When I saw a revival of Peter Pan on Broadway, Tinker Bell's death scene moved a toddler to call out so loudly the show stopped momentarily and then the theatre erupted with applause.

Oh, Merphy. I can feel your emotion and you trying to keep yourself together during this beautiful review and insight into your world, thank you. I’m estranged from my father, through his choosing, and so I identify with Peter when his parents closed the windows on him. When I read Peter Pan recently, for me it was about loss... and a stolen childhood. Even though he ‘chooses’ to stay in his childhood, in a way he doesn’t choose it, he is fixed in it. And we see this because he does have emotional intelligence, and that he does have parts of him that are grown up. But we see him purposely push boundaries and hold people afar. It’s painful x

Best way to end the year. Merphy discussing her fave book ever. I hope there will be tears.
I agree about the 'weird' sentences. Watching the Disney movie first wasn't the best idea. I mean, whenever Peter Pan was like, "Leave Hook to me so I can kill him" and then Wendy's siblings are like "O.K.!", I was just imagining it and.... As in, you come from a light hearted joke, and then Peter says something dark, and I just laugh out loud. Even the scene where Tinkerbell tries to murder Wendy...this book goes from 1 to 360 in a split second.

I grew up in a foster home. I was the strange case that move into a foster home at 10 and stayed until adulthood (and then a little beyond). To this day they are still my parents and my kids are their grand kids. The way that the Darlings accepted the lost boys remind me of my parents, who, just as they were preparing for an empty nest, upended their lives to take in this obnoxious, kinda messed up 10 year old and taught him how to be a man.

“Their windows were open for every kid.” Merphy.... YOU ARE WENDY! As topsy turvey as Peter Pan is... look at your own name! Turn “M” and “p” upside down, and you almost have the spelling of “Wendy.” No wonder this story resonates with you: you and your parents lived out the lives of the Darlings without even knowing it!

I’ve read Peter Pan twice over the past 15 years and I’m reading it for a 3rd time now. It’s always been my favorite book. The last chapter always has me in tears. It’s such a beautiful story with so much symbolism and adore the way it’s written. Absolute magic. It was a saving grace for me during a very depressing period of my teenage years. I was on medication and in therapy and related to the fears of adulthood and becoming a grownup. Peter Pan helped me dissect and process all the emotions of that time in my life in a way I’m forever grateful for. ❤ 🥹

I love Peter Pan! Tink sacrificing herself for Peter and the power of belief bringing her back is my favorite part! I got to be Tink in a stage production and that scene was very fun to act. So I am a Tink stan, but performing that scene made me think a lot about her motivations and it's deeper meaning with regards to Peter and Tink's relationship. Tink is so much like Peter in that she can be jealous and murderous one moment towards Wendy and self sacrificing the next for Peter because she knows he would do the same for her. Peter is very chivalrous, but here the female character gets to rescue him. They are the best of friends! And with Peter's mother issues you could say Tink has taken it upon herself to be his ultimate protector. All the other "Wendy's" in his life will grow up and eventually leave Peter just like his own mother did, but Tink's love for him is eternal. She is his family! Not to mention deeper questions the scene raises about the relation between belief and youth vs aging and cynicism. What must it be like for Tink to know her continued existence and that of all her people depends on the power of faith? Peter's belief in her it literally keeping her alive! It's beautiful! It was lovely to hear you talk about your favorite book! If you ever have a chance to see the ballet version of Peter Pan, I highly recommend it. It would also be great to hear you review any fantasy books that are a variation on Peter Pan like Straight on Til Morning from the Disney Twisted Tales series or Peter Pan Trilogy by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson.

This book hits you on the mother's love part, Merphy. But this book hits me so much at that scene in Marooner's Rock when he acts "fair" to Hook, when he keeps his purehearted fair soul to the fight. Then he was heartbroken then he forgets it. It hits me that growing up means to learn from hardships and heartbreak and because Peter always forgets things even forgets tragedies, he never grow up. This hit me so much and after THAT ending when out little Peter is left out, oh no, I'm hurt. I had a book hangover with this for a whole week when Peter keeps showing up in my head. Hooh nice work Merphy, love this video so much

Hey Merphy, that was amazing, I've never read the book, I've only ever watched the Disney cartoon and the Robin Williams film Hook, both of which were amazing, but you have given me a much deeper appreciation for Peter and the entire story, so thank you.
You mention that nobody wants to hear a deep dive on Peter's issues, but as a possible video idea for the future, I personally would love if you made deep dives on individual characters, examining their motivations, psychology, relationships etc. I'd be really interested in seeing that.

My parents were exactly like your parents we had lots of kids from other families in our home, mainly my brothers friends but it was really something when these kid grew up and my parents whom they referred to as their 2nd mom and dad, had invited my parents to their graduations, weddings, their own children's birthday parties, ect. It was really something that parents became like foster/adopted parents to them in their time of need and they never forgot it and continued to show appreciation for them, even they were grown with kids of their own. Even as adults they knew as long as my parents were alive they would always have a place to call home if they ever needed it.

My roommate got me Peter Pan sophomore year of college and I finally read it a year afterwards. I need to go back and reread it cause there was a lot I was confused on or didn’t hold my attention, but Peter Pan has always been a character and story I’ve loved. Mainly because of the Disney movie. I wanted to go to Neverland as a kid, fly around with Tinkerbell, and explore the island with Wendy and Peter. Peter and Robin Hood were always my two favorite fairy tale characters and I always love to hear renditions about their worlds.

I want to love Peter Pan, but my modern sensibilities can’t get past the use of “Piccaninnies” as the tribe name, even though I know that the use of the word as a racial slur for black child slaves was a North American thing, and that Barrie wrote this so long ago. But after watching this, I think I need to re-read it. I think I’ll see it differently. Thank you for that.

I read this book because you mentioned it multiple times on your channel on a bus ride to another city and I cried so hard. I also cried watching your video. This was truly a great review.

Peter pan is tied with lotr for my favorite book. I recently rediscovered it as an adult and the wit and wordplay were so creative and lovely. Especially the last line

I read this book after seeing a video of you mentioning it as one of your favorites this weekend. While I did not enjoy this book as much as you and others; I do see the points you made and why most would really enjoy this book.
    Your parents are amazing people!

Did not expect to start crying while watching this, but I guess I should have seen it coming. Loved hearing your thoughts about this book since I’ve heard you mention it so many times ❤️

Two scenes really stick with me to this day. The first is after Peter defeated Hook, and while everyone is asleep on the ship, Peter has a dream and is crying in his sleep while Wendy holds him. That is with her knowing she is leaving and he hasn't shown any sadness about it. The second is when he sits in Hooks cabin dressed as him, while holding his trident cigarette thing while making a hook with his free hand.
It's an incredibly wonderful story that I will read over and over again forever.

I am not a mother, but becoming one someday is one of the deepest desires of my heart. Adoption is incredibly close to me as well. I read this book as a young kid, every theme completely flying over my head. A reread and annotation is most certainly due. I wept along with you, Merphy, and I appreciate what you brought to this story through this review so, so much.❤️

First- way to make me cry. Being there for every kid- I feel that too. Every time I come across a youtuber with that love I immediately feel a connection. I knew I liked you for a reason. Second- this "rant" sounds like me when my friends let me go on about The Secret Garden. Including the crying, lol.
