Why is tech in cars more expensive? | Talking Cars | Malayalam Review

  • Nowadays, cars that are packed with technology seem to be quite pricey. LED lights, Touch screen, navigation, alloy wheels, hybrid tech - they all cost a lot of money and people are paying nearly double for top end models now a days. But do they have to be really this expensive? A scooter like the OLA or Ather has these tech and they have a company to run and yet the product costs only a fraction of the cost. So why do we pay so much for our cars then?

As a commerce student, I will tell you my thoughts on these…
    1. There will be three models for cars- lowest, middle and top models. Lowest models, as you said are only there to attract people to the showrooms. These models generate the lowest profits and therefore, the manufacturers are not even interested in selling them. The top models are there just to make people feel like the middle level models are worth their money. They will claim a whopping sum for addition of very less features, thereby luring customers into thinking that the middle level models are value for money. This will lead to more people buying the middle level models and which means that the company can use economies of scale to reduce cost of production for per unit produced of the product.
Middle level cars are the cash cows and are pushed heavily. The revenue loss they incur from selling low model cars is realised on the sale of top model cars, hence the price difference.
    2. Most of the feature differences are just there to differentiate between the top and middle level buyers. Maybe 2 inches more of screen or a specific colour may not mean so much to a rational consumer, but for a person focused on buying the best car out there, it is still a compromise to make. If someone is willing to pay for the highest version of the car, he will have to be provided with some additional features for the money. For a person who buys a car because it has internet inside, 2 inches is too much to let go of.
    3. Companies now use superior analytical systems to understand what the customers want. Anything we see on the car is there because the customers wanted it. Screens are taking over because they are cheap to make and also because customers perceive them as a superior feature. It makes them feel like they are buying a better car for some reason. I personally know people who bought the new baleno because of the heads up display alone.
I am waiting for the day when these screens lag and make the car unusable. Annu ellaarodum parayanam “Njaan Pande ith paranjathallenn”. 😂

Excellent analysis. Comment posted by Anand A makes this post complete. Perhaps, this is the first time such a common sense analytical post is published about ‘available options’ in cars by any automotive channel in India. I have not read any as well, so far. Your post shines meaningful light on this option shopping madness/marketing that has gripped Indian customers. This is why our channel is unique. Keep them coming. 👍🏿

And I am very happy for that. "WE ARE HERE FOR THE OTHER ANGLE TO LOOK AT".
So.. ആ കുറവുകൾ അറിയാനും, genuine reviews നും, different point of view ഇൽ കര്യങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, ശെരിക്കും customer ന് importance കൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് മാർക്കറ്റിങ്ങിലെ സത്യാവസ്ഥ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, വണ്ടിയുടെ ഓരോ aspect ലെയും(engineering, r&d, features, pricepoints, actual cost etc) ശെരിക്കുള്ള value മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും, പല കാര്യത്തിലും ഒരു reality check നടത്താനും(especially, is it really worth it എന്ന aspect ഇൽ) ഒക്കെ ആയിട്ട് ആണ് ഞങ്ങൾ(atleast myself) talking cars follow ചെയ്യുന്നത്.. This is a good one.. So.. keep it up guys.. and please try to stay loyal for the "ORIGINAL" Talking Cars followers 😇.

Thanks for bringing this up, boys. Personally, I have also been very annoyed with the whole tasteless digital transformation of the instrument cluster. Imo, nothing looks better than a neat analogue instrument cluster. It doesn’t even have to be fancy. It can be as basic as it can get (like in a Maruti 800) with just the speed markers and the needles, and even then, it’s got character. And that’s something we cannot say for digital clusters.
(Also, special mention for Citroen for achieving that disaster of a digital cluster. It is almost insulting the buyer. My Casio F91W looks better than that.)

