  • Hi, welcome to Electric Car Australia. In this educational EV video I do a very detailed demonstration of the Fronius Wattpilot Go J22, a portable EVSE (or EV Home Charger) in Eco mode using solar only to charge my first generation MG ZS EV.
    The demo also includes the use of, and integration with, both the Fronius Solar.Wattpilot App and Fronius Solar.Web Solar PV App and Desktop including the configurable reports and downloads possible. I also go through Firmware updates for the Wattpilot and Solar PV Desktop. It's a long video to comprehensively cover as much detail as I could. You should find it useful so let me know in the comments section what you thought.
    This is the third video in our series looking at the Fronius portable EVSE charger so make sure you Subscribe and hit that Bell icon so you don't miss our next educational EV videos.

    Glad you've pointed out that on single phase this (and all) EVSE would be limited to ~7kw, for the full fat 22kw you need three phase. I think that gets overlooked in some of the other reviews of the unit I've seen. That said, I'm not sure why you would buy this specific charger unless you had a Fronius inverter as there are much cheaper portable 32a EVSE units if it's the portability aspect you're after. The main selling point of this charger I believe is PV-only charging and you need to weigh up if that's worth it to you. Personally, yes, as I have 12kw of solar and most goes to waste.
    Pretty much any EV can do time of day/tariff charging straight from your wall plug, you don't need "smart" EVSE for that.

    Thanks for the video!
    One optimisation I'd suggest, is a 5-pin socket can be installed (in place of 3-pin socket) with only one phase, neutral and ground pins connected. And save on additional (5-to-3 pin) adapter, making it redundant.
    Of course, you would have to know which pin the single phase needs to be wired to for this charger.

      Hi Oleg, thanks for watching. Yes I thought of that and looked into it but the local electricity/network providers don't allow it so didn't want to risk home insurance coverage if something happened down the track. A public RUclips channel showing something not legal would also not be a good look!
      As an FYI - phase pin 1 is the single phase live for the EVSE.

      @@ElectricCarAustralia I'm in NSW and a local electrician installed one for me to use with a 5-pin tail for Testa UMC. Perhaps rules are different in QLD. By the way, Pin1 is the pin used for Tesla UMC as well. Kind regards.

      Yes, rules are different in the SE corner of Qld. Energex our energy distribution company has a couple of weird ides which I don't believe are found anywhere else in the country.

      @@ElectricCarAustralia Hi! Viewer from Europe. :) Does this mean in case of 3 phase it can't select the phase with the highest excess power for a single phase charging? In my case I have a 6kWp system which is distributed on the 3 phases evenly (if I understand it correctly) but the 3 phases have different loads so the available excess solar power is changing all the time depending on the load usage in the house. It would be nice if it could select the best phase for a single phase charging... but I guess it could be a limitation on the car side if the actual charger is not able to take single phase on the other pins. (Now that I think about it the EVSE could redirect power to pin 1 in that case from any phases) Thanks for the detailed video!

    I hate it when manufacturers of these apps insist on serving you information when the Internet is connected. Why not just feed the info directly bypassing the Internet - just using your local wifi. All the hardware is there to do that but they want to have you by the short and curlies. Disgusting practise.

    Great video, Thank you so much! I have a question. I have 6.6kw solar system and 5kw sungrow inverter, is it worth buying home charger or just use granny charger as my solar exports is around 2-3.5kw when water heater is not consuming. Car is MG EV (44kw). Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    • @ElectricCarAustralia
      @ElectricCarAustralia  Год назад

      Hi, thanks for watching and the comment. Really depends on your driving needs and how quick you want to charge. But if only doing low kms and the main game is using solar I would suggest just a 10 or 15amp granny charger, but keep in mind you need to manually control it. Smart chargers are great but in your case probably not going to give payback on the cost of the charger. Cheers

      Hi Ador, thanks for watching and the question. Any Fronius Solar PV/Inverter Installer can supply them. Alternatively give you local EV Charger installer a call or do a quick Google search, there are a couple resellers selling them online. Cheers

    Can a home owner (with or without Fronius inverters) commission the unit themselves?
    If you made a 15amp tail what is stopping it trying to draw more than 15amps? ( Other than the circuit breaker on the 15amp circuit)

    • @ElectricCarAustralia
      @ElectricCarAustralia  Год назад

      Hi spuddy, thanks for watching and the Support. Yes you can set it up yourself via the App and the specific unit details which come on a card (looks like a plastic credit card) with the unit.
      I believe the unit auto detects the available current so no mater what the setting it won't pull more than the circuit. Having said that I haven't tested so might be worth check with Fronius or an installer first.

    • @bradlainson8051
      @bradlainson8051 5 месяцев назад

      . @ElectricCarAustralia There's no such thing as detecting current available, as it's like measuring the flow of a river when it's stopped by a dam. The current can only be measured when it's flowing. Also fitting a 15 AMP plug is illegal, it must be 32A plug and socket for this device. A 15A adapter must have a rated breaker installed before the wall plug as the cabling is protected by the breaker.

    If I use the Wattpilot Go22 on single phase supply, can my type 2 - type 2 cable be a single phase one? Ie I don't need to be using a heavier 3-phase cable. (My car is limited to 7kW)

    • @ElectricCarAustralia
      @ElectricCarAustralia  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, you can use either cable. The Wattpilot auto detects cable capacity and limits current.

    In respect to a single fronius unit in a 3 phase home: in combination with a Fronius smart meter, can the unit monitor which phases in the home are in use and draw current from the least used phases, thus helping to balance loads between phases?
