  • The vast majority of Sierran Leoneans - 80 percent in fact - are under 35. But is the government doing enough to empower this young generation? DW's Edith Kimani asks young Sierra Leoneans if they feel powerful enough to make their mark on the global stage.

However, my convictions remain the same. There’s so much that can be done to accelerate progress among youth in our country. We are yet to match global standards.

Haja I am so in respect and awe of your thought process. Yes we need to compete locally first. The misguided arrogance of always comparing our situation and productivity to UK and Europe or America is like a feather weight wanna be boxer who doesn't even understand the rules of boxing, challenging a heavyweight champion. It's suicidal at best.
We must learn to have a sense of grandeur from within first.

Quite an interesting program here. Generally, I'm impressed. As a young Sierra Leonean, myself, I'd say there's still hope for things to change for the better in this country if we work as empowered young people to support impoverished or less fortunate youths to come on board. Inclusive development is the only way out. Everyone can be useful in their own way. Discrimination should never be part of our vocabulary as young people in development.

Great point. Our continent had no 1st, 2nd or 3rd industrial revolution, yet we are busy talking about the 4th industrial revolution. The entrepreneurship and innovations of Telsa, Microsoft etc. couldn't exist without the prior industrial revolutions. We can't ignore the basics before we reach for the stars. We tend to focus on the top 20% of the population and neglect the 80% majority. Focusing on a few major cities and ignoring 90% of our countries. Access to education and basic infrastructure/services for all will take tour countries a very long way, and open up loads more opportunities for innovation even in rural areas.
