U lucky dog u !!!! I sincerely hope it is everything you thought it would be in so much more !!!! I promise you if you stay the course, you will be blown away. Not just the views but the whole entire experience !!! From one moment to the next. Is it your first long trail ?? R u going to vlog it ??
Camp shoes for the win! We will be taking our OOFOS originals with us, always take the camp shoes on our adventures. Nothing better than getting into camp, taking off your shoes and letting your feet breath.
I really enjoy your videos, I only live about 70-80 miles from the PCT in Oregon and as much as I would love to hike it, somewhere along the way I got too old, this is why I enjoy RUclips as I can sit back and pretend I’m there too. Thank a You...
What a beautiful video and so calming. Having just come back from the Grand Canyon I had to smile at the wildlife reference as the elk would walk through my camp every evening (and morning) :) Thank you again for sharing!
Thank you Mary! I think this shows the importance of a routine for long-term trail success by building in time to take care of the chores and to take care of yourself. Great video--so well done and soothing to watch. Makes it look like anyone can do it :)
Thanks for this video, Mary. I think it's particularly valuable to show that you had a stretching routine every evening. I am finding as I get a bit older (and I certainly am a bit older than you), that stretching out my muscles is much more crucial than it used to be. I am definitely incorporating it into my hiking and backpacking recovery strategy, both while I am hiking and even at home as I try to stay in some kind of decent shape.
Thank you so much John. Yes I found it crucial to stretch. After for hiking for about 30mins on a morning I did some gentle stretches then too as well as when I stopped for lunch!
Thank you Mary! Fun to watch this for many who are preparing for the trail! Great work!! Derek! Your so funny!! Feet that are not washed daily can grow mushrooms I think! Good job caring for feet! It helped loads I’m sure!
Mary Mansfield No you wouldn’t.. Lol😁. For many hikers there is a doable level of hygiene that makes the trail more enjoyable. Recovery through stretching and rolling leg muscles is very important!😊
Could you say something more about the you pump air sack? A review? I am ignorant about that but love the idea. I had several month long high mountain - on glacier trips where the humidity from my breath would freeze and accumulate night-after-night, and become a real problem by the end of the trip. Blessings and thanks for an other gentle and informative video.
Hey you guys look Mary's back on the trail hooray !!!! What do you mean it's just old video stuff !!!lol. U must be a very structured and principled person Mary !! The stretching is very important especially as you get older !!! Sometimes it's hard for me to get going unless I do some stretches. And then comes that wonderful sensation of slipping on the pack !!!! It's a whole new day of ??????! 😀☺️😋 Nothing like having a 'spot' of tea at sunset Mary !!!!! Excellent 👍 video 👍
Thank you Roselea, Derek and Lily are both great thank you so much for asking☺️ I don't think I will do the AT but have plenty of backpacking trips I would like to do, the next ones will be here in the UK this year so I'm looking forward to those.
O, so good to see the trail again and hear your dear voice. The stretches are so helpful at the end or start of a day. Thanks for showing us some of your routine. Being vegan, did you have enough food choices on the trail to keep your energy up?
Thanks so much Joan, glad you liked it😁 Yes there were enough choices most of the time, a few areas were pretty poor where I had to rely on ramen or junk food but it wasn't too bad.
Nicely done. Do you have a video on your vegan food? As a plat based person, I’d love to here about your typical day’s menu. What worked well and what didn’t.
A wonderful side of Mary, we never saw on trail. As I watched everything seem as though it would definitely be a part of your daily routine. All ways conscience of yourself, your surroundings and nature. Thank you for sharing another piece of who you are. Will you be contemplating coming back to the USA for the AT or CDT in the future?
Thank you so much, I did enjoy being at camp on an evening😊 I'm not sure about the AT or CDT, but I will definitely continue hiking and backpacking as I love exploring and being outdoors. We are doing a few trips this year in the UK so I'm looking forward to them!
