This is THE BEST vlog by a hiker I have ever watched on "How to Vlog"--trust me, I have watched the lot. So very, very helpful and, might I say, a work of art in itself. What you appear to accomplish with ease is no doubt the result of years of training, practice and talent. Thank you again for taking the time to vlog your amazing journey, and to do it so beautifully. You are a wonder.
Thankyou for such a positive comment Nancy! I’ve not had any training on videoing before so had to self learn a lot over the last year or so. I think my photography knowledge helps a lot, but there is still so much I feel I need to learn to improve☺️
Wow. This was so thorough. Excellent. I especially appreciated how you did not rush your hand movements when showing how you edited. So many tutorials go lickety split and you have to rewind to see what they did. Your pacing was perfect! 👌 And your marvelous sense of humor was there in showing how you have to wait ....endlessly....for things to upload. 😆. I have a new appreciation for all the work that goes into making these videos. And thanks for the tip about white balance and image stabilization when shooting a still photo. Very, very helpful. 👍 You are such an amazing visual artist! Thank you again, for sharing your hard earned knowledge. 🙏🏼💕
That is so kind of you Karen, it did make me laugh when I saw your earlier comment before you watched the video🤣 I'm glad you thought the pace was okay, I was a little concerned as people do usually go so much faster and I hoped my slower pace wasn't too frustrating - but I thought how would I like to see it done (as I try to think with everything)
You are such a gem. You don't constantly ask people to subscribe or mention how to donate on your pages each day. It is so nice of you to do this video for people, as well as take the time in your videos to explain how you eat on trail. Thank you so much for the hours of pleasure you have given me, as well as a lot of inspiration. I wish you much joy in life!
Yes. I hate the "like" and "subscribe" in every video. If someone "likes" your video telling them to do that doesn't change whether they do or not. Not many hit "like" on videos anyway. Not sure why. I always do because it lets me know that I've watched it. Helpful when you miss one or two. You just go back to the last "liked" video and move to the next one. And telling people to "subscribe" probably hasn't made anyone do that so no need to remind people.
Man, the camera work that another channel has is just amazing thinking about all the solo camera work he does. It's forestry forest channel. Thank you Mary!!
Well however you did it, I am so thankful for your PCT vids. I watched and re-watched over n over. I Really really enjoyed walking that thing with you!!!. Cheyenne In NW Montana
Impressive seeing how you do this without a plethora of expensive kit. Getting a workflow going smoothly is key to being able to repeatedly do this. Hat tip to you, Mary!
I appreciated each and every video you made, but after seeing this explanation of your process, I am struck by the enormity of your gift. No matter how tired you were, or how much pain you endured, a video was posted to greet us each day. Thank you, Mary. A job so well done, and treasured by so many.
See you walking forward then back to get your camera, that's so funny and sweet. Thank you so much to showing us. One thing I never forget, the very first phase like "Good....morning.! " and a very beautiful music that you chose.
Finally a solid video about vlogging on trail. I was thoroughly impressed by how you kept this up through the entire PCT. Really well done! Thank you for sharing. I actually think I could do this now.🤷♀️
This is some outstanding information on video production Mary. ❤ 👍 I'm technologically SLOW, so this is a video I'm certainly keeping. Glad to see you healthy & happy.😀 ✌
This is exactly what i have been looking for, no one else on RUclips did this. Thanks so much Mary, also your positivity is priceless congrats on your pct hike. Xx
This is great!!! Thank you so much!! I've never seen anyone ever show such detail in how the filming goes from beginning to the finished product. Just so happens I've started looking at cameras and equipment needed. Within the next year or so I'd like film my hikes. This helps so much. Thank you again!
I just wanted to let you know that this video was so helpful today as I've been having a lot of issues with uploading my videos directly from iMovie (as I had always done) after getting a new phone. I remembered that you were not doing that and so just re-watched it to reference it and voila.... I finally was able to upload my videos from several months ago that had been sitting patiently in my iMovie library LOL. And as a bonus I got to re-watch the cute time-lapse again :)) Thank you so much again!
