Thank you to everyone for the recent boost of support we've received. I'll be staying away from the comment section for now as I don't want to fall on any spoilers, but I'm looking forward to binge-reading them all at the end of the series! Xx

Joe Toye rejoining the unit even though he was still supposed to be recuperating from his wound, Bill Guarnere running out to help the severely wounded Joe knowing incoming artillery was on its way any second, Don Malarkey reading the psychologically devastated Buck's letters from home to him and, even though he was on the verge of breaking down himself, refusing to leave the line until Lip convinced him that it would mean a lot to Buck if he went back to say goodbye to him. Just a few examples of the loyalty and love between these men and the courage they draw from it.

Lipton's practical understanding of psychology and the skillful way he takes care of the mental state of his men is impressive. He's a good leader and absolutely deserved that commission.

I taught Hoobler's great nephew. He had read the book, and thought it was interesting but had no idea it was his grandma's brother. We put it together. Even wrote to Stephen Ambrose about it, who wrote back and told us the nephew had big shoes to fill. Also told us that "productions begun on a mini series based on the book and interviews". Hoobler's family had split up during the depression, with some kids going w dad and some with mom. Over time they sort of lost track of each other. His great nephew thought he had a relative "that had something to do with Dday", but that was about it. Felt pretty good about that whole thing. Still have the letter, too...right in the book.

This series is a sad reminder that there are only about 100,000 American WWII Veterans still alive. The greatest men of the greatest generation. We should honor those Vets still with us and pray for those Vets, like my father, who have gone to their eternal rest.

Even here he's showing the same symptons as Buck Compton but because they dont know him they dont realise it. He got hit in the shoulder going into Foy but a few days before had dragged 3 men to safety at Bastogne which led to him winning his 2nd Bronze Star. He's hard done by with his portrayl here.

When you opened this by stating you have had a tough week I was VERY concerned…for YOU! Ep7 is a tough episode. I used to think Ep9 was the most difficult (and it is difficult…but in more of a big picture way). I’ve since decided I think THIS is the most difficult because it DIRECTLY impacted so many men of Easy Co. Men we’ve developed a deep attachment to over the previous 6 episodes. You did an amazing job. I see others have said it more eloquently in the comments. I think I can speak for most who are with you on this journey. WE appreciate your reactions because it is so apparent that you GET IT! Thank you as always. I pray for you to have a much better week upcoming. Peace.

37:21 "You feel proud but you provably dont want more responsibility". Lipton got promoted but his responsibility probably went down. As the company First Sargeant (1SG), he was the highest ranking enlisted soldier in the company and reponsible for the welfare of all the enlisted men in the company (3-4 platoons). As a 2nd Lt. platoon leader, he was only responsible for the men his own platoon.

Great reaction and commentary! I hope that all is better at home (because this episode really puts things into perspective). In April, I went on a camping trip near Mt. Shasta and Burney Falls (in Northern California). I thought that it would be a great trip despite the snow on the ground and very low nighttime temperatures (around 20 degrees Fahrenheit/-6.7 degrees Celsius). After all, I had a weatherproof tent, sub-zero rated sleeping bag, plenty of firewood, wool socks, thermal hiking boots, etc.). However, it was soooooo cold!
Each morning, we had to wait to go hiking until we could feel our toes (which were very numb from the cold). It was almost a miserable experience in the early mornings. Yet, during that trip, I remember thinking about the men in Bastogne. Not only did they have to survive, but they had to keep warm and even be ready to fight. They didn't have the things that I had with me. I have so much respect for those men. Not only were they motivated by their cause; but, they toughed it out in conditions that most people will never experience.
Oddly enough, I'm headed for another camping trip this weekend in the same general area (this time at Lassen Volcanic National Park). The plan is to hike to the top of Lassen Peak (nearly 10,500 feet in elevation) along with some other hiking areas in the national park. The temperatures should be in the low-40s or even 30s (Fahrenheit) at night. I'm glad that you posted this video this week so that I won't internally complain about how cold I feel.

Dike was apparently misrepresented. On the attack on Foy he was actually doing what Winters wanted, was leading the men the same way Spears wound up doing. Dike was actually wounded pretty badly to the point his blood loss caused shock, hence why he froze up. He might not have been the answer to lead Easy, but he was more competent than Hanks and Spielberg portrayed him.

Dont take BoB as gospel - in the same episode Shames is shown to be an incompetent disliked shouter but he was extremely competent and generally well liked and he and one of his men taking out a Tank with a Bazooka is completely omitted whilst Foley is reduced to badgering Dike when he shuts down probably to make Spiers look like a brilliantly competent officer by making others look worse than they were or perhaps because they had already shown Harry and one of his guys taking at a Tank in episode 3.

