Hi guys, I'm on the road for a business trip in the past 2 months, thus the slow updates. I had to use a friend's kitchen for this episode so please excuse me for less than optimal production quality. Also, don't forget to take advantage of the shortform promotion. Shortform is my favourite book summary app out there on the market. That is the thing. Many people "oversimplify" it like you said. If it were that simple procrastination would not be so common. Procrastination goes on a deeper level and it can be several things such as overwhelm, fear, lack of clarity, organisation, boredom, lack of skill, too large of a task etc. Also you need to practice things which is not always so simple either. Great video. Thankyou
I saved the video. I plan to watch it and others at a later time… JK 😃 I’m an engineer. So planning is an appealing pursuit and you have to recognize when to finish. I find comfort in planning, but stress in completion. If you don’t control your finished product, you will never feel resolution. I have to make myself reach a completion point.
The issue I have with this kind of questions (from that "game" you created) is that, being a 47 year old person that has struggled my whole life with this type of issues, I've created a lot of strategies or habits or things that mask a lot of these things you ask. So, for instance, the question about emotional stability seen by others, I basically practiced a lot to not be as emotional and especially for my emotional state to not be as visible as it once was. That doesn't mean I'm not emotional unstable or that I am. And doesn't mean that by improving my outside emotional state, I don't yet have a very unstable one on the inside. This was just an example. There's several others regarding the other questions. I'm not saying this questionnaire is not useful. I'm just saying that, from my experience, they always feel incomplete to someone like me. I could say the same about the ADHD tests I've seen. I'm also not sure how I would improve it in this regard to be honest.
I completely get it. And thanks for pointing it out. Let me answer that by two parts. First Let me start by saying I also had doubts about how "pretending to be someone else" can solve my personality problem. The concept "implementation intention", a technique originated by a researcher Peter Gollwitzer is a few decade old and had solid study data to back it up. However, the problem is - pretending to be someone different is TOUGH, just like you said, It often feels superficial, it also makes you feel pretentious and disingenuous, making you question if any real change occurred. At least it happens to me. Second, this is the part I really want to share with you, just as what you shared with me (I thank you for the honesty). 2 months into this exercise, someone unexpectedly called me the tidiest person they knew. In my mind, I was anything but, I was just pretending... But this is where I realized what defined me as a person was the sum of my actions, not who I believe myself to be. I get it, it's frustrating to put on a mask sometimes, But in many other people's eyes, small, consistent steps are what truly build character. And when enough people started to believe you to be ... for example emotional stable, it's a lot easier to convince yourself that you've changed. I can't say I've gone through the same struggles you have, but I believe I understand your point. From my own experience, I hope to convince you of one thing: this is a process. For some, it takes two months; for others, it might take two years. But mapping out all those small, right actions that nudge you to change bit by bit... that itself has value. I hope you keep at it, and I wish you all the best!
