Ariana Grande is a talented mimic. She does dead on verbal impressions of other celebrities, so she's certainly really good at memorizing sounds. So maybe she started with mimicry and memorization but built on top of that to learn Japanese.

Japanese is commonly taught in both Australian and NZ high schools.
In my school in NZ, Japanese lessons were mandatory for 6 months in the first year of high school. We only learn very basic stuff, culture and some hirogana
Japan was a major pacific economic power, and we do lots of business with Japan. Japan is a popular place for travel too.

Australia is close to Japan and in the 80s and 90s there was a lot of Japanese investment in Australia. Japanese and French are the most commonly taught languages in Australia. だから日本語が話せる人が多いです。

Japanese became popular as a subject in the early 1990s in Australia, and then in the late 90s, it overtook French as the newest foreign language to learn. Depending on the school and teacher, Japanese taught at school is mostly about the culture and basic things like numbers and greetings. In Australia, a foreign language is mandatory in the 7th grade for one year, or six months in the 7th grade and six months in the 8th grade, it depends on the school and schools will only get whatever teachers they can get from any language group.

I'm Australian and learnt some Japanese in primary school and high school. I'm 32 now so I don't remember much of it, just a few words, sentences and I can remember what about half of the hiragana looked like. Many schools here have Japanese as the L.O.T.E subject. I think it has something to do with business between Australia and Japan. In high school every year we would have Japanese exchange students that would stay for about 2 or 3 months.

1:15 I'm from Melbourne, Australia and I'm not sure why either. For me it was mandatory from grade 3 to 6 then a choice was given to continue learning it or study Italian instead in highschool. I assumed it was because we were closer to Japan than many other first world countries because Japanese tourism or immigration isn't that high in my experience compared to other Asian countries such as Vietnam, India and the Philippines. We also had "sister schools" in Japan where students from both schools would travel to the others country for a week or so to live in a native students house whose family would volunteer to accommodate them so the students could experience the different culture. A cool program for giving children life long experiences and education on foreign culture. I still remember kids circling around the Japanese students like paparazzi wanting to get to know them and become friends. I was still nervous going on 3 day long school camping trips let alone foreign countries though... brave kids 😅

Australians learn a lot of asian languages because every country around them are asian ;). They are very far from europe and north america! So I assume they must learn a lot of Chinese, Thai and Japanese!

      Good evening.
Good eve... oh my God you speak Japanese!
      Are you doing well?
      Oh!
How do you speak so well!
I don't understand or know (He didn't seem confident speaking this line, it's sort of hacky.)
      You are speaking very well!
      Oh, thank you so kindly!
Oh my God this is so crazy, what's going on?
      Please
I don't know, how do you do?
      How do you do!
      Pleased to meet you
Please tell me why you speak Japanese
      Because, my Wife is Japanese
      Is that so?
      Yes
Well, you are already speaking it aren't you?
      Excuse me?
Oh, your Japanese is very good you know
      Oh, thank you so kindly!

      Understands so well!

      Please wait a moment
      That's insane!
      Is it insane?
      No I'm like...

Aussie here, so in the late 90s to early 2000s we had German & Japanese classes in high school(year 7 for 1 to 2 terms). Reason being at the time Germany & Japanese were the biggest trading partners hence it was quite common for Japanese to be taught. Margot would be the same generation as I growing up in the 90s and 2000s so that would explain why
