Captain Jack Sparrow still, to this day, has the greatest character entrance in a film ever in my opinion.
I'll back you up on that.
one of.... yes
Idk, Phantom menace and the two Jedi's sitting down talking is pretty hard to top
The Terminator is still the greatest entrance in my opinion
Idk vaders entrance in a new hope is hard to beat
"You best start believing in ghost stories Mrs Turner, you're in one."
What a badass line.
I love the 4th wall break on that comment too
Ms. Turner*
Piracy: Is the practice of one ship stealing from another ship for supplies or goods.
Pillaging: Is the practice of stealing from a city for supplies or goods.
Traditional "pirates" practiced both acts of hostility. Normally when they did it on land (a city or fort) it was for supplies more than goods. (food, medicine, material for repairs or weapons). Or they did it in order to capture a city/fort in order to provide protection of a harbor. While it was "rare" for it to happen, when it did happen, it was often mostly a "boarding party/raiding party" more than a ship sailing into the harbor. But because the crew of the Black Pearl was cursed, they didn't fear "death" anymore. Meaning their approach would be "bolder" than most pirate crews.
Also stealing the entire ship :)
quite true! Harbor Forts were true to their name. Absolute fortresses! Also, had a nasty habit of heating up their shots near to melting point so they'd set fire to any ship they hit. A lot of them were also set much higher up in elevation so ships would have a very difficult time firing back. Not to mention the size of fortress guns could be a LOT higher since they didn't have to float. Taking a major port by ship would have been a hell of an undertaking for a well developed fleet let alone a single ship. Most of the time the fort had to be taken by Marine forces landed elsewhere on the island and the fleet was more for dealing with defense fleets. Basically, yes, the black pearl was playing on GodMode lol .
yes, landing parties were needed to take on harbor forts, which was a rare occurrence due to the risk involved. Pirates would rather plunder Spanish gold galleons and Dutch spice merchants than take on a well-defended fortress.
Don't forget ransoming the port/city if captured. If they didn't pay, the pirates would burn to the ground and loot it anyway.
The ride at Disney is a "Dark Ride" which takes you around to various scenes that tell a story. There are some good POV videos that let you experience the ride. I recommend the old ride, pre 2003, as they have since updated it to make it more in line with the movies.
I was about to make a similar comment, correcting her assumption that the movie is based on a roller coaster.
The Pirates Of The Caribbean ride at Disneyland was one of my favourites when my family went there when I was a kid (I was around three years old I think). I don't remember many details as it was so long ago. And due to my young age I was very limited on the number of rides I could go on. But I do remember being fascinated by the animatronics of the pirates.
I would also recommend watching the POV videos that were made pre 2003. Not only did they update the ride to make it more in line with the movies, but they also made them more "Politically Correct". THEY'RE FREAKING PIRATES!!!! They're not supposed to be politically correct!
@@Thundarr100 Yeah, but... One of the "corrections" was to remove the slave market. OK, we know pirates sold slaves but I always thought that the girls, enslaved or not, weren't exactly for kids.
It's now the ride based on the movie based on the ride.
I still fondly remember riding the ride in the 80’s as a kid.
I went as a kid, then went again after the movies. Both iterations were cool. The animatronic of Sparrow singing "Yo-ho" at the end was awesome.
My mother took me to see this when it came out, and I saw its two sequels in theatres as well. Easily one of the best pirate movies of all time, and an all-around fun movie.
There are more than 2 sequels.
@@killinglonliness88 there's only 2 *good* sequels
@@jasonchilado I personally enjoyed them all. They're supposed to be fun, not held under a microscope.
Errol Flynn says hi. I grew up on all the Errol Flynn "swashbuckling" movies in the 80s and 90s. Johnny Depp is great, though.
@@jasonchilado That's your opinion, but opinion doesn't negate FACTS, and there are 5 movies!
21:18-21:32: One of my favorite scenes ever. "But why is the rum gone?"
