If Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have self-respect, dignity, and pride, they should gracefully retire for the greater good of humanity, as they are past their prime years and there is no visible evidence of an upside. There is no shame in accepting that they are done and dusted as cricketers due to a lack of hunger, eyesight issues, and technical deficiencies.

Today is the last day for very few individuals ( like me ) who love watching India play Test Match Cricket. It’s actually the end of an era.
I started hearing and watching Test Cricket 48 years ago when India toured Australia in 1977 and now after another tour of Australia which ended today in 2025 , I feel it’s an end of Test Match Cricket in India. Great players like Gavaskar , Vishwanath , Kapil Dev , Sachin , Dravid , Sehwag , Kumble and many more played in this time zone , when Sachin retired I thought cricket is over , but one player stood out and made us all proud to be fan of Indian Test Match Cricket. Along with Dhoni Rohit Ashwin Bumrah this man Virat Kohli spearheaded the team for last 14 years.
Sadly , after such an exhibition of his playing skills , I feel his body is not responding to what his mind is telling him to do , without him Test Match Cricket in India doesn’t seem to have big future ahead. Only Jaiswal and to some extent maybe Gill is there and the cupboard is bare.
For me and many of us who are the fan of the purist form of cricket , sadly it’s over now. No more 5 days of white clothing , red ball , lunch and tea interval , 2 innings , but yes the memories provided by all the greats will be itched in our heart and mind.
Thank you to everyone who provided us the best of Test Match Cricket.
    05.01.25.

1.Just like in 2018, we went with 4 proper bowlers where the objective was to pick 20 wickets in a test, has died down. We need to bring that back.
2.Develop categories and develop them in the new NCA facility, for example swing bowlers from Ranji- 1,2,3 , HTD bowlers- 1,2,3 cosistent lengths-1 , 2 ,3 at the same time there should be no compromise on discipline in line and lengths, game awareness and adding one more skill in their basket.
    3. Create only 2 types of pitches for ranji- Flat decks and green tops, which would help bowlers with their line and lengths and batsmen their discipline for leaving the bowls.
    4. Have one proper spinner who can play in all conditions some like, Kumar Karthikeya, Shams Mulani or tanay Thyagarajan , Manav Suthar.
    5. We shouldnt stop investing on backup players even for allrounders like Nitish Reddy.

In a recent chat with you, DK correctly pointed out that we have short term memories. Soon, everyone will forget this debacle. Cricket board can strong arm other boards but finds it extremely difficult to take tough decisions on star/celebrity players. Poor team selection was seen throughout BGT. Ashwin retired mid series!! Rookie seamers, Sarfaraz warming the bench, no test temperament within the team barring a few players. It is a downward spiral for Indian cricket. Loss against NZ, SL and now AUS!! Terrible time for Indian cricket fans too.

@@vishalapj Sarfaraz was included on basis of his 150 against NZ. Little did they know what he will do in rest of that series. They wanted to save him for pitches like Sydney and Melbourne, provided that the top isn't too green.
Ash was taken for his experience. He couldn't bat as long as Sundar in most occasions under these conditions. Sundar was mostly misused at no. 8. He was supposed to accompany Pant, not Jadeja who cannot provide partnership stability unless he's the attacking batsman in that partnership.
The whole squad making was all over the place. Yes, Ash is better than both Jaddu and Washy as a bowler in these pitches. However the team selectors had complicated ideas:
      1. Go with Washy in first match because in the conditions we need a better batsman than a good spinner who'll be useless.
      2. Go with Ashwin in second match because his experience and ingenuity is needed for the Pink ball.
      3. Go with Jadeja in Brisbane because spinners literally have no role and he's a good batsman in overcast seaming conditions.
Ultimately it was probably Ash's notion that this was taking him lightly because of his poor performance against NZ. But the real reason was that the selectors never had enough trust on the batting unit in the first place.

Ind's situation in the series shows how hard it is to manage their fast bowlers properly. During Dravid's time as coach, there wasn’t much focus on building a strong backup for our pacers. But in the Shastri-Kohli era, there was a clear plan..Bumrah was rarely used in home matches so he could stay fresh for tough overseas games. Under Dravid, Bumrah & Siraj were overused & new bowlers didn’t get enough chances. Akashdeep only played when Bumrah needed rest, Mukesh got too many games without showing much..Unadkat returned for just one match & Prasidh was ignored after a few games. Promising players like Avesh, Khaleel & Arshdeep hardly got any opportunities. Even now, with so many series happening one after the other, the team management seems lost when it comes to planning for fast bowlers. Kohli & Shastri deserve credit for their smart handling of pacers. Remember the home series against SA, where India’s fast bowlers performed better than the spinners? Shastri, who was often criticized, actually built a strong bowling attack that could compete with the best teams. India now needs someone with a similar vision to rebuild the pace department. Without a clear plan, it will be very hard to win in countries like SA, Eng, NZ & Aus.

