      Hi Hanan, Anxiety is obviously very crippling for you! Although you can manage some forms of anxiety with through deep breathing, it's more likely to be managed with behavioural techniques. I'm planning to produce a course soon regarding this problem. If you're interested, please sign up to my mailing list here: www.jimmycannon.com/

    It definitely has to do a lot with a certain psychological background and level of self-awareness. For example, when I don't even think of stuttering or of the problem itself, I am less likely to stutter. On the other hand, when I am conscious about it, or of the situation I'm in at that particular time (for example knowing that there are people watching me, listening to me, and worst case scenario judging me) then the stutter becomes worse and worse. It certainly is absurdly frustrating because it makes you look like you're either a fool or plainly stupid and I personally HATE it, because I know my potential. I guess caring too much about what people say and not having enough self-confidence really takes a toll on this issue.

    • @jimmycannonvoicecoach
      @jimmycannonvoicecoach  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing. Yes, generally the perceived anxiety of people judging you is more likely to make you stutter before you've even started a conversation.

      This is the exact same thing I’ve been experiencing, you literally spoke the words in my mind., how are you overcoming this? I’m usually speaking fine until I feel someone listening to me or judging me😢

    • @horvathlaszlo96
      @horvathlaszlo96 Год назад

      @@schkeithad5689 Hi! I think it's extremely difficult to overcome it all alone by figuring yourself out. I've been doing that for years. To answer your question...well, I sometimes endorse an attitude of internal arrogance and selfishness as a defense mechanism, which means putting myself first, above all. Then, I realized that slowing down helps a lot, actually. (I have a tendency to think and speak very fast, in so far as sometimes syllables intertwine, lol). Stabilizing your tempo will certainly help, but there's also an immense amount of self-care: don't go too hard on yourself, don't compare yourself to anyone else (instead strive to be better than yesterday), and realize that nobody is perfect (because even if you have this tendency, probably, to be jealous on others due to their fluency, they certainly have other flaws, which you don't). I also leant that proper articulation also helps. I, for instance, speak 4 languages, two of which are native. The more and the better I try to articulate words, the more it helps.
      However, sometimes, it's all for naught when negative thoughts and feelings overshadow all the hard work your putting in to better your situation. This is unfortunate, but it's part of life, for better or for worse. It's ying and yang... You can't always win, just as well as you won't always lose.
      Another issue would be your self love. Unfortunately, if you won't love your whole self, just as it is, no one will truly do...and you can't wait for others to come in for the rescue. Love your own self, it's you, just the way you are, it's precisely what makes you, you. As hard as it may seem, we also have to embrace our demons to conquer them. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
      Take care and be brave~
      At the end of the day, we're all just miserable human beings, each in their own way. Your flaw doesn't make you ANY less than anybody else. Remember this!

    Automatically abdomen, chest,throat tightness , because we hold the breathing tight when we feel nerves about stuttering word. So deep breathing from abdomen will relax abdomen muscle, then deep breathing will reduce chest tightness . Finally relax throat muscle and inhale and exhale deep breath. Focus abdomen, chest throat relaxation by deep breathing. Focust deep breathing all times. This technique will reduce 50% statammer. So focus about what happens when we stuttering
    Speech muscle tightness....

    Thanks so much for the help! Definitely some very useful tips for me.
    I've had a problem where I can't say words starting with vowels properly (especially on 'e' sounds like 'end') - it feels like something just clogs up and I just can't get any air out. It's fine when I'm more relaxed and I'm talking smoothly, but in some situations I end up kind of choking, and I have to restart my sentence.
    I'm not sure how helpful of a description this is, but where would you say the problem lies?

    • @jimmycannonvoicecoach

      Hi Oscar, the reaction is probably a somatic one based on anxiety at some point in your life. There’s a lot to delve into, and here’s not the best place to discuss.. I would for the time being suggest glottal exercises by creating sub glottal pressure before you start a word such as ‘end’ I’ll try and dig out a video. Please consider subscribing as well as joining my mailing list at jimmycannon.com
      I’m planning to create some courses/webinars soon on specific areas...

      I also have a problem with that and It's freaking me out

    • @kirtangun15
      @kirtangun15 2 года назад +2

      I have the same problem.
      It goes like my mind is scanning all the words I wanted to say and it tries to avoid the words starting from vowels.
      Some days in the month I feel very confident and would decide that I'll not stammer from now on in my life.
      And some days it's feels like 'I better be quite and if I open my mouth it would start stammering again'
      I have analysed my mouth and came up with some solutions:
      1 (as shown in the video) Take a deep breathe and speak on the exhale
      2 Distract your mind by using your hand while speaking(which also helps in communication skills :)
      3 I imagine that some one is doing the word(especially verbs) that I wanted to say in front of my eyes
      4 I speak the next letter of the word(for eg. saying 'Animation' - nn-i-ma-tion
      or saying 'Enemy' - nn-i-mm-i
      5 (maybe you have noticed it or not) Your mind reminds you that 'you stutter' 5-10-15mins after you wake up. So try to get your mind busy when you wake up.
      6 You may do some weird thing while speaking your 'so called hard word' (for eg. I push my whole tongue to the roof and do up and down in loop I don't know why)
      7 Don't try to avoid the 'so called hard word'. Speak that word, don't try to use synonyms of the word.
      And Finally you know this problem doesn't have any proven fixes BECAUSE 'this ain't a problem'. Yes you read that correctly. This ain't a problem.
      You keep reminding yourself that you stutter(but you don't)
      You tell yourself that 'I can't overcome this'(but you can)
      God is testing your strength, show him your strength.
      Don't forget that one day we both will speak fluently and BELIEVE in your self as I do my friend.
      Thank you ❤️

    Im 29 almost 30 and have dealt with stuttering my entire life... On some real shit it wierd but if I sing or Rap I don't stutter.. it's really frustrating not being able to verbally express your self the way you want to so I will try and re word it and use easier words for me to say, and if it's someone who doesn't know me they automatically assume im stupid. I have certain points in time through out my life that my speech improves it seems to correspond with how I'm doing at that point in time. So yes I realized my problem is the disappointment I feel and the regret if what were supposed to be my best years

      I'm sorry that you're going through this. Singing uses the right hemisphere of the brain. This is why I recommend using intoning and flow to help the connection between the breath and the sound when you're speaking.

      Hi Ledia, Practice starting with an aspirate onset (breathy) and use the air to start the sound. It's more likely that your abdominal muscles are tensing just before you go to speak the sound, so by letting air out first will relax the muscles and allow the sound to phonate.

      Hi there Hammad. So you’re suffering from a form of speaking anxiety, which is very common! There are lots of ways to manage and get rid of anxiety, and in my opinion desensitisation techniques work the best. If you’re interested, in thinking about putting together a course for people who have difficulty speaking in public. Please go to my website and fill out the contact form, and I’ll let you know when the course starts.. hello@jimmycannon.com

      It will help, however I would focus on the cause of the anxiety itself first.

      I think you can actually. You shouldn’t feel obliged to continue speaking even on the phone. In fact, by pausing occasionally gives you more authority

      Hi Shaun, these are very different vowel shapes and tongue placements. I would suggest that it's the anxiety that is making you stutter and some breathing and disorientation exercises would help.