24:29 "Watch out for honest people, because you never know when they can go rogue." I'm convinced Dasha makes her living as a writer.😂
It's the stupidest I've heard. Does mean that we have to trust dishonest people because they may end up being honest in the end?. That is why women always suffer gender violence, because they always choose bad men with the hope that they will be able to change them.

"I don't think he has a plan yet." That is Captain Jack Sparrow, in a nutshell.
The scene in the prison, with the pirates trying to call the dog over -- that's from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
13:10 -- Zoe Saldaña (best known as Gamora, in the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies)
Im so glad so many reactors have been reacting to Pirates of the Caribbean lately, such a great series that EVERYONE should watch if they havent already !
This is due to Johnny and Amber's process. Wouldn't it?
@@ricocampos1331 I believe so, either way I am hyped that people are getting to know the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow!
The first one was awesome. Then they started to go down hill until they finally jumped the shark.
Lost interest after 3.
@@cuckoonut1208 I feel the same way about Star Wars. And by "3" I mean "Return of the Jedi"
Thank you Dasha. I really enjoy your reactions. It was so much fun reliving this incredible movie with you reacting to it.
this movie is almost 20 years old, and it's still just as iconic and amazing as was when it first came out! "But why is the rum gone?" is one of Jack's best quotes from the whole series.
Johnny is making his comeback on RUclips reactions:) That's a very good sign
A lot of the rides at Disney are just visual experiences where you sit in a cart on a track or a boat that floats down a canal, and they're full of animatronics (robots) and projections of whatever the theme of the ride is. They're kind of like watching a play as you move through it. My favorite ride like that was the Stich ride. You end up sitting in a chair with him in the middle of a room and he "breaks free" and the lights go out, and you can hear him whisper in your ear, and their are little fingers that tickle your neck, you hear him burp and you feel the moist warm air that smells like onions. There's a lot more to it but I haven't been there since I was a teen.
This Movie single handedly Revitalized Pirate Movies, They Caught Black Flag Lightning in a Bottle
When this movie came out it was so unbelievably good!! Orlando Bloom was an unknown actor and managed to get Lord of the Rings and Pirates as his first two major roles haha. And of course Johnny Depps Jack Sparrow is an iconic character!
Orlando Bloom had long finished shooting Lotr. This was filmed in 2002, after Fellowship already released in cinema
@@pulpficti yes that's exactly what I was trying to say. He went from being an unknown actor to having two major roles in two of the biggest franchises of all time.
But part in Blackhawk down
Im in my late 40s and when the ad for the movie came out...i was like "Isnt that the boring water boat ride in disney land that my parents like?"
It was!
And I know why my parents liked it: you could sit down, it was dark (not in the blistering sun), and it was AIR-CONDITIONED.
What a perfect ride for parents walking and standing around in the sun all day!
I have the old VHS video at my parents home. It has a slave market. A brothel. It was pretty barbaric...but no one cared. it was a good time.
"I don't think he has a plan yet" must be the best title for Captain Jack Sparrow's autobiography.
Just the fact that you noticed he didn't put the last coin back is amazing.
I live on and work as a crewmember of the boat that played the HMS Interceptor. I'm actually typing this on deck right now. In the main hold above the staircase, we have the prop broken Interceptor nameplate and more at the seaport.
The best thing about Jack Sparrow is that he pretends to be dumb and yet he's always thinking several steps ahead of everyone.
Is he? Is he really? He's almost the definition of chaotic neutral. With no small amount of luck.
@@roepi Chaotic doesn't mean you're not outthinking everyone. Ledger's Joker comes to mind.
One of the best character introductions in modern cinema
Jack Sparrow is the best pirate we'll ever see on tv. Thanks Johnny!
I absolutely love these films! The action is super fun, the humor is really funny, and the characters are so enjoyable.
