How to scream: eliminating air in your fry screams

  • Fry screams being too airy makes many people unhappy with their tone. When there’s too much space between the vocal cords during a fry scream most of our air slips out causing irritation and faster fatigue and tension. A lot of the “body” we associate with the sound is lost, so if you’ve ever felt like there’s something missing in your scream and you can’t figure out what it is or control it a LOT of the time it’s this. Starting with your regular voice and blending only as much fry as you need for what your target sound is can make all the difference. frys are pretty easy, what worked for me me was focusing on how im breathing, i think of it more like im breathing out my mouth and nose at the same time but like through a straw, hard to explain but once you get a nice tight controlled breathe out that you can hold for at least 10-15 seconds slowly add a fry in. i dont like the grudge sound thing, it held me back, i just sorta played around with tightness of the vocal chords, took me about 2 weeks to figure out how to get really good highs i could hold for about 20 sec. now when i record tracks i do false cord lows and switch to fry for highs as i feel fry highs are just better but false lows are superiour

@@ghoulofsorg tell that to my ass who's been trying to do it for 10 years and still just about knows how to make the "fry" sound without even knowing how to turn it into a scream.

Thanks so much! My screams used to sound just like your demonstration with the opened up vocal cords, but then I tried what you suggested and got my first decent scream in only a few minutes! It's by no means perfect and still needs work, but you helped me tremendously!

All I know is when I first started trying to scream I could only go so loud and hold them so long before I hacked up a lung. One night in particular to Korn I fucked up bad lol, could hardly talk the next morning.
Now I can hit much louder, far more powerful screams and do it without hacking up a lung.
A good friend of mine who is in a band, White Stag if anyone is curious, told me a lot of people make the mistake when they scream. They don’t realize a scream, like a singing voice, is unique, and when they don’t sound like their favorite singer they give up or begin to develop bad habits trying to sound like them.
Kudos to this guy though. Excellent control of his voice and the power behind it.
If I could even get to half of this point I’d be so happy

The bit about your scream being unique is a great piece of information for people starting out. It feels like it should be a given, but it's also not something everyone really thinks about.

Thanks to your videos I have learned that my self-taught technique is fundamentally a low fry scream, just with reversed air flow so the "texture" of the sound is slightly different but equally brutal.
Is there any potential physical harm in using this approach?

Idk if someone can help me, I'm doing screaming since 2 years now, and my falsechords and Fry's are pretty okay, but I always have the same problem with my fry screams when I fry scream the air isn't getting out I know it sounds stupid cause the air produces the sound but it's literally not going out I have to stop my fry screams because I need to let air outbefore i feel like exploding. I can't find a single person online that had the same experience so I literally don't know how it's possible and I don't know what to do now someone please help me :(