Excellent video. There is nothing out there on RUclips that highlights to future vloggers of what they might consider in advance of their walk. It's such a great memory to make and to look back in years at what you've made is fabulous. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you Morgs 4Mountains! When I was planning for the PCT I knew I wanted to vlog it and I remember trying to find out how. You are right, I didn't manage to find anything out there either. That is why I decided to make one, so it helps future vloggers with a starting point and an idea of the process😁
Wow Mary !!! I had no idea !!!!! Sooo, NOW when I saye thanks 4 sharing I can grasp what it is that I'm thanking you for !!!! You r the 1st person I've ever seen do a vid on the work behind the scenes 😃😄😀. Cannot ! Thank you enough for your vidz ( as usual ) 😁. Great job Mary 👍👍 ( 2 thumbs up for you )how on Earth did you get so tech savvy ??? I haven't the patience for it.... But I sure appreciate your efforts. Peace, and keep on rocking the free world ☺️.
What a fantastic video/tutorial Mary. It’s so thorough and well thought out and paced. You are a natural at this. And how cute was that little time lapse of waiting for the video to upload 😁😝 and the twirling thumb in your tent LOL well done!!!!! Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into these vlogs! 💙
I've seen all your videos and I am very impressed by your strength and intellect. You are the best I've ever seen and keep up the great work, you are the best! God bless you and everything you do. 👍👍👍👍👍
Mary Thanks for taking the time to film the video....the information was very helpful...really appreciate all the great tips to film a quality video and of course your humor while filming
It's great to see how you did all the vlogging but unbelievable how much effort you had to put into filming your PCT adventure. Thank you for all this hard work. We loved it.
Thanks Mary. This was very informative. I enjoyed all your PCT vlogs. Thanks so much for taking all of us along with you! I know it was a lot of work, and probably slowed you down. I look forward to seeing videos on trails in the UK.
Thank you all the hours and effort spent on sharing your trail with others. I so enjoyed and looked foreword to the bits and pieces of the trail. Informative and entertaining are the two words that come to mind, and of course a third gratitude. Happy trails ahead...
Nary=As a Yank (I spent about 4 months wandering around your island & I was frequently called that), just happy you made it back alive. Hope you had fun & thanks for your work America is larger than it looks on the map. Stay safe and take care. ew
Great video tutorial on hike vlogging. You must have given this lots of thought for it to appear so simple. Happy to see you use the larger version of the travel tripod I've used for a couple of decades, extremely solid and versatile. Thanks for the tips!
Yes it took me a while to get the process down on paper so I knew how to show the steps, it was certainly a learning curve for me doing this! It is a great travel tripod isn't it...I still use it now I'm home!
Wow! This is a fantastic video. Thanks a lot for taking your time and explaining everything in detail. I liked that you directly showed the settings, e.g. with and without stabilisation. This video is perfect for beginners like me. And finally once again a Goooood Morning! Yeah ;)
Amazing! I always wondered the necessary steps for vlogging. You just explained it all in easy to follow steps. Your vlogs are some of my favs. Now I know why. One really big issue most have is the volume of music vs talking. Many times I was having to adjust the volume several times during one video with other bloggers. Their music would be way too loud in comparison to them speaking. Thank you much Mary for sharing your expertise & experiences. 😊
Fantastic how to video, thank-you! I have to say, I wish vloggers wouldn't chose to post in 1080p. High def causes many RUclips videos to stop playing, or other playback problems. I experience this on a regular basis.
That was very well d\one! I had no idea how many steps were required to do the edit and uploading process. It's beyond me for now since I'm still trying to learn how to use my camera on the phone. LOL
Hi Mary, Avid watcher of your PCT and your detailed prep. You persevered on the trail, proud for you. I was supposed to go in 2019 but had a loss in the family. I wasn't successful in Oct to get a permit but I got lucky this Jan and got one it looks like. I have had the last question in my preparation to answer and you just did that for me. You made it look so simple, great job. Now I must practice. Any more through hiking plans for you? Thank you for the inspiration. Jeff.
Thank you so much Jeff. That is great to hear you got a permit, how exciting after your long wait. I plan on doing plenty of hiking here in the UK this year and complete some of our national trails which vary in length - but nothing nearly as long as the PCT!
Excellent. Thanks for this. I'll have to watch it several times to understand the process. I don't own a cell phone so that part is something that I'll have to figure out. I photograph and take videos with a DSLR but don't edit them (yet). I used a Gorilla Pod and TBH that was a PITA. Hard to wrap the legs around a tree and get it tight enough so that the camera didn't slowly move due to the weight. Watching different Vloggers and looking into what cameras (or cell phones) they used and checked prices and will buy the one that I like the results of best. Loved all of your videos. Excellent quality and interesting. Thanks, again, for showing us how you did it. A couple of the biggest complaints were the wind noise and on some the volume of the music was louder than the person normally talked and every time it went from Vlogger speaking to music we had to turn the volume down then back up to hear the Vlogger. Quite a few, including me, told them so they could correct that problem. Also, the background music drowned out what they were saying. You were aware of both of these problems and was on top of it. That was another thing that made your videos a cut above all of the others. Many can learn valuable pointers from you to improve their Vlogging.