Players like Shreyas Iyer and young, new National Team cricketers should me made to lead these "A" teams, which will give way to new Captaincy roles, who can lead India in various formats as these can manage worload balance and specializations, and reduced injuries in crucial tournaments or matches. Gone are those days where there is one captain for all formats, like MSD, Virat, Rohit. for example lets take the 5th test of BGT, Rohit opts out, Bumrah is down with the back stress, and you have Kohli as the stand-in-captain. What if he was dropped for the test owing to his form, who would have led? Rahul, GILL?? NO judgement, but they are hardly regular in the test format, and they don't get to captain sides even against teams like Bangladesh in Test Matches. REMEMBER Kohli became the best captain in Tests for India, sure. But in ODIs, T20s? MSD was there as a guiding senior member for ODIs till 2019 and T20s till about 2017/18. You need players like Rohit and Kohli on the field because of their experience, not on the basis of skill. Young players should hone their skills and bank on the experience of Rohit and Kohli to write the new chapters of Indian Cricket.

    - Inexplicable drop of Ashwin at Brisbane. I could have understood if Washington was picked given his performance in 2020-21 at the Gabba, but why Jadeja?
    - Rana could have actually played this match. His height and bounce would have worked here
    Test 4
    - Blunder to play 2 spinners
    - Blunder for Rohit to open and disturb KL Rahul
    - Blunder to overbowl Bunrah. NKR bowled just 1 over in Australia's 2nd innings and Washington just 4 overs.

    - Blunder for Rohit to sit out while Kohli was playing. Both should have been dropped together as a package

It is very easy to win matches. With SENA countries welcoming with greener pitches, a score of 200-250 each innings would be more than enough. Given that if T20 players are selected and each of them contribute with 20-30 runs each, it’s easy to hold winning position.

I have no issue with either form, but the two are very different in terms of batting technique, shot selection, footwork, stance etc. As long as this continues, India’s test cricket performance will suffer

We have to break this dependence on allrounders ... we have survived at home because we had 4 players (4 matchwinners) in jaddu and ashwin [as a batter and a bowler]
We have to get to blooding new talent with 7 bats -- we have tostart scoring 350+ scores.

I wanted to share a thought regarding the structure of India's cricket representation on the international stage. Considering the vast talent pool and regional diversity in Indian cricket, could we explore the possibility of fielding two separate teams, such as a South India team and a North India team?
This idea is inspired by the approach of the United Kingdom, where England, Ireland, and Scotland participate as separate cricketing nations. It could provide several benefits, including greater opportunities for players, enhanced regional pride, and increased competitiveness.
However, I understand this concept may require careful consideration regarding its feasibility, alignment with ICC regulations, and the potential impact on the unity and identity of Indian cricket.

Not sure if it’s a silly idea or not. But I’ve always wondered why there isn’t more A cricket played worldwide. Particular nations like aus, England, and India, the depth is more than enough to have a rotating A squad. You could even have A squads take on each other and even nations like Ireland, Afghanistan etc in theory strengthening them but also giving the A guys exposure to a level above domestic cricket.

The issue lies solely with the top five batsmen, not the all-rounders or bowlers. To understand this, reflect on the era a decade ago when MS Dhoni was captain. Even when opponents posted massive scores of 600+ runs, India still managed to stay competitive. The driving force behind those comebacks was the brilliance of players like Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, and Dhoni’s leadership. The current predicament, therefore, squarely falls on the shoulders of the batsmen. Unless the top order consistently delivers runs, India's prospects remain bleak.

We do need players like starc and all rounder like cummins who can add 50 60 odd runs down the order. Currently our mindset shifts to defensive and submissive when tail enders come, but we need to improve their batting ability as well for extra benefits.

Lovely points Harsha. My 2 cents - BCCI should consider establishing cricket academies in key international locations where India tours. These academies could develop local talent into competitive teams to challenge our test players, fostering global cricketing standards and preserving the essence of test cricket. This approach, akin to playing golf on diverse courses against varied styles, celebrates challenges in sport and enriches the game. This is the only way forward for the Indian teams in the future.