I’m glad this movie continues to reach a wider audience. It’s truly a classic and if you watch this as a kid, it makes your imagination go wild
I first rode the ride when each ride used special tickets back in the 1970s and earlier. I was highly skeptical, but was hopeful because of Jonny Depp. It was truly a happy surprise of a good movie.
17:40 Will wasn't mad at Elizabeth for telling him the truth, he was mad at how she sacrificed herself and all the suffering he should have endured, was placed on her. The second reason is because he did not want to believe he has the blood of a pirate.
25:00 Jack receiving the curse is because he stole/took the gold, it doesn't matter who takes the gold, pirate or non-pirate, they will receive the curse because the gold itself is cursed.
I loved these movies so much as a kid, me and my friends loved pretending to be pirates on the beach and having sword fights with sticks because of this series. So glad you are watching it, it's great.
Me too.
I remember the first time I saw Keira Knightly I was smitten. She was a big time celebrity crush for me. Oh yeah, and the movie was great too.
Me too.
The first time I saw Keira Knightly was underneath all that white make-up in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
I admit, I "dipped out" of the franchise after Pirates 3. However, there is still something about Pirates 1 that is really satisfying to me, and ironically it isn't Depp's character. I think that being more of a history buff than anything else, it is the effort they took to be as accurate as possible for settings, clothes, political structure and especially ship designs. These elements really "grounded" the movie for me. So when Depp shows up and some of the later "elements" showed up, it was a mix of "okay, I get it. Out of nowhere character interacting with stiff upper-lip society" can be really fun. And the later "elements" were more "okay, and how do other people react". That type of story-telling kept me involved for at least 2 more movies.
"On Stranger Tides" is actually a lot of fun. I've come to appreciate the last 2 movies a lot more.
The fourth one was really good, Ian McShane was incredible as Blackbeard. The fifth one wasn't so good, it seems to ignore a lot of details and facts established in previous films, for example the nature of the Dutchman's curse and the origin of Jack's compass.
Commodore Norrington has a rough go in these movies, which you’ll see if you stick with the trilogy. Some of my favorite experiences at the cinema was seeing the sequels opening night. I didn’t watch this one at the movie theater because I knew it was based on the ride and didn’t think it could possibly be any good… man, was I wrong about that.
I also love that sword skill rarely decides who wins sword fights in these movies. Will is hands down the best swordsman, but doesn’t know how to play dirty. Jack is a good swordsman, but usually gets disarmed or has to resort to trickery when he’s bested. As he says, “That’s not much incentive for me to fight fair then, is it?”
A fun film! provided that the numerous historical inaccuracies are ignored.
For example, the film repeats the myth that women were forced by anyone to wear uncomfortable corsets.
Women wore them if they wanted to. At this point in time, some men wore corsets, so it wasn't even exclusively a women's garment. They were not normally uncomfortable because they were custom made and were only uncomfortable if worn incorrectly. In fact, comfort and supposedly reducing back pain were often top selling points.
Great performances by Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightly, and Sir Jonathan Pryce!
The lady Captain that slapped Jack for stealing her boat is Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy. She actually said she had such a terrible time on the set of this movie that she almost gave up being an actress
I've had some terrible times at my jobs too. I guess that's why they call it a job. ---- I'm pretty sure they don't pay me like Gamora.
A conversation with myJapanese ESL student some years ago:

Oh I see. What's a good movie, for example?
- Johnny Depp
He's not a movie.
- Pirates of the Caribbean
Yes, I know it. What's it about?
- Johnny Depp
No, the story. What's the story about?
- Ah ah, story! Understand. Er- It's about - er- pirates
Go on.
- Mm. Pirates ...
Yes, yes pirates? Tell me more.
- Pirates ... of the Caribbean
Oh I see.
Mm ... Johnny Depp.
Something I don't think lots of people realize is that when Elizabeth is eating right before the reveal of the curse, the reason she goes from eating properly as she's been taught to eating hunks of meat from the bone is that because she's pretending to be a maid, she would never sell that story if she eats like she normally does.