Thank you so very much for your kind words again Deborah, it certainly can be a challenge with the wind noise and background music if you aren't careful. I think sometimes I just couldn't get around the wind noise so I just didn't talk much as I know how hard it can be to listen to. Hope you are keeping well ☺️
GOOD MORNING ;-) Thank you for your helpful and detailed insights about vlogging while on the PCT. I have to admit, that i assumed, you had someone at home editing your videos during your thruhike ;-) I don't think I would have the nerve to edit videos on a smartphone, sitting quite uncomfortably in the tent, after a tough day on the trail.
Good Morning Franky1! Now that would have been so nice, it would have saved me so much time and I might have finished before the snow got me! I didn't edit for long on an evening and only some evenings I edited as I preferred to stay present on trail so it was only to catch up. I usually did most of it when in towns.
Wow Mary, that's a LOT of work. Thank you for vlogging on the trail. Nice tips on image stabilization, white balance, etc. FWIW I use a Joby Gorilla Pod trip pod. I don't know what it weighs but it's probably heavier than yours. Hike On!
I found that my camera sank down because it was heavy (probably 4 lbs. It's a DSLR). Also it was hard to wrap it around a tree and get the legs to stay tight. Velcro straps would have been better. Looking into getting the set up she has and remote so I don't have to edit so much (shut the camera off on the back-tracking).
Thanks, Mary. This is fascinating stuff. I haven't seen anyone I've followed on YT explain this process before. It's interesting to see an overview of the editing process from your side of the camera. Good job! I now have a greater appreciation of all your efforts during your 190 or so days on the trail!
Thanks so much John, I never saw a video about this before either so I thought it would be useful for anyone who plans on vlogging themselves as a good starting point😁
Thank you for this informative video, Mary. I was curious about the part where you said you always save the videos in 1080p because whenever I watch your videos they are mostly in 720p, and this particular video was down-res'd all the way to 480p! I watch on a big screen TV with Roku. I wasn't aware, until tonight, that I could change the resolution. It was set on Auto and for some reason it wasn't selecting 1080p for your videos. So I manually selected 1080p and now it looks great! I don’t know why I haven't had that issue with other's videos. But the mystery is solved and I can happily watch your videos now. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing that with me Larry, I have had a couple of people say that about my videos which left me scratching my head as I couldn't figure out why it happened with just a few people but not the majority. I am so glad to hear your solution and if anyone else mentions it again I can try and direct them to follow the solution you found. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know 😊
Very Cool👍 noticed we have the same brand jackets, there is a local sports shop that carries Mountain Equipment which seems very good, my only issue was the zipper is on the wrong side..Thank You for sharing your adventures 😁
Terrific video! I’m an avid hiker & backpacker and want to improve the videos of my adventures. This video has me leaning towards purchasing the Canon G7X Mark II. Couple ?’s: - How does the camera operate in cold temps? Down to the teens? - is there noise when you zoom in/out when videoing? - how did you create your wind reducing fluff and is it covering the microphone or is it placed in front of it? - are you pleased with the durability of the Cannon? My current Olympus Tough camera has lousy video stabilization and the wind ruins many of my clips... so grateful to have found your channel.
Thanks so much Summit Seeker! *The camera worked with no problems at all in low temperatures so I was really pleased with that. *There is a little noise when you zoom in and out unfortunately - I used to mute it where it was very noticeable and put music over it. *To create the wind reducing fluff I glued one side of velcro over the microphone - cutting out the middle so it didn't cover the holes, then glued the other side of velcro to the underneath of a fluffy hat (which I didn't cut the middle out of). I can therefore take it off it I don't need it on. *Yes I am very pleased with the durability of it! *One thing I don't like about it to be honest though is the fact that dust can get into the lens which is a pain. Quite annoying when you think it is all sealed. There are tricks out there of removing it by drilling holes etc which I am sure you can look into if you ever have that problem but I never wanted to risk that so I sent mine off to get it removed which cost a lot. I have not upgraded to the Mark 3 which is supposed to have improved it - but the autofocus isn't as good which is strange. Hope that helps!
