Spot on. I have shot bees for around 20 years and have many thousands of images. I have never been stung or even annoyed by the bees. I also try to find an attractive plant that the insects enjoy and stand next to it (Or even sit). As you say it is possible without flash but I find it so much easier to use a flash, so I use one all the time these days. Great stuff.