In my opinion, Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the best and most lovable characters in cinema history.
Keith Richards (guitar player for The Rolling Stones) was Johnny Depp's inspiration for his Jack Sparrow character.
I really hope you will react to the second and third movie of this franchise as well. The "Verbinski trilogy" (this three movies) are so damn good and they will work even in emotional aspects, not just the jokes or action. The last movies of this franchise are honestly in my opinion pretty weak but 1-3... yeah, you really should continue.
I found that by the third movie it was starting to stretch the premise thin, especially because it relied on a LOT of retcons to make the plot work and sudden plot twists that weren't very well built up. The less said about the other two the better.
I agree. The first 3 are just great! 1st and 3rd are probably my favorites. I liked On Stranger Tides well enough, but Dead Men Tell no Tales actually kinda upset me. I won't go into it in these comments so as to avoid spoilers for her, but yeah. There was one thing about the last one that kinda ruined it for me.
"Any man who falls behind...is left behind."
Dasha: Oh, that's mean and cruel.
Jack Sparrow: "Pirate."
Geoffrey Rush rolling his eyes is so good 😅
Ms. Dasha, I love your take on this movie and thanks for sharing it with me! Please keep up the terrific work!
I lived in Hawaii when they filmed this. It was really cool to see that ship floating around the island for several months.
I'm actually in this movie. @16:53, I'm the big bald guy in the orange shirt. My character's name is Tearlach. In the third movie, I play someone else altogether.
While never stated in film, it has been confirmed that the Pirates movies take place sometime between 1720 and 1750. In real life at that time, there actually were several notorious pirates in the Caribbean. And that time period was after the Queen Anne's War of the early 1700s.
The original Pirates of the Carribean ride at Disneyland didn't really have a firm story, it was mainly taking a boat through a number of corridors with animatronic people and sets on the side and pirate music playing, from what I remember. It has probably gotten upgrades to include the movie cast and scenes.
I suggest watching videos of the original Pirates Of The Caribbean at the various Disney parks; as you'll see, they inspired this movie more in theme and setting rather than any sort of plot. Also, just so you know, Jack Sparrow, who can be seen on the ride, was added well after the movies made the character popular.
Glad to see you sharing in this classic pirate adventure.
I took my sister to see this movie while on leave from the navy. We enjoyed it... although strangely she later denied having enjoyed the movie.
I understand your question, Dasha! Many Disney rides tell a story. They are often different from a roller coaster that relies on speed and turns for thrills. People ride Disney rides to experience stories. Another movie based on a Disney ride is Jungle Cruise.
Amazing to think the most successful pirate movie before this was Muppet Treasure Island...
Which Dasha should also react to.
By far this is the best performance Johnny Depp has made as Captain Jack Sparrow
With so much going on, sometimes watching a reaction allows the viewer to notice things 'for the first time' since they aren't as invested in the movie while it unfolds. I noticed Jack also does the 'apple eating' trope, but the one he eats is green where every other movie scene with this is a red apple. Not sure if that relates to Snow White or is coincidence.
"anamaria" played Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy btw
The ride at Disneyland isn't a rollercoaster. It's a dark ride, which basically means it's a slow moving ride that tells a story. It's 20 minutes long. And it's actually pretty cool. You can probably find video's of it on RUclips if you're curious. Though it's not the same as being on it in person.
Not gonna lie, i grew up watching pirates of the Caribbean. Thank you for watching it.
He didn’t put the P on his arm, another group did so that he would always be recognized as a pirate wherever he goes
Depp's always good, but he really killed it in this one.
The 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo is also a really good movie!
The Pirates is of the Caribbean was the last, or one of the last rides that Walt Disney was directly involved with. They used real skeletons in the ride, and eventually replaced them all ... but one. It's the skull in the headboard of the captain's bed.
