Mid 70's, my friend had an extra ticket to a concert, so I agreed to go. Our ride showed up, a genuine hippie van with the entire inside lined with shag carpeting, bean bags chairs for seats in the back. Rode 40 miles trying to sit in those stupid bean bags to McCormic Place, Arie Crown Theater in Chicago, parked in the underground parking. We sat in the 1st row in the balcony, lights went down, curtain went up, it was Rare Earth. Looked down below, glows of joints all over the place, beer can tabs poping, ushers running around with flashlights trying to catch people, it was hilarious. The group I was with had their share of smoke and drink, and when we left, no one could remember where the van was parked. Wandered around for 45 min before we found it. Rode back home trying to sit/lay in those stupid bean bag chairs. Great concert.

I'm an atheist and I love Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky". When they sing "I've got a friend in Jesus" I wave my hands in the air, Southern Baptist style, and feel the "spirit" of the song, even though I don't believe in those fairy tales.
Debbie Dean was the first white act signed to Motown Records, or a subsidy of Motown. Nick and the Jaguars were actually the first the first white act to record on Motown records, but Rare Earth was the first profitable white act on Motown Records. I'm glad you played this because a lot of people thought Teena Marie was Motown's only white singer!
Jamel, man !!! Every Single time i see you my spirits get lifted to another level !!! Every Single Time !!! I Just Want to CELEBRATE YOU, brother Jamel !!! You’re the BEST of All that is good !!
Just thinking of the death of Carl Reiner.. He said a few years back that if he got up in the morning and his name wasn't in the obits then it was a good day. Celebrate another day of living - good philosophy to have.
J-Dog, I saw *Rare Earth* in the 1980's in a bar with maybe 40 other people. I'm from Charlotte NC, you see, and I guess nobody was smart enough to go. (I saw Pat Travers in an even *shittier* bar the very same year, there were maybe 80 people at *that* show!) My roommates and I knew Rare Earth would be epic so we took LSD. That night, I saw one of the top 5 shows of my entire life. The saxophone player plugged into a wah-wah pedal, and during Celebrate he played a 10 minute solo that blew the top of my head off. I'll never forget it.
Not the only one that thought this was a black band, but gotta love the funky sound. Very uplifting song. Never saw you that much into a song before. Ready to go out to the bar and do some dancing! Reminds me of Sly and the Fam Stone songs.

Rare Earth was a Detroit bar band (Sunliners) that got Mowtown's attention. Recorded a bunch at Hitsville. The record label was named after them, but in reality was Motown's "white" label. It was a great way for Berry to generate more from his stock crew.

Sounds like Sly Stone. Black is Beautiful was such a strong movement. Black and whites united against the the senseless Vietnam war. Hopeful times. Funky!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Jamel - that picked up my spirits on this hot day. Another wonderful song along these lines is the Allman Brothers Band's song, "Revival"
I'm an atheist, and this song makes me jump up and shout, "Praise Jesus!" I mean that in a good way.
I'm an atheist and I love Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky". When they sing "I've got a friend in Jesus" I wave my hands in the air, Southern Baptist style, and feel the "spirit" of the song, even though I don't believe in those fairy tales.
Atheists don't have to be confrontational extremists. It's good that people can have faith in something positive, even if I don't subscribe to it.
@@NefariousKoel To be fair, the vast majority of atheists are not confrontational extremists. It's just that those who are, are very noisy.
This song was covered by Christian singer Kim Boyce . The message is relevant to believers and non believers.
I’ve heard this song many times and am just now learning who the band was to sang this song. Another Awesome Vid Jamal!
(I saw Pat Travers in an even *shittier* bar the very same year, there were maybe 80 people at *that* show!)
My roommates and I knew Rare Earth would be epic so we took LSD. That night, I saw one of the top 5 shows of my entire life.
The saxophone player plugged into a wah-wah pedal, and during Celebrate he played a 10 minute solo that blew the top of my head off. I'll never forget it.
Rare Earth live performance of “I Just Want To Celebrate”
Yes yes yes!!!!!!I mentioned that in my comment. The live album is fantastic and grossly underated!!!!
Live at the California jam
Not the only one that thought this was a black band, but gotta love the funky sound. Very uplifting song. Never saw you that much into a song before. Ready to go out to the bar and do some dancing! Reminds me of Sly and the Fam Stone songs.
Dude, great reaction! The wig gives you a Samuel L. Jackson iN Pulp Fiction kinda look!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏾
@@jamelakajamal I think you have the market cornered on the true reaction vlogs! I really enjoy the vids. I hope you keep it up and that they stop blocking them. Peace and my best to you and yours! Happy 4th of July!
It was some very crazy times, but I feel so blessed to have been a teenager when this great music was blowing up the radio stations and MY record player! I saw Rare Earth, WAR and Bad Company in the same concert in '73. Love your honest first time reactions. It's a JOY to watch you. Love you! tytytytyty
They also did a cover of "Smiling Faces" on the album "Ma".
Memories of being 9 years old and my uncle’s juke box on the wraparound screen porch at the lake cottage blasting this and other great tunes of the day so we could hear it on the beach. This was my favorite! Still so good. Love that wig lol!
love 70s music, a lot of variety, great singers great musicians. Now all of the songs are about booty calls and autotuned. That's why I keep listening to the songs I grew up with. Hey how about doing one hit wonders? Wild Cherry I'm sure you heard the song Play that funky music white boy? that was their only hit. So if you find other one hit wonders to react to
You remind me of me back in the 70”s. I graduated in 1974 and had an Afro just like that.👍I would stick the pick in my fro and listen and jive to this music the best I could.👊🏻✌️
Jamel, you know better than anyone, good music doesn't have a color.
Love this song! "Put my faith in the people, but the people let me down/so I turn the other way and carry on anyhow" is how life rolls. Thanks!
They were a .Motown influenced like the band MC5 The J Giles Band of course they put their own little twist on it
not just motown influenced... but a Motown act
I Believe I Musta,,,,,👍😎
Rare Earth was a Detroit bar band (Sunliners) that got Mowtown's attention.
Recorded a bunch at Hitsville.
The record label was named after them, but in reality was Motown's "white" label.
It was a great way for Berry to generate more from his stock crew.
