Likely locking is xl was a balance move. If the chassis ends up underperforming in the data they compile during the next few months one of the 3 unreleased versions will probably have a standard or light engine.
That would be nice, but I don't believe PGI has gone against Battletech building rules for Omnis, meaning the engine/structure/armor type combo will most likely remain static. All we can hope for is they add more advanced machines like the Avatar, or the Omnimech BlackJacks or Firestarters.
I think the CT should be what is responsible for carrying engine type on IS Omnimechs. And then it would be nice if different variants had different engine sizes and types. Then you might want to buy the different variants. Also, the Hauptmann might come out now, and that has a standard engine!
I have been torn deciding to buy the Black Hawk or not. The reviews have been a mixed bag of crazy cats, but you said it can be a lot of fun to play, which decided me on all of my purchased mechs. If it's not fun, I'm not gonna play it. I saved posting this since my above just to test it out. You definitely have to play with a brawlers mindset of picking your targets before closing in, but yeah... I die more than I live, but it is a lot of fun to play, not easy, but definitely fun!
I don't think the XL is a real downside anyway. I would never not run an XL engine in what is essentially a medium mech or below. You just can't bring enough firepower to be a threat without them.