I'm so glad to see you doing Yoga and stretching after a long day of hiking. That seems like the smart thing to do to keep yourself flexible for the following days trek. Did you find that it helped more than the people not doing that? I am thinking of all the plans I have for keeping healthy on my through hikes and I am hoping that stretching helps take some of the punishment away. I hope you continue hiking and keep posting these amazing videos. Thanks for sharing. :)
Thank you Mike, I'm sure this was why I didn't have as many problems as most hikers, I rarely saw anyone stretching at the end of the day - although I don't blame them as it was exhausting. I just knew I needed to do it to give myself the best chance. I also used to do a few stretches after the first half hour of walking on a morning too once my muscles had warmed up a bit.
I find it easier to stretch after a mile or so on my local hikes too. It's hard to stretch cold ligaments. I admire the way you take care of your body on the trail. I see and read about so many people pushing too hard or far and eating the worst food to keep up the energy. Mostly sugar. You eat healthy and listen to your body. I hope you come back to CA. And do some other thru hikes and take us along. :)
Thanks so much Jamax Adventures! Yes we have some hikes planned this year but only classed as long distance by UK standards...one will be around 270miles which will take 2-3 weeks and another I think will be around 110miles.
Hi Mary, did I miss where you normally kept your pack and food for the night? Were they both stored in your tent? Any problems with animals trying to get to them? NIce video. Keep them coming. Enjoyed very much all of your PCT videos. Did you make it to PCT Days? I made it for one day and got to meet some of the hikers I had been following. But, did not see you. Don from Eugene, Oregon
Hi Donald, thanks for your lovely comments. I usually stored my food sealed up in an extra bag in my pack. I never had any problems with animals. When I was in areas with bears I would often hang my food and of course in certain areas I stored them in a bear canister away from my tent. I never made it to PCT days which is a shame.
What a relaxing time setting up camp and preparing for bed. I'm usually exhausted and just stuff something in my mouth, hang the bear bag, and crawl off to sleep in the dirt 😂😂
Yes I got it the UK, its a brand called f.e.t.e and its a Bamboo Toothbrush. You can get them on Amazon... amzn.to/2UJwYsz I also like the Fat Panda brand too😁
You never disappoint!! You have my favorite color teal. I have a crazy question for you. I've been watching a series on the infamous Sasquatch, lol. I don't personally believe there could be anything like that but with that being said did you every see or hear anything out of the ordinary? You were alone a lot and you seem to pay close attention to detail.
Awwh thank you! I never heard anything (apart from when the Lost Boys and I were playing around)... however it was really strange seeing that single footprint in the middle of nowhere with no other prints around it 👣😳
I know, I felt so light without it🤣 With the used toothpaste I disposed of it away from camp. I did check what I should do before I went out on trail as I wasn't sure myself! On the PCTA website it discusses leave no trace and here is what it said about toothpaste.. "Disperse urine, toothpaste, cooking water and strained dishwater at least 200 feet away from campsites so the soil is not polluted and so wildlife won’t be attracted by the odors and become pests." As I used Dr.Bronners I thought this would be okay as it is one of the most highly biodegradable ones out there too.
Well deserved rest after a long hike with a heavy backpack, up and down. Did your skin get dry in the mountains? Did you do any little laundry between zeros?
Absolutely! I actually have fused L4 & L5 vertebrae. Look into Iyengar Yoga as it is a great place to start as you get to use props rather than having to put yourself under undue pressure to hold postures.
I would say only about 10% of the time did I attempt to do any video editing on trail and that was only when I got too behind with it. I preferred to just enjoy being present on trail. When I did it was only for about 10-15mins on average as I was just too tired. That combined with not wanting to use too much of my battery.
45 days and my pct adventure begins! Thanks for the video
Good Luck!!!
Bob Quintin Good luck and have fun!!!
U lucky dog u !!!!
I sincerely hope it is everything you thought it would be in so much more !!!!

