- This is the Peter Pan musical broadcast on TV in 1960 with Mary Martin and Cyril Richard. It is a delightful musical.
Mary Martin got her first great role in a Cole Porter show dressed in almost nothing but a fur muff, singing My Heart Belongs to Daddy. She was also the original Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, and starred in many other Rogers and Hammerstein musicals..She was an actor, singer, and dancer. This musical was created in 1954 with Mary Martin to be the starring role.
Cyril Richard, from Australia was a stage, film, radio, and TV actor. He even was on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera playing the comic lead. He is best known for his role in Peter Pan as the sneering Captain Hook.
The available copies all had a problem which apparently was on the master tape. Some of the alternate scan lines would slip to the left in a few scenes. This was removed by frame editing. The original was deinterlaced carefully and noise reduced with frame editing to remove difficult spots.

I was in a Trance watching this now. So many memories attached to this version for me! I didn't even like the animated version I loved this one since I can remember! and still do! I can't even explain the weird nees da ja voo lol! WOW I'm 38 now and I think I was in 3d grade when I watched this!

I'm 75, and remember watching this live on our 19 inch TV when I was 12, when Life was so simple, all my loved ones were alive, all my dreams were in front of me and unrealized. Thanks for the memories, and grateful to still be alive now.
I am 73. I was seven when this was broadcast. My parents were amazed that our family in Michigan could watch and actual Broadway Musical. What a marvelous wonder this new invention was.

My Dad, Joe Puma, was one of the musicians in this production. Every time Tinkerbell "speaks" that his guitar. I was in the first of second grade in 1960. I remember us all watching it

I am reading comments of people who said they watched the 'tape' of this over and over. I am older and we had to wait a whole year t see it, as well as "The Wizard of Oz", but I have to tell you that I believe that made it 100 times more special for us. They were always the two most anticipated nights of the year.
Yes! The Wizard of Oz was worth the wait every year back in the early 70s. Even channel nine in Windsor Canada would show it. I’m from Detroit.
Yes!!! I'm a "millennial," but I remember getting this VHS for my 6th or 7th bday because I was obsessed with not just Disney, but Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. This was such a treasure!🥰 So thrilled to have came across this on RUclips- what a gift! I probably wore my VHS out, but my sis says it still works. I'd love to have a DVD copy just for a back up! Not much can beat times like these 🤗

Oh my gosh…I grew up too watching this over and over since it aired. I was 5 or 6…..73 now and I just got the urge to watch again. So happy I found on RUclips. I did get to see Peter Pan on stage with Cathy Rigby. Also fabulous. I think I was about 27 28. Such warm memories watching this. ❤️

I remember watching this VHS every single day as a kid!! My mother got to play Peter Pan in a big theater and I insisted Peter Pan was a boy, so she bought me this movie. I just adore this version!! It all comes back like I never stopped watching it!!
My mom played this movie for me many times when I was kid. I'm so happy it's on RUclips now. My mom would've loved this.
I think I remember my mom saying "I want to show you something. " And we watched this. One of my first experiences with musical theater too. It enraptured me. I don't know if my mom ever revisited this performance aside from that VHS. A shame she's no longer around in this world. I'd have showed it to her if she was. Thinking of you Mom.

wished it were available again. Thank you! I wrote a fan letter to Cyril Richard ( The father and Captain Hook) and he wrote back and sent me a signed photo as Captain Hook! Such a lovely gesture to a child fan.

Why, why, why?” As I explained to my dad, “That’s the original PWB speech!” (PWB stands for Poor White Boy). It’s a phrase my dad jokingly likes to use when he feels that my mom is demanding too much of him.

for my own playbill of the broadway musical peter pan i made seven lost boys named curly tootles cubby slightly nibs twin 1 and twin 2. and cubby and slightly are liza's adopted sons and curly tootles nibs and the twins are mr and mrs dlarling's adopted sons.
I was fortunate enough to grow up watching this on good ol' VCR. Productions like this are absolute gems.
This was my favorite version of Peter Pan as a kid, we still have it on VHS. Growing up I use to ask ‘can we watch Peter Pan with Nanay(grandmother) in it?’ Because Mary Martin looked like my great grandmother to me. I’m 25 years old now and I feel like a kid again lol.
Happy 63rd Anniversary of the TV showing. I remember watching this on TV. The date was Dec. 08, 1960, which was also my parents' anniversary. I found a copy on DVD, and just by chance, watched it on the 50th anniversary of the TV debut. It was also B and W, just as we saw it. We didn't get our first color TV in the household until the early 1970's
There was no excuse for marketing a B&W copy because it was on high quality laserdisc in 1990. The original broadcast was actually 1954, but it wasn't recorded on tape until 1960. It is possible that the DVD was copied from the 1954 or 1956 B&W kinescopes. While both showings were in color, video tape had not been marketed yet. The old kinescopes smeared the frames because the film was recorded at 24fps instead of the TV 60fps on B&W film from a monitor. It is now possible with advanced software to restore the old kinescope recordings to near broadcast quality, but in B&W. The 70th anniversary of the original broadcast will be 2024 (2024-1954=70).
The BEST version of Peter Pan. Have been enjoying it over 60 years. A Classic.