But after seeing this episode, i had a second thought. Why dont consider delta model of baleno and just add an afer market 360 degree camera and alloys. Its just costs me around 75k more on the base price of delta model. When i chose an alpha model, i have to pay around 3 lakh more. Thank you guys 😍😍😍

Thanks Vivek & JD for this discussion. Let me put down my thoughts also here.
During product development automobile manufacturers generally organize the features in to buckets namely "Standardized features" and "Differentiating features" in their platforms. During product integration they wisely cherry pick the apt features out of these buckets depending up on priorities of the targeted market.
These features include the powertrain function features (high engineering- production cost) and also connectivty/UX/Automation features (relatively lesser cost).
In case of cost sensitive and highly demanding markets like India, they follow this strategy to pick more of connectivity and UX features which will give a premium feel for the user with out increasing their production costs. But in more mature markets like Europe they follow different strategies.
Also now that the IC engine powertrain R&D has more or less become saturated, OEMS are investing more on connectivity, personalization and UX. That's also a reason why we see more such features available as Differentiating factors across car variants.

I am still having loads of fun with the car and it has a tiny puny touch screen which is almost useless. Instead, I have a magnetic tablet mount on top of it! Won't buy any new car soon since there is no replacement for Hexa with similar value for money. It would've been good as you said if the manufacturers leave a dock for a display instead - but not easy since the whole industry needs to be compliant with that.

Also all we need to have(or some authority need to prepare and publish)a basic list of actual needed things for a good car in Indian roads with better ridability, handling, safety, user friendly and update friendly which can be runnable with physical controls in case of even soft features got some failure.

Such a relevant episode. However, I am afraid all these makes sense to old school enthusiasts. Most of the newer ones are after bigger touchscreens, air purifiers, larger sunroofs, voice controls, the works.
A reliable engine-gearbox combo, good braking performance, which were fundamentals of a good car are now passé. Sad, but true ☹️

    • @albinkrn1
      @albinkrn1 2 года назад

Absolutely true. They don't consider the actual worth of the features or purpose, it's just that they want. This is were I suggest everyone to stick to their existing car if they are reliable and does the job for them even if they are old. I'll stick with my 07 Corolla even with 1.5lac kms on it until govt bans it from road. I'll admit that it gulps petrol, but has zero mechanical issues.

After that we bought a Taigun highline AT and my little brother hates it. For him the poli car is Sonet and he had also seen test drive Taigun with sunroof so always beg me to make a hole in our car for sunroof.

This trend of easy to do feature sold as premium came first from tubeless tyre puncture repair. It still costs 100-120 RS to fix a tubeless tire which takes hardly 10 minutes. In the meanwhile you have to remove the tires, remove the tube, check for hole, cut an alternate piece of rubber to patch the hole, refix the tube, bolt up the tire and an hour later, we just pay 30-40 RS. Never understood the logic!!

Recently I booked a Tata Nexon EV Max from Muthoot Tata Kollam and when the car was alloted to the showroom, we paid 1Lakh as advance for the car.
After inspecting the car at the yard, they are asking 60,000Rs more saying that Tata has increased the price and billing price is taken into consideration and not the advance amount.
Announcing a lower price and increasing it at the time of delivery is a cheap sales technique.
We took the car since there is no similar alternative.

Wonderful topic picked. Very often, many car manufacturers are focusing on silly features(adding some chrome/paint job and calling it a new version) Customers in general also seem to be interested in these gimmicky features rather than cars fundamentals (engine, chassis & build quality, suspension, tyres). Looking forward to more videos like this.

    How many would agree...
That steel wheels last more than alloys, and are easily repairable? People go gaga on mag wheels!
That sunroof is useless in majority of polluted Indian roads
That makers can leave a lot of unnecessary features and add 6 airbags as standard
That mileage is more important than metal quality and body weight
That DRLs are just show pieces
    and many more....
You are spot all of the points! Good job both!

Having undesirable base models to attract customers with "starting from..." and upselling from there - I can accept that. But to skimp on basic utilities like ISOFIX mounts, fog lamps, telescopic steering, rear wiper/defogger, more airbags etc (at least as options) frustrates me to no end. The formula seems to be
    1. Base model - no style, no features, no safety
    2. Mid model - Half baked style, pepper some of the feel good features for a significant premium
    3. Top model - All kinds of feel good features and key utilities for an exorbitant extra premium
