I used to love these when I was a kid. But as an adult, I noticed something about them: they're based on children's novels, almost none of which are read today. There are thousands of young adult novels written by Kin Platt, Fran Arick, Paul Zindel, Judy Blume, and others, half of which are forgotten. Then again, how can you blame today's kids for not wanting to read this stuff. They don't have to wait while their teenage sister hogs the phone, they don't have to have quarters for the payphone, no renting videos from the local video store, no fax machines anymore, no writing letters to your friend in another state and waiting for a reply, and mom doesn't tell her son, "No, you can't try on your sister dresses."
I was a child and teen of the 70's. I remember watching these as well and reading those books too. They made 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret' this year and I watched the movie with my 11 year old. She loved the movie. I was at first hesitant to watch the movie because I heard it was terrible and everybody was trashing it.
