I went to school with her, I’m a year above and that marriage was not supposed to happen.
She was young and got swept up, her family is wealthy, her dad Marty is an attorney (retired) who worked with my dad in toledo and the Tim Cruise thing WAS set up by their agents. She was to accompany him on a press tour in Italy and Tom wooed her, she went in with the notion they were discussing upcoming projects.
Allegedly, what we heard was that he had a roster of young up and coming actresses and he ticked them off until landing on Katie.
She is a GOOD sport and all through school she was well behaved and quiet, she ran track and focused on studies. Her character is solid, her family is solid. What I think happened is he came in and blew her away with an illusion of romance.
She dated Chris Klein prior and they would come home and hang out like regular folks, when Tom hit she evaporated...it was creepy, it was not her. She would come home with “escorts” and couldn’t speak freely but her family knew things were jacked. I won’t address specifics but Tom knew she was close to her sisters, brother and parents, he appeased her by buying a gorgeous home in Ottawa Hills (enclave within toledo) and had it totally redone, stocked with motorcycles and food, he’d been dangling that but never once did they come!! I believe she developed a sort of Stockholm syndrome, he truly sucked her in and at first she took it lightly and after getting married I think she realized what she was in but it was too late, he never let her be alone. She fell out of contact with everyone who knew her.
This was an average girl, trust me, when she was studying at Margaret O’Brian’s modeling/acting school her folks forked over a few grand to get her the Ang Lee audition for the ice storm...ahah she was cast all of Notre Dame was confused, bear in mind there were no less than thirty Katie/Kate/Katherines and she was the LAST people could envision as famous. She was quiet, she ran track and she had a run of the mill eating disorder. She was not a head turner, she was just another girl in a plaid skirt, quiet, studious and sweet.
Hollywood came and who wouldn’t want a shot? She did the Ice Storm and boom, Dawson’s Creek followed. Truly I think she was happy being at her level of fame, I saw her at Media Play on Monroe Street buying box sets of Dawson’s Creek and I said WHY?? Don’t you get them free???
“I don’t want to abuse the privilege” and she was getting them to sign for her parents.
That’s not a gold digger. I saw her a year ago at my bank in Perrysburg, I heard she was building a home on the Maumee River right down the street, I haven’t seen her at all since.
We aren’t friends we are acquaintances but I come from the same sphere and I swear she’s a solidly decent person and that relationship was nothing short of textbook mentally abusive.
I don’t normally say anything about knowing her but I don’t like seeing her bashed.
She’s truly just a regular person. I wish that one day she speaks publicly on Scientology but I doubt it, I personally think that getting out of that marriage came with the caveat of silence on the subject.

Their entire marriage was set up by Scientology and her father helped it happen as corroborated by multiple ex-scientologists.. She had money but she wanted more and she wanted the fame.

They all have problems such as depression, dyslexia, alcohol problems and others and scientology uses those problems to lure them in. Nobody joins it to get rich.

@@tomschmitz5745 There are lots of famous artists who refused to pay child support or paid only a scant amount. Famous example is John Lennon. He didn't pay a single dime to support his son Julian. Cruise could have done the same but he didn't.

While I certainly did not feel like an adult in my later 20s, I was not growing up anymore. Katie was in a marriage not only with Tom Cruise but with people watching her every move. I don’t know what happened in her home and YOU don’t know what happened in her home. Were you there?