This is actually from a laserdisc version which essentially had video with broadcast quality. It is wonderful that it brings back good memories.

Yes! It was only aired once per year in the early sixties. I was 4 years old when I saw this on TV for the first time. I was enamored. I wanted to be Peter Pan. I think I was confused because Peter was played by a woman, so I thought I could be Peter. My aunt made me my own Peter Pan costume and I wore it all the time until it no longer fit, like for 2 years. My parents bought the LP soundtrack to the movie, so when they played it, which was, much to their aggravation, I flew everywhere in the house, hopping from chair to chair to sofa to chair jumping around. I really thought I was flying. Lol. I knew every word to every song. I'll never forget that period of my childhood. Even my mom and my aunt still remember my facination/ obsession with Peter Pan! Captain hook really freaked me out, though. He was so creepy and scary to a 4 year old.

I was just talking about how my Grandma and I would watch this when I was young and she would let me stay up late and eat tons of buttery / salty popcorn that she popped on the stove (it was the best) and drink sodas! Love this Peter Pan. About 18 years ago I took my daughter's and granddaughter to see Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan in Cleveland at the Play house. It was also beautiful.

I had this on vhs and watched it over and over as a child. I was born in 1986 but this really touched me, even though it was 26 years older. I always thought ( at the time) that Prince William & Harry were really John & Michael. Lol 😍
I watched this all the time when I was a child. I even watched it in my mid twenties and still enjoyed it but something about being almost 40 I cried and cried at so many points. The opening credits, Peter singing about Neverland before they leave, Peter's lullaby, and when the children start to sing Tender Shepard when they return, and finally when Peter tells Wendy she is too old to go with him. The whole story of Peter Pan has taken on a new meaning as I get older. Such stellar performances from the cast. This and Hook will always be my favorite Peter Pan performances.
It certainly has more emotion than the Disney version. One hopes that kids of this generation watch this version and can see the wonderful quality. Yes, some of it is dated with racial stereotypes such as the "indians", but it is in the style of children having fun. Cyril Richard was wonderful as the sneering Hook. He also played a similar comic role at the Met Opera in La Pericole, and his wonderful diction and comedy came over the radio broadcast very well.
@@clementj1 I agree with what you said, and goodness thank you for this upload Cyril is amazing! I was very scared of him as a child but his scenes and songs may be some of my favorites now and he embodies this character so well.
Oh how I miss doing live Theater. I used to watch this as a boy and loved it, I was always a huge Capt Hook fan especially his costumes lol. As an adult watching the actors and hearing them use of their voices and their projection is marvelous not to mention how they use their bodies with big bold movements to tell the story.
My mimi, grandma, had this recorded on VHS and I have so many memories of this film and it's so weird how I pictured this film in my head compared to watching it as an adult. I remember that each commercial break, because it was recorded from television, had a soup commercial and I've been trying to find the soup commercial for years. I just remember that they keep trying to share the soup or take soup from one person's bowl and put it in the other or something like that and I've been unable to find the commercial ever since.

Watching this as an adult I still love it, but the scene of Peter pretending to be a woman (very Victor/Victoria) with Captain Hook, it’s beyond odd.

Sooo I wanna start and say I have adhd meaning I don’t remember a lot especially when it comes to movies when I was a kid. I have no memory from before the age of 5 now that being said my bubbie ( grandma) showed me this movie for the first time when I was 4 or around there. As I grew older I forgot everything except the hand show that Mary Martin did in the darling kids room. I remembered that one scene my whole life not knowing what movie it’s from and looking for it for years. Finally I gave in and asked my bubbie if she had it. When she pulled out Peter Pan I instantly said “no that wasn’t it” in the end I decided to give it a watch and that watch changed everything.. I had found the movie I was looking for for years and I wasn’t disappointed I thought of the year it was released and realized it was incredible. This has been my favorite movie for years !! And every time I watch it I become a bigger fan of Mary Martin. I also wonder what she would think of what became of the movie if she would be pleased with the results. I know almost every single line in this movie and can’t help but talk along and sing along with it. I’ve watched it dozens of times and have a vhs tape that I used to watch it on before finding this video. Can you guess my age? Bet you can’t. Because the only people I talk to and know is about the movie are 30-40 at least !. When my old teacher gave us a assignment to make a presentation about a actor I instantly choose Mary Martin as I was eger to talk about her and the movie and because I knew a lot about her from the top of my head and had a good cool video if a interview. I got a A and was happy. For a few weeks I’ve been wanting to rewatch this movie for about the dozenth time. And finally able to. So did you guess my age ? I’m…….. 19 as of rn but almost 20 so I’m on the younger side of the generation but even to this movie changed my life. And I don’t care how old when I have kids or if they want to or not I’m gonna to show them this movie at least once and actually not show them the Disney one because this one is so much better.