Goooood Mooorning!!! 😃Thank you for making all your wonderful videos for us. How long did it take to create a video (on average) on the PCT? Looks like a lot of work.
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Ohhh! For only 12-18 minutes of video but totally worth it. We had a blast every single day and hope more people will watch and enjoy. I am sure we will revisit too.
10:00 is there any reason you could not import this way with your phone in airplane mode? Thereby saving phone battery better on trail? Great vid btw, really handy to see how it's done.
This is absolutely fantastic Thank you so very much for taking the time and energy to do this Sheila Vancouver BC 🇨🇦 Looks like Harry and Meghan are moving close to where I live. We will take good care of them since they are the Royals
Thanks for the info, very helpful. How much footage did you shoot? Did you have many memory cards full? When you edited the video on your phone, did you then delete the completed videos to make room for the new files? Sorry for so many questions, but no one really talks about these things. What's your next outing?
I’m not sure how much I shot, probably around only 10% more that didn’t go into the final videos. I filled all my memory cards & phone. It was like a game trying to edit and upload so I could keep freeing up space. After each video was completed and uploaded I deleted all the footage as I went along and only really backed up my photos to iCloud as it would have been impossible to back up all my videos. The ones I uploaded to RUclips I can download at home. I managed to get some raw footage saved but very little. Please feel free to ask anything further if it’s not clear!
Did you find you needed to keep your screen on while uploading to RUclips? When I did it while on the AT, I had to disable the sleep mode, turn down the screen brightness and plug my phone into my external battery pack so it wouldn't run out of power for all the hours it would take to upload one video. Also, I don't see the 'Scheduled' option when editing an uploaded video (also using iphone 7+) which I thought was a bit weird.
Yes Michael I did...it was such a nuisance! You couldn't use the phone for anything else either otherwise it would reject the upload. Regarding not seeing the scheduled option...there might be 2 things I can mention for you to try if you haven't already... Firstly, make sure when you upload the video you mark it as 'Private' and not public. Then once its uploaded you can change it to scheduled. Once it has been uploaded as Public you can't undo this and schedule it later. Sorry if this is obvious...but I did make this mistake a few times🙄 Secondly, just check you have 'unlocked' the scheduling feature which you have to do before you can use it. To do this you need to verify your channel. To check to see if you need to do this, login to your Channel, click Creator Studio, then Channel, then Status and Features. If your channel is verified and RUclips considers you a “partner,” your Account Status will say “Partner Verified.” If not, you have to go through the verification process by applying and they send you a code via your phone. I hope this helps!

Yeah Mary made this "how to" so clear even a technologically SLOW old fart like me can now make sense of it all.

She's getting her moneys worth out of that beanie:) Lots of good tips in there.

This is some outstanding information on video production Mary. ❤ 👍
I'm technologically SLOW, so this is a video I'm certainly keeping.
Glad to see you healthy & happy.😀 ✌
Excellent job Mary (Tinkerbell). I can barely figure out how to leave a comment on this page (ha ha). Keep up the good work.
Thank you Donald!
This is exactly what i have been looking for, no one else on RUclips did this. Thanks so much Mary, also your positivity is priceless congrats on your pct hike. Xx
Thank you so very much monkeyingout, I'm so glad it has helped you!
I think your audio was amazing throughout your hike, and I think it improved so much by adding that 'dead cat' thing over the microphone port.
Thank you!
Nicely done, as always. Y'know this makes me miss you being out on trail and getting daily videos.
This is great!!! Thank you so much!! I've never seen anyone ever show such detail in how the filming goes from beginning to the finished product. Mary, this is so thoughtful and generous! You are amazing.
Thank you,

Thankyou so much Steve!
A great video, thanks for sharing. Anyone who has done trail videos will know that we walk twice as far as anyone else! Usually up and down a hill!

Hope you are keeping well ☺️
That was coooooool! Thanks. Can't wait till the next video. Super blessings to you
Interesting! Got your camera for our daughter for Christmas! Great photography Mary❤️❤️🤗
Off all your vids this has you so naturally. You are always sweet. But natural
Thank you so much!
Another great video Mary! really appreciate you sharing this and all of your hard work on the PCT!! ♥️
Thankyou!
