Usually in mexico we add a ring of steel at the edge of the disk so it can hold oil for fried chicken on the disk oh and add the thin potatoes to fry u will love it greetings from mexico. (2" thick the ring).at least

    • @BurningRiverBushcraft
      @BurningRiverBushcraft  6 лет назад

The ring is a good idea. It's deep enough already to fry fish. To fry chicken I would have to keep the chicken rotated. Thanks for watching.

Dude i was literally sitting here plotting on making my outside fire pit into one of these. it's rusted and just been sitting outside. i looked at it one day and decided i was gonna turn it into one of these. i'm probably going to use it with wood, dig a small hole in the ground and put the stand over it. i'm glad i stumbled upon this video! good stuff

My inlaws made a huge hobo stove out of half a 55gal drum and set it on top. Feeding the fire through a square hole in the side.
He made a paddle like spatula out of wood.
    Makes excellent fajitas.

Awesome video. Very real and down to earth and no doubt on going with the bigger disc. Going to add a space for this on the outdoor kitchen area and will be adding a few of these to the new miller welder projects for deer camp and man gifts. Thank you for putting this out there!

I sandblasted mine inside and out. Once it was cleaned, we kept blasting with lower pressure to remove the tooth and then wire wheeled the inside to make it super smooth. Once seasoned its awesome and super easy to make.

I'm making my own DIY Skottle and have a rusty plow disk that I put in a pan of distilled vinegar. I can rub my finger across it after 4 days and the rust rubs off and I see black steel. No grinding so no grinding off metal. I will leave it soaking for another 3 days and then take it to the carwash and pressure hose it clean to get the vinegar off. This plow disc was rusty AF and I don't own a grinder so I believe I will be able to clean it off with a wire brush.Thank you for this video. I live in So Cal so it took some doing to find a farm that had one for sale.

yea I live in San Diego and Tijuana is 5 minutes away their are lots of black Smith shops down there....I got one made about 25 years ago really awesome..... Discadas which by the way means cooking on a disc have been used in Northern Mexico and I know down
here in Southern California for cooking for a long....long time....I had 12 inch high legs welded on mine so i can just put it over a camp fire when I go camping....the Black Smith made it a little deeper so I can deep fry and put a 2 inch lip all around the edge its 22 inches round.....man it makes the crispiest fried chicken you will ever have and fries up fish and shrimp for tacos real well also.....I go camping a lot and don't even take my Coleman propane stove anymore the discada is all i need.....Good to see it catching on here as well.

It's also called a disco, comal & disc. Looks good. I put a 1 1/2" x 14ga. Of strap metel around the rim of mine. And made a removable tortilla rack out of expanded metal on 1/3 section of my disc. And carry and aluminum bowl that I use to cover it to keep the food warm or to steam/cook things such as potatoes and son on. Just an idea. Wanted to share that i found it handy over the years.

I forgot to add, when seasoning a discada, use about a 1/4 cup of regular table salt mixed with the lard, bacon grease or whatever. The salt keeps the smoke down and seasons the surface much better. Also, when cleaning the surface, if its really gunked up with stuck food on the surface, just boil water in it, pour about a half cup of salt and then get a clean dry rag with tongs and scrub the surface. It gets really clean and doesn't contaminate the surface, unlike soap does. Then a light coating of cooking oil, heat it up to where it barely starts to smoke, immediately kill the fire and , dry it with a clean cloth or paper towel and its ready to store until the next cooking session.

Discos are not used primarily in Nothern New Mexico. Damn near everyone South of San Antonio, TX has one and everyone in the rest of the state knows someone with one. They are used throughout the Southwest and Louisiana. A discada is the meal cooked in the disco. Good video, btw.

What you built is a disco, not a discada. Discada translates to "disced".Any food you cook on a disco is technically a discada (there's a specific dish cooked on the disco that is commonly refered to as discada). Similarly, if you build a grill then any food you cook on that grill is grilled. Just thought I'd clarify for you because it sounds odd the way you were using the word. Great job on the build!

It wont come out spicy even the kids can eat it
Also whenever you fry on your disco
Throw in a whole onion in the oil first to “season” the oil
Pull the onion out when cooked do not let it burn as it will bitter up the oil
