I have just downloaded Gimp just to do this effect. What a world we live in... Gimp free, inkscspe free and Nicks tutorials free. Wow! Let that sink in. Thanks to all 3 of the above. Much appreciated guys.
This is my first comment on youtube ever... I posted it because this video deserves a compliment. You have a beautiful channel with many interesting tutorials and your explanation is very smooth and consistent. Thanks.
I just wanted to stop by and tell you that this is the very first tutorial I followed when I first downloaded GIMP almost two years ago. Because you did such an amazing job at being clear and thorough, I believed I could learn GIMP, which I thought to be an insurmountable task at the time. I had never used any kind of photo editing or digital art software before. Now I use GIMP and Inkscape (also thanks to your tutorials) daily to create designs for my home decor shop. You never know when you're going to inspire someone to try something new. Thank you for all of your wonderful tutorials.
I have been wanting to learn how to create this effect for an album cover. I woke up this morning and found this video on my news feed. You make fantastic content AND you also have a new subscriber! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)
To be fair I never found it very restrictive. I think the big thing is it's ui wasn't as clean as photoshop and the plug-ins are differently named so it can be confusing for someone used to photoshop or any other editor. They've done a great job cleaning it up and making it more user friendly over the years
Amazing tutorial, incredible that after 7 years, with some little modifications, I was able to replicate this effect. Many thanks for such a clear and comprehensive tutorial!
Dude I just wanna say you are helping me so much. I got screwed by my college but anyways using gimp and it being free and watching you has helped me get much better at what I wanna do
Went freelancer and was looking for a cheaper alternative to Photoshop. I've been an Adobe girl for the last 6 years so wasn't sure something else would be as good as that software. You totally blew my mind! THANKS A LOT for these videos, really! It feels so good to know there are alternatives out there, it makes new startings easier :)
Hello nick. I discovered your channel a few days ago, and since then I have seen 3 to 4 lives a day, the channel has an excellent content, I am seeing 3 or 4 year olds that you did and they are all of excellent quality, it shows that you are indeed a professional. Thank you very much for sharing your work. I'm from the IT infrastructure area, but I can't stop seeing what is possible to do with Gimp and inkscape. Thanks again and keep posting new videos.
The Smoke brushes native size are vastly large. I can change them but it will return to native size once i click naother and go back. Anyway to resize them and set it as the native size. Newly interested in this so thanks Nick for the tutorials.
Great video as always Nick! Someone may have already suggested this but you should make a video on how to create a simple animated GIF logo using GIMP. That'd be neat. I apologize if someone already suggested that.
Awesome tutorial. This is somewhat similar to the effect of Chinese ink which I like so much. First time as a newbie that I come into contact with brushes. Thanks a lot!
1:44 This dude's got mad "world weary detective" vibes. Also kinda looks like a character portrait for Baldur's Gate. LOL Thanks for another great tutorial Nick.
wow!!! that is pretty cool! I've watched the video and followed step by step ( which of course took me almost two hours, but in my defense I've never done anything like this), and I finally figure it out! came out pretty cool!!! Thanks!!! I just had to search (a lot) how to save the brushes on gimp using MacBook.....but is all good now! Thanks a bunch!
Fantastic tutorial. It is imperative you use a very high res photo ( link u provided was great for these ) otherwise u don't get the eyes and certain detail coming through I found. I manages to create a really decent first design after about an hour of playing around. Thanks!
in case somebody is wondering "why can't i apply layer mask" at 10:00 ??? it is because you have not added it. the version nick is using probably didn't need to add the mask separately. so, you will need to add the layer mask after you apply the gradient tool and before starting to apply the brush tools, somewhere around 4:20. how do you add it? right click on the new layer you created with white color, and select add layer mask. and then continue with rest of the tutorial.
i have been looking at this forever, i did a step by step followed along, and i cannot get the white smoke to appear on the layer you have it on. i have flipped the colors tried it on different layers and everything i personally could think of. i'm very new to the program you are using and have no idea how to finish my image
Thanks for the video, Nick. My first foray into using Gimp. so a little fast for me. I didn't get it to work exactly like yours, not all my smoke came out on the end product (not sure why), and what did came out white. I'll have to go back and try again. Cheers.
