is the engine gone?
Good video.

Are there any "small" engines with hydraulic valve lifters?
Kohler Commands have hydro lifters
Rất hay, cảm ơn bạn nha.

Hi dear , thanks for yours great and helpful videos, and i have some questions.
I have a honda generator Model eu 3000is , I would like to know for setting up the valves adjust:
How much is the clesran setting for the exhaust valv-00 .
And how much is the clearance seting for the intak vale.
I need your instructions please,

thanks for sharing...
that engine turns counterclockwise not clockwise rotation is determined from the shaft the other side of the engine and that is counterclockwise...
On a 2 cylinder OHV engine how does it work?
perfect
