- THE NIGHTINGALE is one of the all-time greatest episodes of FAERIE TALE THEATRE, featuring great performances, expert direction by Ivan Passer and a heartbreaking musical score.
The Emperor of Cathay (Mick Jagger) lives in a porcelain palace with his courtiers completely cut off from his people. When he hears about a magical bird called the Nightingale and it's exquisite song, he demands an audience with it. The Kitchen Maid (Barbara Hershey) swiftly leads the Prime Minister (Edward James Olmos) to the bird. When the Nightingale sings for the Emperor, it immediately gladdens his heart and giving nature.
But when a mechanical version of the Nightingale is given to the Emperor, he quickly dismisses the real bird. Now ill and close to death, the Emperor needs the love and companionship of the real Nightingale more than ever...
Featuring strong performances all around. Co-starring Bud Cort as the Master of Imperial Music. Look closely and you'll spot Anjelica Huston and Jerry Hall as the fairies Primrose and Pansy.

Papa introduced me to Faerie Tale Theater in the 1980's. The Nightingale is my favorite of all that I've seen by far. Today this has more meaning than ever to me and of course only his court is allowed to behold the Emperor, but I could not take my eyes off of him. Forgive me. I do not want a punch in the stomach please no.🙏
Thank you so much for posting this! When I was little my parents took me to the video story every Friday to rent a movie, and EVERY single week I picked this movie. For years. My dad would get so frustrated with me and beg me to pick something else. I watched every episode but this one was by far the best. Such good memories.

When I was a kid, every weekend my dad took me to a local video rental store. And I picked this movie, every single weekend, for years. I remember eventually my dad getting mad and saying he was tired of spending money for me to watch the same movie over and over. Anyway, thank you for posting this, what a memory.
Wouldn't be able to get away with these casting choices nowadays, but this was so fun to watch, both as a kid and now. Love the king's bumbling entourage and the scene with the ridiculous dinner.
Since this was produced 40 years ago, and given the highly respectful nature if this episode's intended message, it's not hard to forgive the offense.

I remember watching this on the Disney Channel back in 1995 out of sheer luck (as I was a budding Stones fan back then). Loved Jagger's acting. However, this episode today has aged as well as Bill Cullen's Minstrel Spectacular from 1959.

Like a handful of other episodes of FTT, this one will be understood better by adults than by kids. I definitely appreciate it more now than I did back in the day. The gentle music score and low key performances give it an almost dreamlike atmosphere. There's fine acting all around, with Mick Jagger doing surprisingly well in the lead. He seems like a random decision, but his performance is better than most of us would have expected. And as I mentioned before, there are some details that will go over kids' heads, such as just who the Death Spirit is. Plus, that bit with the two servants planning on calling it Nightingale whether it's a boy or a girl. I'm not so sure the very young will fully comprehend that scene. You might call this a quietly entertaining episode.
I suppose it is like "Ariel" a name for both boys and girls, at least I understood this part like that :B
Shelly pulled off subtle edutainment almost every single time she produced an episode.
Considering the massive ego and superiority complex that Mick Jagger has he must have loved this role! One of my favorite episodes!
When they were serving him various foods, I could hear John Mulaney's imitation of Jagger yelling "No!"

The Emperor can't always get what he wants, but sometimes he gets what he needs.
He was so cold, but nightingale was his beast of burden.
Time was on his side, and his nightmares are all over now.
He didn't smash the mechanical bird, even though it didn't give him satisfaction, but instead he painted it black.

