I Tried To Turn This Bowl in 2017 but Failed, 6 Years Later I Am Trying Again

  • I was recently going back through some of my older work and came across a bowl that was turned back in 2017. It was a bowl I was very proud of but one where I lacked the confidence in my abilities and did not turn the bowl how I would have liked too. Here I am 6 years later revisiting this bowl so I can once and for all turn it the way I wanted to back in 2017.

    I look back at my work from the 70's and, like you, I took pride in it then. Enjoy the journey my friend.

      I appreciate you sharing that; Its crazy how fast that time flies! I sometimes doubt my work but then when I see old pieces like this it reminds me how far I have come.

    I love that look, def is a stand out bowl. I’m sure that took a while to do.
    2017? That was just yesterday right?!?! Gah time flies.
    But I would def keep that style going, it’s a beautiful look and very unique. I like you how you made the ridges (?) stand out further than the lip of the bowl.
    Great video as always

      Thank ya buddy! Didn't take as long as I expected but still had to be patient with it. I do have a few more shapes planned using this style so we will see! And I am glad that I recessed the top and bottom, gave the bowl a whole different look. Thanks for the comment as always man!

    Beautiful work! Could you possibly share a bit about how you dry the bowl after turning? I can't keep my once turned oak bowls from cracking

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  Год назад

      Absolutely! So my process is a little odd but I just turn the bowl to final thickness, do a wet sanding with 80 grit and then I just sit them in front of my AC vent in my office to sit for a few weeks. After that I just move them into the shop again to sit until I can finish them. They are usually ready to go within 5 - 6 weeks total, sometimes less, sometimes more. I have had pretty good success with Oak doing it this way but its very dependent on getting the correct thickness specifically where the bowl curves towards the foot.

    Excellent work. You’ve turned a beautiful bowl. I personally love the warped look of this bowl. I also know that not everyone cares for it. Regardless, this is a beautiful bowl.

      Thank you! The warped look is one of my favorites but youre right, its definitely a unique look not for everyone but not everyone has great taste like us! lol

    This bowl is gorgeous and dont think i have seen many beaded outsides done. I like the way it dried, did the beads form that topical map type texture?
    I know i have commented on your shots before but again these are great, do you plan out your locations and shots as you go or are you just setting up where seems right for what you are turning at that moment? Im still working through where the shots work for my setup, i use your videos as inspiration.

      Sorry for the delay, I just make it up as I go! lol I keep track of different angles I have done in the past and try to repeat those and while filming. I also try to not repeat the same angles so much while filming. I like to follow the rule of Wide shot, close up shot & detail shot and just repeat that throughout the process. Hope that helps!!

    It's just amazing how much more character some simple beads and warping can transform a plain bowl into beautiful work of art. Especially when the oil is applied. As always, great job Andrew!

      The beads definitely add alot of contrast & pop that makes them stand out even with how small they are and I loved it! As always John, I appreciate the comment!

    Turning oak that large with no cracks at all--my hat is off to you! Did you re-true the foot of the bowl before you finished it?

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  Год назад

      It took me many throwaway pieces but once I learned how oak dries, I have had pretty good success with it! Its become one of my favorite woods to turn lately and I didnt. Since the bowl was warped, it wouldnt have made a huge difference. I just kept the speed down while sanding and then turned it off once I was done!

    Beautiful beaded bowl, mate! I still enjoy cutting my larger blanks into rounds outdoors. You can actually achieve a pretty good circle with the saw if you want to. We didn't have a bandsaw for a long time, so my father-in-law found a way for us to saw up all our blanks using this