Harsha sir, yesterday Sanjay Manjrekar in his Cricinfo show had suggested that Kohli & even Gill for that matter should play County cricket just before the England series and not the Ranji trophy. I think that's bang on because it's only in County cricket that they will get to adapt to playing the quicker seaming ball.
And he also said that the England series is starting late in June. There's a small window there, as small as it may be, but enough no. of matches left in the County season for one to prepare. Kohli & family will be shifting his residence to London as some reports suggested. Even if not, it's worth a try playing there for a good three or four 4 day matches. So there's the window there, if Sanjay is correct with the schedule of the County season. Hope Virat uses it.
And completely agree with you about what you said about 'A' tours. It has to come back. Especially for the sake of developing our new fast bowlers. It was evident that they lacked the first class experience, not in our spin friendly wickets in the Ranji trophy, but in SENA countries as you say. And for heaven's sake, somebody please tell the BCCI & the selectors to please please do not fast track fast bowlers into test matches and expect that someone among them will do wonders and the job then is made easy. No, it doesn't work like that. We need to develop their first class experience. Be it through 'A' tours or a full season of County. I think legends like Zaheer Khan & Javagal Srinath benefited so much from playing a season there if I'm not mistaken. So that's the route. Or as you so correctly say, proper 'A' tours round the year.
Always a delight listening to you, Sir. Enjoying your content on this channel and also in Cricbuzz with DK.

We always knew that batting would be a problem, considering we locked the same players again.
But the real issue which has surfaced is the bowling in this series.
As Harsha rightly pointed out, you cannot pick bowlers on their batting capabilities..we need genuine wicket taking bowlers.

T20 taught India that there was money in the short form, and every youngster coming up focused on that.
India forgot Gavaskar, Dev, Tendulkar, Dravid, Sehwag, and the long innings they all played.
India went for the sprint and forgot the marathon.
Until India remembers the type of cricket their absolute legends played, India will continue to go backwards at test level.

Av of 35 may be respectable when the opposition bowling is very strong, or the pitches favour bowlers, especially if the guy has good game sense, and digs in when the situation is tough. In the 24/25 BGT, the pitches favoured the seam bowlers strongly, in the first 20 overs of the new ball, especially the first 20 overs of the innings. In 10 innings (50%) 4 or more wickets fell in the first 20ov. The guys that got big scores came in when the seam died down, or survived until the seam died down and then cashed in. Top order of both sides struggled or were inconsistent.

I really think it's a proper transition period for the Indian cricket test team..and the way to move forward is to take a hard look and accept the shortcomings to work on that. Number 1, we need start getting more fast bowlers to play international test cricket. We keep talking about having a lot of options in the fast bowling department but without getting them to play more test cricket your are thrusting them in the cauldron of Australia and England without them settling down. Stop playing Bumrah and siraj in home conditions and groom in new fast bowlers for home seasons that way they will be prepared with international cricket overs in their bank to tackle SENA countries. 2. Go back to the drawing board grassroots and identify your spinners. This is going to be the biggest challenge with Ashwin gone. There are very few potential candidates to replace him and you will expect to see some test match losses in home conditions now as we have lost a great spinner with no succession plans. 3. Invest in batter that have decent defense technique (need not be rock solid) but can also score quickly. Scoring rates have increased in test cricket and you need batters to match that. You need to have a proper mix of batters. Every batter cannot be a risabh pant or even a KL Rahul. There needs to be a proper mix..4. Work on mental side of the game with them players that come in. Coaches of Indian team are not appointed to work on a players technical game. That should be done in the domestic level. They need to work on their situational awareness and mental aptitude

there was a time when HB was a top cricket commentator, when he was able to call games well, and was able to call a spade a spade with out blinking. Now a days his views as also affected by the same factors affecting Indian cricket.
Here is some data from Jan 1st 2020 (4+ years)
VK : Played 39 tests for 2028 runs @ 30.72 average. [HB thinks he had better numbers than rest]
    RS : Played 35 tests for 2160 runs @ 36. average.
SG: Played 32 tests, for 1893 runs at 35 average
KLR: Played 22 tests for 1251 runs at 32 average
I dont understand why any one would think any of them deserve a place in indian test cricket team (top 5 in batting order) for another day ? its ok for them to go to domestic for an year - 18 months and prove every one wrong, but until then why would any one keep these players in playing 11 ? is indian test cricket going through such a bad phase for 4 year that they arent able to find an able replacement for any of these 4 dudes ?
