Regardless of which political side you're on, we have to thank O'Farrell and Gladys for making it a metro. It has platform screen doors as standard compared to not having them if it was a Sydney trains station. The conversion of the Bankstown line is worthwhile on that fact alone. This will save lives.
Not only that, but it will benefit the rest of the network! With less unique paths on the city circle causing congestion, more rolling stock freed up for other services, greater accessibility to public transport at these stations, more frequent services overall, it's an overall beneficial project. That being said, no one will deny that it would've been better if the metro had gone into new areas, like Earlwood, Roselands, and maybe travelling further west to serve areas or South to create new interchanges at stations on the East Hills and Illawarra lines. But nonetheless it will be an exciting and beneficial project!
Yeah I've come around. I'm a fan of the double deckers but you have to give credit for level boarding (finally!) and raw travel times going down. Mostly I'm looking forward to the amazing city stations. They're better than they need to be - and how often does that happen in life!
@@FabDoesStuff city circle congestion is a fallacy. The T3 filled gaps in the city circle because of the multi stop pattern of the T2 which will remain in place. In any case if you live in Liverpool you will now have even fewer and longer options in to the CBD. 65 minute journeys now when once we used to have a 48 minute service. Would have been so much better if the Metro was elevated above the existing Bankstown line to do all stops between Bankstown and Sydenham while the existing line could have been changed to an express line between Bankstown and Sydenham.
@@carisi2k11 @carisi2k11 that's in the future. That's why the Bankstown metro platforms are temporary. There's a plan (although deferred) to extend the metro to Liverpool via Moorebank which is a more direct route. Actually there are 8 paths vacated by the Bankstown line 4 will go to Airport and 4 will go to inner west line via Regents Park. The travel time has increased a bit because there's only 6 tracks between Strathfield and Central. 2 of them is dedicated to Western Line and Blue Mountains, Central Coast and due to it being at Capacity the first two mentioned has to run Parramatta then first stop Strathfield, then Redfern and Central The other two are used by Northern line. Which leaves Liverpool services having to share only two tracks between the all stops Parramatta service, Leppington trains and soon Regents Park trains. There's no point of express when you're just going to be stuck behind an all stopper. That's why Liverpool trains now stop all stops in the inner west during some peak services.
I wasn't sold at first; I see how it's a genuine upgrade, with increased frequency and level boarding, but I wasn't convinced that it was ENOUGH of an upgrade to justify taking away our rail service for a year. After the multiple people falling on the tracks over the last few weeks, yeah, nah, I've come around. If we can have a service upgrade which ALSO prevents these tragedies? That's a bargain.
I love the reason they took the Bankstown line out of the city circle is to relieve congestion for the city circle but they put another line on the Corridor running near the parramatta river along the T2 line into the city circle. That is really great (sarcasm)
Should continue to Liverpool. There are big swathes of suburbs around Bass Hill, Condell Park etc that have zero mass transit access. And then perhaps on to the new Airport (unless the Leppington line is extended) to provide a second link outside of St Mary's which only services the airport from the North and far West. Heathrow Airport in London is serviced by THREE train lines, 2 of which are express.
It's some great work by the previous government but lets not forget that 14 months into the current bumbling fools "year of pain" for commuters we're still having signal breakdowns at Central. AND MORE EXPENSIVE FARES!
The 'year of pain' was to correct the complete lack of trackwork while the liberal govt was in power, don't blame the people fixing it, blame the people that caused the problem.

Metro not used with bifurcated lines, which is what would happen if Bankstown metro is extended to Liverpool. That's heavy rail that switches. The reason metro is so efficient is it's on a dedicated line. If you want to switch to another line, the passenger switches trains, not the train switches tracks. Way more efficient.
Good to know the T3 trains won’t stop abruptly after the metro opens. But the T6 line should have been utilised much better. A branching service is a no brainer, considering the T3 already does this with Liverpool services. It was a wasted opportunity to not branch the new line towards Parramatta bypassing Lidcombe station. An obvious freight corridor already does this and even some special services from the city use’s it, such as The T1 via Bankstown. Misguided that we still don’t have a direct train link to Parramatta via Bankstown. Otherwise we have to catch a direct bus.