This is how I view "The Nightingale". The intention of dramatizing this story the way it was, was never to offend anyone but to include and celebrate the beauty of Hans Christian Andersen's story. The decade "The Nightingale" was produced was different, when casting choices were made in such a way, vs. now, of course you would want to have representation and rightly so. The cache of actors is broader and more diverse now than it was in 1983. But for what it was worth, nobody who was cast in "The Nightingale", ever stooped to portraying their role as a stereotype. Their make up was subtle enough as to emulate exotic beauty of China not make broad caricatures of any Chinese features. Yes, I know some people consider this 'subtlety' "yellow face", and I think this production walked a fine line in going there. Honestly, I believe if the project was too subversive, Mako and Keye Luke would have had nothing to do with it - and then it can be surmised, as actors maybe Mako and Keye Luke needed the money but as it has been observed over the years, acting on Faerie Tale Theatre, though I believe sincerely was a fun experience for a majority of the performers, every actor wasn't paid astronomically for their participation. To me "The Nightingale"'s one of the most diverse ensembles in the whole series, and how everyone embraces the Chinese culture to showcase its beauty, again, was never intended to offend.

Well, because of discrimation in preceding decades, Hollywood didn't have too many big-name stars of Asian descent. Shelly obviously aimed for big-name talent...
At the time these were made people thankfully knew the difference between fiction and reality and did not get offended at the drop of a hat.

The Nightingale, the faerie tale theater starred Mick Jagger, lead singer of The Rolling Stones.

Knowing certain aspects of this will upset certain people makes it even more entertaining.
At the time this was made, it upset NOT a single person. And that's all that matters is there was a time in history when people had TOO MUCH going on in the REAL WORLD to get upset by something intended as entertainment.

This must be the only episode where Shelley Duvall, the creator of the whole Faerie Tale Theatre series hosts, narrates and stars in all at once.

That's interesting that a comedienne like Shelley Duvall hosted and produced the entire Faerie Tale Theatre series and starred in some episodes like Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, The Nightingale and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and narrated some of those episodes like The Nightingale, The Snow Queen and Puss in Boots while her friend, Teri Garr who is also a comedienne starred as the princess in the 1st episode, The Tale of the Frog Prince.
I was in 3rd grade that was like 2001 that was like 22 years ago when I saw this. I didn’t think about it for a long time until I just found it.

The best part of all of these plays was the Star power of the actors. They had all A listers or in this case mick

Yes, what about James Hong, for example? He is probably best known to non-Asian audiences as the guy who called out "Seinfeld party of four!" in "The Chinese Restaurant" episode of "Seinfeld." But Hong, like Benson Fong, Keye Luke, and Sammee Tong along with and before him, was a familiar Oriental face in many episodic television series' and films, from the 1950s to the present.
Among some of Hong's more popular TV roles were in episodes of "All in the Family," "The Andy Griffith Show," "Dynasty," "Family Affair," "Here's Lucy" "Kung Fu," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and "My Three Sons."

Let this be a lesson to all. Faeries no matter what kind won't do anything for you unless you tell them how pretty they are. Faeries really are the most disgusting and deplorable creatures in all the world, with the exception of the Leprechauns.
Faerie is a community or race of little creatures in nature.
Fairy- a member of the Faerie race that is very vain and selfish.
Pixie- a little bit smaller members of the Faerie race that are mischievous and flirtatious.
Sprite- the smallest of the Faeries they are the enforcers of Faerie law.
Imp- Any faerie that is trapped indoors from sunset to sunrise and must serve their captors
Leprechaun- cunning and mischievous members of the Faeries they are capable of bestowing luck either good or bad, they are the only ones that are not vain and have an attitude.
Brownies- little borrowing faeries that live in the walls of human houses
Boggarts- the malicious side of the Brownie
Nipsy- faeries that are in between the regular Fairy and a Pixie in size and can corrupt a human heart with their charms.
Above all of these things One thing is for certain Faeries DO NOT spread kindness and they also MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT GRANT WISHES.
Yeah, faeries can be nasty little buggers.
Some such creatures CAN grant wishes, from what I've heard, but they always come with a VERY heavy price that isn't worth it.

This was always one of my favorites, visually and musically; I always loved the little nightingale, and it's a good story. However; it always bothered me that the main roles were played by Caucasians. Real Asians only played the lowest roles here, and that also deeply troubles me.
It's a little annoying, but it's a product of the time period it was made.
This could have been a beautiful production; instead it's a racist piece of crap. I'm disappointed in Shelly Duvall.
