    Is it ok to write about where you live/grew up and how it impacted you and the community around you? I live in Northern Ireland and a lot of my essay is going to be about my upbringing in the warzone and how my community is divided, is this strong to write about?

    I'm writing about a time when I was at a folk festival with my family, there was a gas leak, and as everyone was running away from the festival, I overcame my regular anxiety so that I could find my family and get us out of there. Is this good? It doesn't have much to do with my academics but I think it's one of my better stories and (maybe?) shows a bit about who I am.

    I wrote about my generalized anxiety and how covid exacerbated my condition. This was for my covid specific additional information essay. I have begun to learn how to manage it better and made sure to clarify that in the tail end of the essay. Does that clarify that it is not an overbearing weakness or does it sound like I am just showing vulnerability for the sake of vulnerability?

    Other things to avoid:
    1. Exaggerations. (Or worse, lies.)
    No, that 3 day trip to the two-thirds world or that 2 week summer class did not change your life.
    And certainly don't fabricate stuff for college admissions. If your grandma didn't suffer for 30 years from carcinoma and that inspired you to head towards a biomedical engineering program to keep your options open for med school and research work, don't make it up.
    2. Topics that bore you.
    3. Similarly, topics that you THINK you should write about because they are the popular buzzwords/buzzphrases but you don't really care about.
    For instance, I interview for MIT, and I had one applicant say that he thought space exploration was "highly important to him." (He wanted to major in CS, not Aero/Astro.)
    All I have to do as an interviewer is ask you some pointed questions how you have explored these topics and if it's nothing, you better believe that will be pointed out in my report. (In other words, if you think space exploration is important, what have you investigated on your own? What have you done about it?)
    Or maybe your cause du jour is income inequality or whatever other cause. Fine -- what have you done about it? Have you done any research? etc.

  • @june3577

    After finishing my common app essay, I realized that it dealt with two prompts (#1 and #2) but didn’t completely cover everything asked of me in either prompt. Should I select the prompt that it relates to most or should I select the last prompt that is an essay of your choice? Will I be penalized for not answering a specific prompt or will it be fine because, although I’m selecting the prompt of an essay of my choosing, my essay is about different portions of the above prompts?

    • @dice6085
      @dice6085 2 года назад +5

      Personally I’ve been told to not worry about the prompts for the general common app essay. I’ve read so many things that said you’re even better off never looking at them. If you can’t decide you can always just pick the last “make your own prompt” prompt

    Is incorporating vacations into my essay showing privilege?

    • @JustAnotherLokiStan
      @JustAnotherLokiStan 2 года назад +8

      If it's a kind of vacation that only super duper rich people can go on, then try to avoid it. Otherwise it's mostly fine. If there's a specific incident that happened when you were on vacation and if that's what you're writing about, my advice would be to focus on that specific incident and gloss over the vacation part. If the main topic itself IS the vacation and you're writing something about 1) how it opened your mind to the diversity in the world 2) how it changed your views on how poor people live or smth, DON'T write it. (I'm just mentioning two of the most common vacation essays that people write.) Just avoid sounding like you're too full of yourself and you'll be fine.

      I know most people will say yes, write about it, because that's you. And I am not against the fact that you are gay but keep in mind, you don't know who is going to read your essay. You can write about being gay though but don't make it seem like a conflict between straight and gay people