Yes! When we kids our Aunt used to play this movie when we would visit. She knows every song by heart and she was always happy to share one of her favorite childhood movies with us. I think this is a nice classic musical adaption of this classic story :)

How Wonderful it is to see Mary Martin as Peter Pan. I actually saw this broadcast and each year, looked forward to seeing it again. On one of the last times that NBC broadcast it @ 1973, it had a "curtain call" with Ms Martin coming forward in costume to thank the home audience for watching and always believe in the magic. It is now long gone BUT can be seen in the 1956 version in b/w, a kinescope that survived. But, I am happy to see it again...Thank you for posting and bringing out the child in all of us when we watch this classic again.

I love the memories this brings up. Watching it 30 years later made me a kid all over again. I always had a huge crush on Tiger Lily. Watching it years later, I notice little things. like how bad the younger lost boys are at their choreography. But I also notice the absolute love in Mary Martin's eyes when she performs with these children. I'd bet she was the best cast mom ever. Her performance is flawless. i've seen this with Sandy Duncan and Kathy Rigby and while they each brought something wonderful to the performance, no one can match the joy that Mary brought
The mistakes in choreography show that it was filmed almost live and can add to the charm.

I saw Mary Martin do Peter Pan with the Ice Capades in Corpus Christie, Texas in 1955 when I was six. The show brought the house down.

I'll never forget when I was a child. Grandma asked what movie we wanted her to buy for us for Christmas. We requested Peter Pan, because Disney's Peter Pan was one of my favorite movies.

Watched this over and over as a kid.
I worked as a stage tech when the company I apprenticed for did this play during the 1990-1991 season. We used the same Foy flying system and brought in Robert Foy(?) to teach the techs how to operate the system. Mary Martin would only trust one person to "fly" her and it was THIS Foy. The first few dress rehearsals were rough. One time, Wendy flew right into the bedroom wall. You could hear EVERYONE in the theater go "Holy Shit!". Wendy was shaken up but OK. At 09:33, this was when Peter fly into the room, landed, and posed. We sometimes did a full dress rehearsal where kids from the schools got to watch for free. Well, when Peter landed and posed, the audience applauded for 1 minute. Totally unexpected and a WOW moment for sure.
My favourite thing of all time as a kid. Now that I've seen Finding Neverland the story of why JM Barrie wrote Peter Pan.

A friend gave this to us on VHS when I was little. I haven't seen it in years, but will sometimes randomly start humming some of the songs. I loved getting to watch it again.

I had a VHS recording of this in black and white that I watched several times growing up. It was and still is my favorite Peter Pan musical. Seeing it in color is so neat!! I never thought much about it being in black and white, but now it's just like wow!

It's been yrs since I've seen this, I'm 65 yrs old now & watching it on RUclips brought back a flood of memories. The best version of Peter Pan I've seen in my yrs. Mary Martin was spectacular in this role
The Peter Pan I grew up on before the 2003 Peter Pan lol watched this tape over and over. My sister and I would do the puppet show in the middle of the night all the time 😂
My childhood right here as well!!! I still get chills watching this. I was watching this when I was 6 years old and my mother literally said,"Peter Pan is Larry Hagman's mother!" God Bless and R.I.P. to both Mary Martin and Larry Hagman!!

There are quite a few movies and TV shows from my childhood that I remember fondly and that still hold up for me as an adult. In fact, in some ways I have an even greater appreciation for them now than I did then. An example is the 1965 Cinderella, which I watched when it first aired and rediscovered several years ago on RUclips. I loved the songs, performances, and story so much that I bought the DVD.
I'm old enough to have seen this on its initial broadcast in 1960. I only remembered two things from it: The youngest boy flying out the window on his way to Neverland, and Mary Martin urging the audience to revive Tinkerbell by clapping. Five year old me clapped.
I decided just yesterday to give it another go, much as I did with Cinderella four years ago. It left me totally flat. There's just no "there there". Not a single song is memorable (in contrast, I remembered two songs from Cinderella a whopping 55 years after seeing it). That's the kiss of death for a musical. The story doesn't interest me. Being a pirate or an Indian never captured my imagination, I was FAR too young to worry about growing up, and I'm far too old and have experienced too many adult pleasures to think it's good to remain a boy. That leaves NOTHING to hook me.
I also can't get over the fact that this pre-pubescent boy is played by a 47 year old woman. WTH? It's glaringly obvious. Mary Martin played it with enthusiasm, but it left me thinking "so what? It's a woman." It was also obvious that Wendy, who is supposed to be around 12 or 13, was played by a woman in her 20s.
A big disappointment.
I had the VHS too. What a wonderfully old memory!

I had this on a bootleg VHS that immediately played The Black Cauldron after Peter Pan. also the shadow eating the hand at 15:00 is ingrained in my brain
