    My brother took me to see Venom back in the 80’s and I’ve been a Metal head ever since. The last concert my wife and I went to see was Benediction. We may be in our late 40’s, but we can still slam when we’re in the pit!

    If you are on the ground floor.
    be aware of what's going on around you! My gf and I went to see Coheed a few years back and the first 2 bands that opened were kinda chill, but when Glassjaw came out and played we got just..absolutely tossed around,she got squished , I lost my beer and my coheed hat got bent, almost lost my signed key of z comic. Some guy was trying to like. .climb on my back and I had to deal with him. it was awful. sucked cause we were in the front row and had to go to the back...but we got to go over to this lounge area and meet some pretty cool people so it all worked out.But man....it was rough getting caught in a pit so quick....Daryl Palumbo did point at us to make sure we were ok though so that was also kinda cool.

    I've been a metalhead for more than 10 years but never had a metalhead friend and didnt know where to find them. By the time I knew where I could make friends I was too scared to be judge ( I'm very small 1,50m and "cute/girly") and that everyone would gatekeep me and start to ask me about all sort os trivia about the bands... because of that Ive been nervous of wearing bands t-shirts even though I'd be listening to them.
    This gatekeep of myself have brought lots os burdens beside not having metalhead friends, like I was always trying to listen to most bands that I could, listen to their whole discography, just to be sure that I could answer anything someone would ask me. I still have this problem of prioritizing the quantity over quality of the metal I listen to.
    I've been to my first metal show this year, I was an Emperor show, the only time they came to my country and I was unbelievable seeing that many people sharing the same passion as I.
    Anyways.
    Great video JJ♡

      Hey, thank you for sharing your story. I also used to crazy research on bands because I was so afraid of being quizzed about it at shows. I’m happy to report that no one has ever questioned my knowledge on a band (though I know it has happened to others). Glad you enjoyed your first show!
      Also, I only have metalhead friends on the internet… ok my only friends exist on the internet 🤣

  • @BartonHNewell

    I love the idea behind this video, and it's something that never really occurred to me, since I've been a metalhead pretty much my whole life.
    On that first point of gatekeeping, it's really funny how many people psych themselves out thinking about stuff like that- here in the South, there's a lot of odd overlap where you'll see Hank III shirts, Infant Annihilator shirts, and the occasional Taylor Swift shirts all at the same Mastodon show for example- no one really seems to care.
    The ticket info was super good info to include- very well thought out thing to explain to someone who may not have ever been. I've been burned on a VIP ticket as well for an OzzFest- was supposed to do some meet and greet stuff, and didn't realize there was a section I had to go to until after the event, luckily the event managers were cool and gave me a partial refund.
    Seating info was pretty solid, too- one thing I'd mention as well is that if you're up close to the stage or in a smaller venue, EARPLUGS.
    My wife and I have been to quite a few shows and I figure you'll hit on it later on in the series, but run-free make up is great for if you sweat a lot (or are at a GWAR concert and are getting drenched in various alien fluids). Tight fitting clothing for women (sports bra, leggings, etc) are great, especially if you plan to surf because there's always that one gropey perv. I usually end up being the pack mule and wear cargo pants to carry whatever we need, and there's a couple of great brands that have zip-up pockets which rules when you're in the pit. Always eat and drink before hand- the food and drink in the venue is always mega expensive.
    Keep up the hard work, much love!

    • @JJMetalhead
      @JJMetalhead  2 года назад

      Thank you for sharing your story! Sucks you miss out at Ozzfest, but I’m glad you were able to get a refund (that’s almost unheard of these days!)
      And you brought up some great points for future videos. I’ll definitely have to include those points, especially about pockets and earplugs. 🤘🏻

  • @VZed
    @VZed 2 года назад +14

    Fantastic video series idea. As a metalhead, I believe there are many m ore metalheads out there who don't know they're metalheads yet.
    Heck yes for checking out openers. I've found so many favourites who started by opening for big acts I already love.
    One thing I would suggest including down the line (if you want to) is talking about earplugs. Obviously earplugs are a personal choice but I invested in a good custom pair as most of the shows i've been to were ones my band was playing at, but even some regular foam earplugs can do a good job of turning down the volume of the room without distorting the sound too much. At this point I swear by ear plugs at shows especially since hearing tests at work revealed some hearing damage in my right ear, and once they told me I knew EXACTLY which show it happened at (Dream Theater, '09 front row, right next to the mains, amazing show).
    Again, great video. Will be following with interest.

    • @JJMetalhead
      @JJMetalhead  2 года назад

      Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn’t thought about talking about earplugs, but I will absolutely add that in to one of these videos. Especially after hearing your story. I’m terrible about wearing them but the next show I go to where I’m up near the monitors, I really need to wear them.

    Watching this two years later and it's still so helpful! I don't mind crowds but I don't like being crowded, if that makes sense. So I don't usually go to concerts because giant venues make me uncomfortable. I do adore seeing my "niche" metal groups because the venues are smaller. I also don't want to look like a poser because I am not purely a metalhead (Spotify tells me Kpop and Power Metal are my top genres, lol). The one thing I learned is YOU CAN WEAR ANYTHING. No one truly cares if you 'look' the part. I saw Blind Guardian back in 2016 and there was a guy in a Pink Power Ranger onesie. Wear whatever you want. Just be respectful of the venues rules and of your fellow concert-goers.

Hope I can see a bit of them too, but by then I have to get back to the train to go back home. So I'm not sure how much I can see of Behemoth.
