it's one the first moves you learn as a drummer, either because the stick broke or you dropped it. Since it's such common problem for people who just started (either because they hit too hard in the wrong place or with the wrong technique and stick inclination) you learn the movement very early on. Every drummer has extra sticks attached to the kit just in case ;)