Thank you for all these wonderful tips.
Very good info on the process of vlogging. Thanks so much! 😊
Thanks!
Always good to see you.
Your hike looked similar to the foothill area where I live in Norcal.
Thankyou John!
Thank you Mary for showing how you filmed your PCT hike. I can see now how much time it took to put everything together. Very good video.
Thanks so much Richard!
You are the most upbeat, smiling hiker I’ve come across! What are you taking and mind sharing?😁
🤣 Thanks so much John!
Excellent video Mary - thank you so much! Great info, clear and concise.
Thanks so much Chris!
Agree! Really well done and informative - I learned a lot! Thank you Mary!
Thank you Susan!
GOOD MORNING ;-)
Thank you for your helpful and detailed insights about vlogging while on the PCT.
I have to admit, that i assumed, you had someone at home editing your videos during your thruhike ;-)
I don't think I would have the nerve to edit videos on a smartphone, sitting quite uncomfortably in the tent, after a tough day on the trail.
Good Morning Franky1! Now that would have been so nice, it would have saved me so much time and I might have finished before the snow got me! I didn't edit for long on an evening and only some evenings I edited as I preferred to stay present on trail so it was only to catch up. I usually did most of it when in towns.
Thank you for all the work and dedication to share with us your adventure(s) 😉
Wow Mary, that's a LOT of work. Thank you for vlogging on the trail. Nice tips on image stabilization, white balance, etc. FWIW I use a Joby Gorilla Pod trip pod. I don't know what it weighs but it's probably heavier than yours. Hike On!
I found that my camera sank down because it was heavy (probably 4 lbs. It's a DSLR). Also it was hard to wrap it around a tree and get the legs to stay tight. Velcro straps would have been better. Looking into getting the set up she has and remote so I don't have to edit so much (shut the camera off on the back-tracking).
great tutorial! 😊😊😊👍
Thanks so much!
Really great advice. Thank you …. I have picked up a few tips from you!
So glad I could help Dave!
Mary & John: Frozen at Outdoor Adventures made a nice one too. He hiked the Appalachian Trail last year. ruclips.net/video/qRmrfadm2pc/видео.html
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures BTW, half my ancestors come from the Norwich area of your Country.
I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know 😊
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures You're welcome, Mary. Happy Hiking.
This is a very helpful and informative video Mary.
Thank you Riley!
Very Cool👍 noticed we have the same brand jackets, there is a local sports shop that carries Mountain Equipment which seems very good, my only issue was the zipper is on the wrong side..Thank You for sharing your adventures 😁
Oh how funny, its a lovely jacket I got it as a Christmas present😁
Terrific video! I’m an avid hiker & backpacker and want to improve the videos of my adventures. This video has me leaning towards purchasing the Canon G7X Mark II. Couple ?’s:
- How does the camera operate in cold temps?
Simple, clear and concrete. Thank you very much.
Thank you Fran!
Thank you for this! You are such an inspiration!
Thanks you Susanna!

So helpful! Thank you!
This a fantastic video. I really enjoyed watching the process and finding out about some apps I hadn't previously heard of. Thank you.
Fantastic! This is ine thing that is overlooked in soooo many thru-hike videos. It's a very nice primer.
Cheers

Goooood Mooorning!!! 😃Thank you for making all your wonderful videos for us. How long did it take to create a video (on average) on the PCT? Looks like a lot of work.
Hi Ksenia, not including the actual filming or uploading... probably around 2-3hours for each one!
@@MarysOutdoorAdventures Ohhh! For only 12-18 minutes of video but totally worth it. We had a blast every single day and hope more people will watch and enjoy. I am sure we will revisit too.
That was a great vid thank you.
Thank you Stan the Man Hikes!
Very informative and useful. Brilliant! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much!
Thank you
You're welcome!
Awesome!
10:00 is there any reason you could not import this way with your phone in airplane mode? Thereby saving phone battery better on trail? Great vid btw, really handy to see how it's done.
Thanks so much Human Chiming In - yes I did used do it in airplane mode when out on trail
Ok. How did you do the how you vlog vid 😅 just kidding. Nice one. Thank you. 👍
🤣
very nice, thank you!!
Yay! This is going to be so good. 👍. Thank you. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Sorry if this is obvious...but I did make this mistake a few times🙄
Secondly, just check you have 'unlocked' the scheduling feature which you have to do before you can use it.
This was great