It’s been 20 years and this marks the first successful adaptation of a Disney theme park ride
To most this wouldn’t have worked but thanks to director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer it does as a classic, fun swashbuckler
A brilliant cast and my first introduction to Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, Geoffrey Rush, and Johnny Depp
There’s plenty of adventure, funny lines, good ol’ fashioned thrills, romance, and a creative mythology
Jack Sparrow stands out still as one of the most fun Disney heroes; he’s flamboyant and likable yet absurd and selfish even if he’s a cad, a thief, and a deceiver stopping at nothing for his own personal gain
Rush is eating up every moment as the villain and Bloom and Knightly make for good star crossed lovers
Lots of this hearkens back to the classic days of the 1920s but still using modern techniques
Perhaps the biggest appeal is that pirates are just plain cool being antiquated rockstars given they’ve been roguish fixtures of storytelling for centuries
Crazy this lead to 4 sequels, multiple theme parks, and featured as a playable level in Kingdom Hearts 2 video game
Maybe a bit too many winks to the audience about other Disney stories than the actual ride
Elizabeth has charm and wit if William is boring
But still a fun adventure even if the writing isn't spectacular but clever enough to get in a lot of information
You buy the rivalry of Jack and Barbossa as well
It’s the definition of a turn your brain off experience
It’s amazing the movie recreated a sense of nostalgia for the genre while also being satirical poking fun at the genre
I’m happy this remains one of Disney’s most successful franchises
Zoe Saldana's agent is a genius. She's got a small part in this franchise but major roles in both the "Avatar" and MCU franchises. So awesome. ;-)
She was awesome in The Losers, as well.
21:30 "But why is the _rum_ gone?"
😏 Ah, Jack.
Yeah, Commodore Norrington's reaction in the end makes the movie so good for me. There's no typical intrigue out of jealousy like always, only "friendly" people all over the place, that's really nice for a change.
Savvy is french slang for "understand" or "understanding". Many settlements in the caribbean and places like Louisiana were french, and some became pirates.
The first movie of a Great franchise or series I guess. I never realized that you had aired/reacted to this series before. But I do now, and I am excited to see your reactions. AND, again you are sharing the experience with us. Thank you, Dasha.
The early 2000s were peak movies.
Dasha: "...the day you almost caught Jack Sparrow"
Jack: "CAPTAIN!!! Jack Sparrow"
The man is sensitive about his title.
If he's not the page quote on the Insistent Terminology page on TV Tropes, then TV Tropes has gone further downhill than I thought.
Captain Sparrow's true nemesis is waiting for him on the poop deck.
I enjoyed the first trilogy, they were like Narnia's Chronicles (until its second movie, YOU CAN MADE A REACTION OF THAT). The movie is perfect: there is a principal character (Orlando Bloom), a co-principal character (Johnny Depp) who makes us to think he is the principal, and very others iconic characters. Oh... and their next adventure starts in the second movie, when you will see an amazing quest and a remarcable villain, everyone with an objective and different personal reasons.
This movie is such a classic, the script, acting and effects are all excellent
Fun fact: This movie was rated "Arrrr".
You had a really accurate read on Commodore Norrington. He's Will's romantic rival, but that doesn't automatically make him a villain. At the end of the day he's all right.
If you play Dungeons & Dragons: Jack and Barbossa are chaotic neutral, Beckett from East India Trading Company (only in one scene in this, but much more important in next 2 movies) is lawful evil, Will and Elizabeth are chaotic good, and Norrington is lawful good.
Also a lot of times the pirates would raid and pillage towns like that for food ammo weapons and money cuz pirates weren't all that rich back then and stuff did cost a lot still back then as well
1. How can you make a movie from a ride? Captain Jack Sparrow and some great creative writing with a Hans Zimmer soundtrack. So much better than expected. 2. I love the British accent but I need subtitles. So cute Dasha. We're so happy when we get to hear. "Oh shit" and "shit shit shit" Warms my heart when you have a good time. Take care
You were 5 yrs old when this came out. God I feel old 😆 🤣 Great show Dasha keep up the terrific work 👏 👍
I can't believe you've never seen this yet! It's a classic
Jack Sparrow is the man. No one can play him but Johnny Depp.
