Thanks man, this really helped. Something to note, you can convert the file into EPS, even though it's an EPS itself. The converted EPS opens on Illustrator and keeps all the layers intact.

Thanks. Didn't realise the embed was a possibility. I used to do a long winded method which never game me exact results. I would always go to drop it into photoshop, fill it with black and then rasterize that. Then get a marquee over the logo, copy that drop it in illustrator and use the live trace. Then expand and then colour it in. - And that method never got me to a 100% duplicate since it will still be a little edgy on the sides. Your method is so much more simpler xD

Thaaaaaannnk you so much. A client sent me a logo for use in video that was like 100x100 and was a CC file, while I still only have CS6. Worked perfectly so I could re-size it.
You can also open it in InDesign, place the file, then export it as a PDF and then open it in Illustrator. It works fine. Illustrator should be capable of doing this! ;-)

this is an older video but I did have a question. I have a layered file that is in a newer version of my AI, I want to maintain the layers when I open it and I have not figured out the fix, any suggestions
A triumph! Though I suspect the colour profile is obliterated in this process. Opening those unopenable .eps files in Photoshop, however, might preserve such so that you can grab the intended colours and adjust the newly openable .ai or .eps to the correct colours.
None of these methods didn't work for me unfortunately. I have an old .eps and error message is "file is an unknown format and cannot be opened". Many thanks

old school way... drop any ai or eps in acrobat, acrobat will turn it into a pdf which can be opened in illustrator (faster if you have a ton of files to do)
I tried, and both techniques worked, but the result showed some lines in the art that I could not get rid of. I even tried to open in an older version of AI. (I am running CS6) :(
This is perfect if you don't care about CC.