Jessii Schmidt I didn't think I had, but I flipped the backgrounds and got the smoke to appear as black. So I must have inadvertently done it. Thanks for your reply.
Thank You. Finally A tutorial with simple & complete instructions to follow ABC... Really would like to make a short animation with the smoke effect somehow.
There were a lot of people complementing you before me, but... WOW! This is so f*cking COOL! THANKS for the tutorial, I'll try to use this as often as Ipossibly can! :D
Thank you so much Nick, I found your channell today and became instant sub! You are awesome at teaching these tutorials!!! Thank you so much my friend!
Heyo. Love this video! I'm having trouble with my brushes...when I click, instead of showing through the image below, I'm just getting the smoke effect in what ever colour I've got set. Hope you can help me :)
I was unable to complete the last step. I was able to apply layer mask, merge down and alpha to selection. I also deleted the layer, but nothing happens when I press delete on the keyboard. Help me! Thank you
Very HAPPY with this video- people with my disability (A.D.D) attention def (yea, I know phht) have a hard time remembering stuff and this video made my photo come out great, so thank you sir- very much appreciated!
Hi Nick i have a big question, if i wanna use your technic but use the smoke and the logo face behing as a PNG logo do i have to do the same and just remove something or i have to make it differently, I tried something but i cannot find the right solution i need help Thank you !
Old but gold! wonder how effective gimp would be today for this for fancier stuff :D As i just got myself a steam deck, and wanna be able to photoshop on it on the go :P
As always Nick if it weren't for you I wouldn't know anything about Gimp or Inkscape, thanks a lot. For some reason when I try and change the smoke effect to white it doesn't work when following your steps, it works for the soft brush but not the any of the smoke brushes. Any idea?
Thanks, Nick, I was about to give up on Gimp but you are a good teacher and I got one of these done, tho I did cheat a bit. I smudged the edges of the pic first then added my layer, lol but it looks great and now I feel I can do more and keep going thanks again
Hi there, So I am a web designer and I found your channel today, I am quite interested in the brushed and tried installing them but they said that the files in unknown to GIMP?
Thank you so much for your awesome tutorials. I have a problem with coloring in the mask layer. at 6:50 to 6:20-ish you are reversing the smoke to white and applying. when I try this it continues to paint in the smoke effects as black. I have tried multiple times but whether I put the color at white or black the smoke still fills in as black...frustrating. anyone else run into this?
when i go to the link it said not for commercial use , i want to know if we download that brushes and make an art with it . then use that art for commercial use is it illegal . . . . .please solve my query .
Reallt need help!! going well so far but been sat here for hlurs trying to figure out why when i use soft brush to make the features of face come through all i get is black? HELP PLEASE XO
I’m new to Gimp and this is a great tutorial to see the different kinds of things you can do in that program. Have you seen the watercolor splatter silhouettes that are all over Etsy and Pinterest? I would love to learn how to do that. Any chance you could do a tutorial for that? Thanks!
If I was to use my own photo, would it work if the model wasn't wearing black and didn't have a black background? Or are those two things, a must have?
Hey Nick, could you help me? I followed every step completely through, and right when I went to use the brush I won't show up. GIMP registers it as if I did use it, but it never shows the smoke after clicking. Edit: Never Mind, figured it out.... great tutorial!
Hi Nick, Your video on how to make an image to have a smoke effect is awsome, but I'm having trouble with my project where I want that there would be a skull made out of smoke (more frankly cigarette smoke). The problem is when I try to have a trasparent image the skull looks incomplete because is being cut off where the skull image ends. Do you know how to by pass this? One way i though of how to do it is to make two masks one for the skull it self and onther for skulls sides that I would look more realistic. But in this way it would be very dificult because there is a lot of small places that the smoke has to pass through. Any suggestions will do.
