  • Perhaps the easiest way to know whether you've "set the bevel" on your straight razor or not is to simply observe the manner of water interacting with the razor on the whetstone).
If you begin with a razor that you'd gently intentionally dulled upon glass (to the point that it wholly ignores arm hair) and work the razor across your hone until the water scoops up on to the razor's concavity easily and uniformly in both directions on the hone, it is time for you to test that razor to your arm hair; if likely cuts the hair easily at any point on the razor edge when put flush to the taut skin, and thus is ready for the further refinements of finer stones.

    Thanks for sharing this video.
I've found somewhere on coticule.be you've had to deal with both La Verte and La Grise layers. I have one exemplar at home and have a hard time to tell which one of those both layers it is. Can you tel what are the differences between the La Grise and La Verte or are there some unique indications I can use to separate them?
    Thanks in advance

Verte usually have a greenish hue that Grise wouldn't have, in the strata basis itself (many Grises have thin green lines running about, but the base color will be greyer than Verte's).

Hey Jarrod! Crestview Brian. Your You Tube channel is getting really good. I'll be in Jax a couple times in the spring. I will make sure I swing by your shop and check it out.

The angle you described at the start is obtuse😂

    • @thesuperiorshave

obtuse means "of an angle exceeding 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees", among other definitions

do you generally have issues with boker razors?
just wondering because I've never had one, but wanted either an elite or edelweiss. waste of money?

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  7 лет назад +3

yes, they have issues, for us sending razors that while beautifully ground have nothing close to a shaving edge, they have a pretty narrow obtuse bevel (made from spine off of honing planes??) rather than 'ugly' wider/acute planes that actually do what they're supposed to.
No more than Thiers-Issard. They can still obviously both make a tremendous razor when they wish.
An Edelweiss in bone handle if you can find is well worth getting, just be aware bones are never so tightly pinned (they'll crack), only barely tight enough to hold at the normal opening position, and likely if you get one unhoned post-factory it will need serious honing work. When we had those they were very dull.
The faux-ivory, however, when we've had have all truly been ready for shaving...so maybe different ppl work on different models.

makes sense. I guess I'll stick with dovo, and stark.
BTW, I absolutely love the jerry stark I bought from you last year.
I'm probably going to stop in again soon for another blade and coti very soon.

      thanks, happy you're happy
don't discount the "Premium Qualität" NTS-Solingens, they've only the one style but in terms of polish uniformity, deg. of hollowness, flatness, and straight edge line I have not personally seen better modern 5/8" str8zrs

very interesting vid thanks . weird habit rolling on the spine, what if engraved or not even?

What's so weird about it when they all do it in Solingen and (I presume) most do on a strop? The takeoff and landing are where the most wear occurs, I think.
Engraved spines are a concession of geometric practicalities in favor of vanity, and if we have an engraved spine that needs to be preserved, obviously one cannot hone with the razor flush to the stone for very long(this is exactly why we eschewed gold plate from the Dovo 'Bergischer Löwe' for our customized 'Sunday Shaver'). I suppose you must "take off and land" with each half of a lap at the very least.

are you serious or what you can not hone a razor ...you can not even hold it probably....and you dont have the feel to it .....thats why it takes you so long ..... iam a barbar and in a salon you be out the door....

You have beautiful prose, Vincent. It is a privilege to read your missive, as your esteemed syntax is nearly aloud in my head.
I'm certain in the micro-universe of your local 'barbar' {sic} shop your reputation is as well earned as someone who has personally honed and sold over 20,000 Solingen-produced straight razors since 2009 and become the USA's authorized service agent for the world's largest straight razor producer.
All the best to you, fine sir!
