An assistant manager of a supermarket in southern California can afford to live in a two story suburban home with a stay at home wife and two kids and drive an AMC Pacer, a new model economy car. This was definitely the mid-1970’s! Today a person with that same job can afford to support only themself and live in a nice apartment at best, especially in California. It’s now considered a menial job!

I sometimes wonder that when women entered the workforce if it didn't dilute the earnings of men. That and a much higher cost of living makes it harder to get by nowadays. Don't forget that the current generation blows money on the dumbest things.

@@stuartbear922 So true! I worked with two men in the late 1980s at Montgomery Ward’s that worked as stockers for about $6 there since the place opened in 1958 and they drove fairly new cars and lived in a small home built in the 1950’s. And yes, I would agree that people don’t manage their money very well today and buy a bunch of stupid stuff they don’t need and eat out too much

A terrific comedy that's all about believing no matter how hard it is
The so reminds me of Bruce Almighty.
But where that one had God give Jim Carrey his powers for a while here we have an old man telling someone to spread his word that he is the almighty creator. Out of all the people on earth this old guy chooses an convenience store assistant manager named Jerry. It takes some convincing but eventually this poor sap has to try to convince everyone else the man upstairs is real. The media frenzy is exactly what you'd expect. There's also fear of stepping on religious feet, people taking advantage of the situation, and being outright dismissed by the public. Even Jerry's children have to face teasing and ridicule.
The 70s jazz music is classy. The comedy is funny enough between Jerry and this old guy. John Denver actually reminds me of the late John Ritter with his voice, his reactions, and facial expressions.
Yes Jerry doesn't believe in god or isn't religious but God wants him to shake things up for the better. It's gonna take all of his strength, bravery, determination, and willing to risk everything to make sure the message is heard loud and clear Faith is a tricky thing these days and god wants humankind to help themselves, they don't have to pray all the time or ask for help. This shows we're capable of solving our own problems. Free will is ours alone so is permitting suffering violence killing etc. We are capable of our own miracles. All of us can make our own decisions to do what's right and if possible we can believe in ourselves even if not from the man upstairs.
This was something I could definitely get behind and have total faith. Denver and Burns really light up the screen with this premise. No particular religion is required because the message here is for all.
    Such a delight to watch!

There's more to life than people fighting over who is right and who is wrong about origin or purpose. When it comes right down to it, the cosmos didn't have to be as inconceivably large and complex as it is to humans. Nor did it ever have to provide the building blocks of life capable of suataining life. We observe, we theorize, we make claims, we separate and categorize all things different from other things. When we try to understand "space" we think of large portions of nothing-ness being contradicted by something-ness. God really is mysterious, God is also clever in that God would rather not impede upon his creations' desire to use free will. God would rather all of his creation look to him for the answers because he's the best primary source that could be hoped for. It's just that the collective stubbornness and desire to look solely to "How can I figure it out myself?" question is what drives people to look everywhere and anywhere, all places other than God. Yet, all the desire we have to pursue answers only leads to dead ends and self-induced suffering. God doesn't want that, humanity is addicted to its own ego. Humanity thinks it doesn't need God. When Nietzsche says, "God is dead", what he's really saying is that humanity would rather attempt to do what it can without pursuing something it cannot evidently prove with observations, experimentation, tests, and conclusions. God would rather not be confined to a test tube, or the limited ever changing definitions in the encyclopedia of definitions termed by man. Faith is foreign to many, but deep down its part of all who seek to devote themselves to following and pursuing it. Faith is firm, yet it can be fleeting too. Not being able to prove solidly the existence of something doesn't automatically make it false. Perception is relative, Objectivity is abstract and nearly impossible to describe. God is everything perfect and objective. Imperfect and subjective beings such as us cannot comprehend him no matter how much we try.