I have just downloaded Gimp just to do this effect. What a world we live in... Gimp free, inkscspe free and Nicks tutorials free. Wow! Let that sink in. Thanks to all 3 of the above. Much appreciated guys.
yup apps for poor people like me haha

I have been wanting to learn how to create this effect for an album cover. I woke up this morning and found this video on my news feed. You make fantastic content AND you also have a new subscriber! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)
Gimp seems to have come along in recent years. I used to find it really restrictive but looking at your tutorials it shows how far it has come.
To be fair I never found it very restrictive. I'd like to know if you can make a tutorial for gimp with a photo that you can torn in a couple of pieces ???
1:44 This dude's got mad "world weary detective" vibes. Also kinda looks like a character portrait for Baldur's Gate. LOL

Hi there, So I am a web designer and I found your channel today, I am quite interested in the brushed and tried installing them but they said that the files in unknown to GIMP?
Is the orientation of the brush fixed or can you rotate/flip the brush ? Like in this example the smoke orientation
Thank you so much for your awesome tutorials. I have a problem with coloring in the mask layer. at 6:50 to 6:20-ish you are reversing the smoke to white and applying. when I try this it continues to paint in the smoke effects as black. I have tried multiple times but whether I put the color at white or black the smoke still fills in as black...frustrating. anyone else run into this?
i have the same problem. did you find a solution? if i use another brush at actually works... just not with the smoke brushes
Great tutorial...is there any way to used a pre saved smoke affect shape only in order to combine it onto a different face...if that makes sense?
awesome sauce - never thought of the transparency trick
when i go to the link it said not for commercial use , i want to know if we download that brushes and make an art with it . then use that art for commercial use is it illegal . . . . .please solve my query .
Reallt need help!! going well so far but been sat here for hlurs trying to figure out why when i use soft brush to make the features of face come through all i get is black? HELP PLEASE XO

could you redo this tutorial please as gimp has changed a lot bucket fill. drag to scale etc or am i missing something?
My tutorial video for how to install these brushes: ruclips.net/video/X92Tw5-jWTE/видео.html
sucks to say but Facebook lowers the quality automatically . Best bet is exporting in Png format.
Nick Saporito i've been searching for someone like you you're amazing really
hi Im having a problem the center of the third layer is black to gray to white i can't make white to gray like you do any ideas
can u please make an entire gimp explanation from beginning ?
Awesome honorable señor!!
Great tutorial man!! I love all your tutorials!
I dont knwo if you will see this but is it possible to do with color smoke i cant seem to get it off of doing just white and black
Great! thanks nick, your tutorial is very helpful and so easy to understandable
thanks a lot!!! so nice reverb
you could recreate this using a blender smoke effect , and using the alpha mask of the blender smoke render as a the mask layer in gimp
Hey Nick, could you help me? I followed every step completely through, and right when I went to use the brush I won't show up. GIMP registers it as if I did use it, but it never shows the smoke after clicking.
Edit: Never Mind, figured it out.... great tutorial!
what was your fix? I'm trying to use the brush but its not smoke at all its just a blotchy pattern
Thank you man for sharing this stuff
Hello sir, do you have a tutorial like this but with color? I would really appreciate it if you have. Thanks in advance sir.
Hi Nick,
Your video on how to make an image to have a smoke effect is awsome, but I'm having trouble with my project where I want that there would be a skull made out of smoke (more frankly cigarette smoke). Could you make a video on how to download gmic on gimp. I tried doing it,but it didn't work
Love you bro!!! Excellent Work!!!
Hey. Great tutorial but I have questions : Why I can't scale smoke brush and why that brush is created as a separated layer?
Edit: I have Gimp 2.10.18