Johnny Depp based his character on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. (They are personal friends.)
Captain jack sparrow is funny lol 😂 and the best pirate
The name of the Disney ride is a fantasy version of real events. There was a great deal of piracy in the Caribbean a few hundred years ago. Pirates became romanticized by books and movies. "Aaaarrrrgggghhh matey" The Jolly Rodger" Black Pearl Party Cruises in Bridgtown, Barbados is an example of a pirate-themed experience. There are many more all over the Caribbean. My wife and I almost had a pirate theme wedding.
anybody else getting distracted by the dog sleeping in the bagground:P
The actor Orlando Bloom who plays Will also played the elf Legolas in Lord of the Rings.
I’ve played this film score in an orchestra.. the bass trombone parts were so much fun
They may claim it's based on a ride at Disneyland, but it's far more clearly based on the Monkey Island games
The ride is pretty much just a slow moving boat and you see a bunch of animatronic pirates, shooting guns, drinking, singing. The movie didn’t exactly get any story from it.
There’s references to the ride in the film. The song A Pirate’s Life For Me, the prisoner pirates trying to get the keys from a dog, some similar scenery to Tortuga, a skeleton or two. Thanks to the popularity of the movies, they added a couple animatronic Jack Sparrows to the ride
Fantastic job on your sponsor commercial. You are a natural. Well done.. the presentation and direction, editing are great. That is a commercial on RUclips I do not mind watching.
Aww, doggie just passed out on the couch! XD
Im still impressed by how little CGI they used for this film
" 'Savvy' -- it means, like, 'understood'?" It's almost always used as a noun or adjective describing shrewdness or practical, worldly judgement, or someone who has that shrewdness -- but yes, here it's used exactly as you've infered. However, this is a very uncommon usage, so it feels unique to the pirates in this franchise.
30:46 there should be a captain in there somewhere
LOL.
You could burn the entire island from under Jack, as long as you don't burn the rum! 😂
Americans have always loved the romanced pirate story
The character Jack Sparrow is an original character created by Johnny Depp. Hyundai originally wrote the script they didn't have Captain Jack Sparrow but because of Johnny Depp's audition as Captain Jack Sparrow they literally rewrote the entire script just so they can put Captain Jack Sparrow in it that's the brilliance of Johnny Depp.
13:10 She is Gamora. Zoe Saldaña she also plays Uhura in Star Trek and Neytiri in Avatar.
Captain Jack Sparrow
What arrrrrrr ya' doing!??
7:31 if pirates were powerful enough, had a number of ships and large crews, they would attack settlements and forts. Most notably, Blackbeard's Blockade of Charleston South Carolina.
Early in my time in the Navy, I was quick to get used to being out to sea. Then again, the ships I was on were much bigger, so rough seas didn't rock them as much as any ship in these movies.
The studio wanted Will and Elizabeth to kiss in the middle of the movie. The writers saw the kiss as a reward for the characters and the audience and felt it shoud be kept for the end, when it is earned.
IRL it was common for women to have "fainting spells" (ie. to faint). It took them about 100 years for someone to realize it wasn't because they were women, but rather because it was fashionable for them to wear corsets under their dresses to make them look thinner, which were much too tight for them to breathe.
0:59 ..... "How a movie can be based on a rollercoaster?"..... That's the proof that, when the mouse wants your money, he'll do whatever it takes..... So here I wonder: When they re going to do a movie about Space Mountain?..... Cause the ride was quite dissapointing.....
In a way, if Johnny Depp had ever played the Joker, I imagine he'd be a charismatic and mind-gaming guy just like Jack Sparrow, only more violent.
THX Dasha❤️ for a wonderful reaction ❤️👍🏾👏🇸🇪
"this will be the day you almost caught captain jack sparrow"
Hopefully he can say that after the final day of his court hearing...
