ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Sir Jony's work and patents have played a pivotal role in shaping Apple's successes over the last two decades. Jony has led Apple's design team since 1996. He holds over 5,000 patents and has been recognized with numerous design awards, including the Design Museum London’s first Designer of the Year in 2003, the Design and Art Direction (D&AD) President’s Award in 2005 and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum’s Product Design Award in 2007. Jony is Apple Inc.'s Chief Design Officer, reporting to CEO Tim Cook. He is a native of London, a graduate of Newcastle Polytechnic and holder of honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Art and Northumbria University as well as the Rhode Island School of Design.
ABOUT THE PROFESSOR HAWKING FELLOWSHIP:
The Professor Hawking Fellowship was founded by the Cambridge Union Society in 2017 and named in honour of Professor Stephen Hawking. The Fellowship is awarded to an individual who is distinguished in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and who has made a historic and/or significant contribution to social discourse in the STEM fields. This year, it was Sir Jony Ive who was to receive the Fellowship.

In speech, as in his designs, Johnny seems to have that awesome ability to convey a high density of information in a highly understandable way.
My deepest respect and thanks to Cambridge Union for such a phenomenal, high caliber, high achiever guest. Johny Ive always has a special place in my heart. It is a privilege to hear his vision.

Cook is making movies, entertainment, even apple events are entertainment now, no more following idea of "great tools to help us"(focus on extérieur apple as companies) no more on human, help or care !

Unfortunately, Jony Ive is devoid of any sense of genuine care for the user.
The horrible design of symmetric side buttons that most of the time result in screenshots or shutting down the screen while grabbing the phone.. The horrible camera bump and sharp edges on iPad Pro... Pencil that needs to be connected every time before you pick it up.. the annoying persistent home button indicator, wasted space, lack of true usability.. the list can go on forever
To put it simply, Jony Ive is one of the most overrated designers. He merely designs drafts of products that Apple sells as finished ones. Glib and hubris.
I disagree. The user experience on Apple products can't be matched by any other competitor. Apple's design team has always been on top of the game, it is instantly recognizable and consistent. Can it be improved? Of course.
iPhone is the only smartphone that has a beautiful stainless steel that is polished. The attention to detail on iPhone is unrivalled. From the matching unibody colour of the speaker grill to every single button’s edge being Matt or polished depending on the unibody material and texture. The camera has a beautiful Sapphire Crystal, a Quad-LED True Tone Flash and a beautiful Polished Stainless steel accent around the module.
Ameer Ali Ouarda I know, but attention to details is pointless without looking at a big picture. Usability of Apple products is pretty bad. Apple does not care about ergonomics and real life use. Almost every day I am annoyed how ignorant Jony Ive's design is - using Apple Watch when wearing a sleeve, operating ios devices with sweaty palms on a bike, trying to do something in compete darkness, etc. Ive designs toys not tools.

I disagree. Samsung’s ONE UI has taken heavy inspiration from the iOS, by putting controls at the bottom of each app such as Clock (for example). But putting them at the lower portion of the app it’s easier to reach. There is additionally reachability. Furthermore, the camera bump is eliminated as soon as you put it in the case. iPhone is still the only smartphone that’s has no bottom bezel, and the competition has had since 2017 to catch up. Furthermore, the front and rear glass is subtly curved to provide seamless transition in materials and makes swiping from the bottom and the side a more seamless and “meant to be” experience with both hardware and software considerations. iOS 7 pushed the entire mobile software industry forward for a more simplistic, test beautiful design trend. Of course there’s areas to improve upon such as a Dark Mode, but to say Apple does not care about ergonomics is hard to believe. The 5.8 inch iPhone has a massive screen, in such a compact design. It’s the shortest 5.8 inch screen phone you can get. As with the 6.5 inch, that is also the shortest phone of its screen size you can get. It’s both less thick and less tall than the 6.3 inch Note8
Ameer Ali Ouarda Watch Objectified - the documentary about industrial design if you haven't. What you write is true but it's an incomplete picture. Good design is defined on how it works in extreme cases. iPhone does't work well in extreme cases, mentioned above. FaceID is unusable when holding the phone close to face in bed, the button layout often results in accidental screenshots, it is even more to restart the phone with the new button sequence (and restarting is a must every other day if you want your phone to work), the screen is flickering and unreadable in darkness when reduce white point is turned on, SIRI turns very easily by accident because of the button placement, it is very hard to record good videos without accessories (there is no resting place for fingers, the phone is slippery, fingers obscure the view, etc), the phone gets hot and is unpleasant to touch.... I could go on and on. Please understand, Apple designs for 50% of use cases and when you really need to do something less conventional with the phone, it always fails - both in hardware and software. I am not talking about aesthetics, but what Ive says in interviews - "Design is how a product works not how it looks" - yet he focuses on the looks.
Add to that how you miss a phone call because either the phone doesn't relay the call to Apple Watch or when Airpods take ages to pair before you want to take the call. No amount of polished steel or other nonsense makes up for it.
