I know this is a four year old video but I have a question - have you ever heard of anyone who has their hands on their hips constantly, as a compulsion? I'm like that. I have autism and this my brain works differently. A couple years ago someone told me (and I didn't know this) that my hands on hips pose made me look a bit intimidating so I'd give off a mixed signal first impression when I'd walk up to someone and start talking all friendly and cheerful sounding. The fact that I'm tall for a girl, 5'9" to be exact, seems to add to that. I wonder if there's a reason I do that? For me, it just feels like a comfortable and natural pose. What's also weird is that I'm emotional and cry easily, and I've been told that I'm the first person they've ever seen cry with her hands on her hips. I wonder if why I have my hands on my hips constantly is because I get my feelings hurt easily and even though I like to be friendly and talk to people, on some level I'm a little scared of everybody.

Robin Brown Hi! I’m 5’9” too and yes our height can be intimidating. With any body language movement it starts as a comfortable pose because it matches why’s going on in your mind. Then it can become a habit. There’s lots about autism that i don’t know (my husband is a bit this way) but if part of what you do is compulsive habits then that could explain it. If you want to change what you’ve doing then be aware of when your hands go to your hips and change it every time you catch it. You could switch to crossed arms but that won’t make you much less intimidating. Maybe try clasping your hands in front of you? Let me know how it goes