Good Luck Bob

Awwh thank you so much burnetr1. You'll be able to pretend you are hiking in the UK soon when we do our next backpacking trip😁
So restful and calming at the end of the day. I appreciate you sharing this.
Thankyou Cheryl☺️
What a beautiful video and so calming. Having just come back from the Grand Canyon I had to smile at the wildlife reference as the elk would walk through my camp every evening (and morning) :) Thank you again for sharing!
Thank you so much I'm glad you enjoyed it - how special it must have been watching the elk each day!
Get the little things right and the big things will be a success. Thanks Mary, I'll stop taking my bedtime routine for granted. A lovely video x
Thank you☺️
Thank you for sharing your nightly routine. So glad to hear your voice again. Blessings and safe adventures. xx
Thanks so very much Vickie😊
Well done !

Mary you got to get back to the US and hike other trails... Mary we Love You... Don't stop!

This is so cute and peaceful! Thanks for sharing :) I'll be out there in just a couple weeks!
Thank you Lauren, have an amazing time!!
I love this video ~ you have a good 'end of the day' routine. We are starting the PCT next month 🤞🌲🐻
Thank you so much! Have an amazing adventure!
Well done. What a good discipline you maintained throughout. I’m class of 2020-starting in early March 🙂🌿
Thankyou and have an amazing time!!
Thank you Mary! Fun to watch this for many who are preparing for the trail! Great work!! Derek! Your so funny!! Feet that are not washed daily can grow mushrooms I think! Good job caring for feet! It helped loads I’m sure!
Thank you Fred! Going to bed with dirty feet is something I could never embrace on trail, I'd never make it as complete hiker trash would I🤣
Mary Mansfield No you wouldn’t.. Lol😁. For many hikers there is a doable level of hygiene that makes the trail more enjoyable. Recovery through stretching and rolling leg muscles is very important!😊
You have great balance! Enjoyed this video.
Thanks so much!
Beautifully done video! I think your post hike stretching is much better than the rollers I've seen used. Thanks Tink!
Thanks so much Keith!

Yes of course JustaReadingguy, I am going to do a review my 'sleep system' soon so I'll be sure to add more details about the pump sack for you!
Hi Mary, great video. Anyway, you can produce another one about setting up camp in bad weather?
I’m sure I’ll definitely have the opportunity this year during the few backpacking trips planned here in the UK!
Ah...now that was awesome. Thank you so much. Blessings
Thank you so much Betty☺️
Bravo as always ,surely do miss ur hiking n videos cheers mrs.mary

Really enjoyed this video. So glad you showed some stretches and yoga poses tgat you used as I'm wanting to add this to my trails
Thank you and I'm glad it helped!
Great video Mary always interested in the behind the scenes stuff. Thanks

Thank you aikirunner! I have just finished filming one which will be out on the 25th February!
That shot at the end is the one I spoke about in an earlier comment. Thanks for this video. John from MI
😀
Love the post trail videos, keep em coming 👍
Thank you Joe!

Hey Tinkerbell another great video, always with an inner positivity that shines through. Any plans for another long distance hike?
Thanks so much Jamax Adventures! Yes we have some hikes planned this year but only classed as long distance by UK standards...one will be around 270miles which will take 2-3 weeks and another I think will be around 110miles.
Mary Mansfield 2-3 weeks is still a good stint to get into the groove again - enjoy!
I love your routine! I really need to remember to stretch more. Thanks for that! 😊
Thankyou Maryann Hazel!
Glad to see that Ciara didn't blow you away! Nice work as always.
Thank you John!

Thanks Mary. What subscription plan did you have with Garmin for your thru hike.
I had the 'Recreation' plan which was £34.99 a month
What a relaxing time setting up camp and preparing for bed. I'm usually exhausted and just stuff something in my mouth, hang the bear bag, and crawl off to sleep in the dirt 😂😂
There were a few nights like that I'm not going to lie🤣🤣 Especially near the end in the bad weather and snow!
Now you should come back and hike the AT and CDT so I can see more hiking videos. :D
I'm doing some here in the UK this year so I will be sure to video them too!!
Like the toothbrush , did you source that in the us or here in the uk ?
Yes I got it the UK, its a brand called f.e.t.e and its a Bamboo Toothbrush. You can get them on Amazon... amzn.to/2UJwYsz I also like the Fat Panda brand too😁

I almost didn't recognize Mary without her pack on her back.
Serious question, where and what do you do with your "used" toothpaste?
I know, I felt so light without it🤣 With the used toothpaste I disposed of it away from camp. I did check what I should do before I went out on trail as I wasn't sure myself! Well deserved rest after a long hike with a heavy backpack, up and down. Did your skin get dry in the mountains? Did you do any little laundry between zeros?
It did a little, I used coconut oil on trail. Between zeros I did rinse out my underwear most days😁
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures You mentioned coconut oil before, must try. Mine gets terribly dry in the Sierra. Underwear is the most important lol🤣
Is Yoga a possibility for someone with bad knee's, Hip's and four bad L1 through L4 Lumbar Vertebrae.
Absolutely! I actually have fused L4 & L5 vertebrae. Look into Iyengar Yoga as it is a great place to start as you get to use props rather than having to put yourself under undue pressure to hold postures.

Love the asvise hope you watch me try to do what you did I can see you miss the trail