You mean commendations, an accommodation is a place you stay. The series is shown from 506th PIR's point of view, taken from their memoirs and interviews. To them, Dike was, at best, an unreliable leader, and, at worst, an absent one. During the attack on Foy, when Dike seemingly gets overwhelmed and loses it, it is indeed because he was shot in his right shoulder. However, due to all the winter clothing he was wearing, neither the wound, nor the blood was visible, so the soldiers assumed he had broken under pressure and was delirious, when in reality, this was all due to shock and blood loss. Once Dike was pulled off the line, Clancy Lyall stated that he noticed the wound.
I am by no means saying Dike was a bad person or a bad leader. He had, afterall, been awarded a Bronze Star in Holland for organizing scattered parachutists and successfully defending a key junction on the Eindhoven-Arnhem MSR, while completely surrounded. He was then awarded a second Bronze Star at Bastogne where he, alone, managed to pull three wounded soldiers into cover, while completely exposed to intense enemy fire.
However, multiple members of Easy stated that he constantly disappeared, was very inattentive to the men and would prefer staying in his foxhole rather than being on the frontline, which is why they nicknamed him "Foxhole Norman". Winters, Babe and Guarnere, all talk about Dike in their memoirs in an unfavorable manner.

      @alphaomega2117 3 месяца назад

Well he did go into shock and I beleive sort of broke down after. To be honest when you watch this episode his behaviour is very similar to Buck's - distracted and disconnected and I think both men were probably sufferign very similar conditions. I think the fact they omit his 2 Bronze Star wins does him a great disservice because it's likely he wasn't a bad office at all but rather like Buck a man who was suffering from one of the mental conditions that many of these guys developed during and after the war.

A helluva shot using iron sights. An even more impressive shot knowing you are shooting at a guy with a scoped rifle, who has already demonstrated his ability.

That's exactly the right thing to do. And its gross, but in modern war, then you paint a T on his forehead in using your finger and his blood, and note the time as well so the aid station knows what you did and at what time. German artillery was excellent. They knew all the tricks......lay down a barrage, then stop for a few minutes, then hit the exact same spot five minutes later. An exploding artillery round throws out steel shards that can kill anywhere within 25-30 yards of the exploding round. The best spot you can be is in a hole in the ground.
Unless the round hits a tree and goes off. In which case the steel splinters are joined with equally lethal wood splinters. And because the round explodes above the ground, you aren't even safe in your foxhole, unless you have logs as overhead cover.
The movie doesn't really show it (except in the "Crossroads" episode), but US Army artillery was as good as the German's, except there was easily twice as much of it going the Germans direction.

Keep in mind that the portrayal of Lt. Dike is based on subjective recollections. A little over a week prior to the attack on Foy, Lt. Norman Dyke earned a Bronze Star for bravely exposing himself to enemy fire to recover three wounded members of his company. He wasn't a coward, and he was wounded during the attack on Foy, and the are conflicting accounts - some saying he just fell apart, others saying it was the wound that caused him to lose control. Even though the depiction of objective facts is debatable, the depiction of what the battle felt like subjectively standing in the boots of the soldiers who were there is spot on.

    A couple of points…
Back in the old days, say the Trojan War, it was all about warriors and individual bravery. Think Achilles and Hector.
Now since the in Industrial Revolution war is about production, making armaments or destroying the enemy’s ability to make them. The Allies and Axis had very different ideas about economics. In the UK and USA women were placed on the lines of industrial production. Rosie the Riveter is celebrated. Hitler, with these misogynistic ideas about women in the work force, wanted women at home taking care of children. So the work of making munitions was shifted over to foreign workers or workers in the concentration camps. It was very easy to sabotage munitions. A firing pin could be a millimeter off and the shell would be a dud. Of course, if a worker were caught committing an act of sabotage it would be a death penalty. I’d like to think that the dud for Luz and Lipton was the result of sabotage.
The song the girls sang in the choir was not a religious hymn. It dates back to 1784, Plaisir d’Amour. It has been covered in French by many artists. I like Mireille Mathieu. Then the tune got a key change, a new bridge, and some dinking around to accommodate English lyrics. This became Falling in Love with You, one of Elvis’s most loved songs.
Hope you are able to visit the Normandy beaches and Bastogne.

Oh that’s it. I knew there was a familiar motif there but I couldn’t place it. That music sung at that point in the show is very well placed

Dyke was done a disservice by the scriptwriters. in real life, Dyke was relieved after he was wounded, and all indications are that he was actually a pretty decent leader.

Dyke was a pretty brave man, earned several medals for saving soldiers. The guys from Easy simply didn't like him at all. And yeah, he got shot during the assault and was in shock, couldn't think clearly to give orders any longer.

What we are visualizing in Band of Brothers is happening every day in Ukraine. Pray that Ukraine will be liberated from the Russian Nazis soon!

Ukraine has swastikas on their tanks. The Anzo, yeah, the Nazis. Russia already dealt with Nazis once and they are beating them again. Calling Russia Nazis is about as dumb as a human can get. Ukraine needs to be liberated from Nazis, but they don't spell it like that now. Today they spell it N A T O.
