    I do like the CSR/Gold setup until you decide to add the Platinum. At that point the CSR has too much overlap with Amex to justify the $450 upfront costs. I think the best approach at that point is to replace CSR with The Ink Preferred, still have 3x travel, travel protection, and transfer partners for a much more modest annual fee.

      I have a CSR/AP/AG as my main 3, Freedom and Discover IT for my 5X categories, and a 2% Cash Back from Citi for catch all.
      The only reason I would recommend this is if you're like me, and value Delta Lounge access and live near a Delta Hub (or Centurion Lounge).
      After all the credits, I eat my AP's actual cost back in a few trips at lounges.
      Since CSR overlaps with AP I have an effective cost of $150 left over that I must overcome before the 3X means anything.
      I justify it at the moment via Primary CDW when I do car rentals a few times a year.

    This is my setup with some other no annual fee cards. The more I think about how Amex plays games with credits the more annoyed I get with them. I've been looking into ways to get 5X on groceries through the freedom and ink business cash so I can cancel the Gold. I would prefer all of my spending to be earning UR.

    The airline credits are now very difficult to use. This is definitely influencing me to consider the Chase route. Where the CSP is much cheaper than CSR, the CSR does have a great, easily usable travel credit.

    When there's an overlap in rewards categories, that's where you want those cards to have Statement Due Dates that are two weeks apart. It gives more flexibility for purchases and payments.

    I'm trying the CSR + BCP pair. I prefer to use Chase for travel/dining and like using Amex for cash back in groceries/gas. I'll probably put miscellaneous spend on CSR since I don't feel like a third card and use Chase Shopping Portal every chance I get.

    So I got to this set up without really meaning to, and I have to say it works for me really well. Even with just the CSP. I have the CSP, freedom, and freedom unlimited, and added the amex gold because I couldn’t justify the Amex platinum with my spending habits, and while I got the CSP initially to try to upgrade to the CSR, I think I found my sweet spot of yearly fees/returns. Thanks for making a video on this Sebby I thought I was crazy for this combo!

    I have looked upon gold card due to its popularity, but turned down for a few reasons. I don't go out to eat that much (or try not to) and shop at costco for grocery. 4x grocery and restaurant is useless since costco only takes visa. Also, I don't like the gold card's monthly $10 dining credit. If you are obligated to spend that money each month, you will likely spend more than $10 each time, and it's basically training you to spend more money outside. Last but not least, I don't think gold card is good for early credit builder. As Sebby mentioned, there is no downgrade path like csp (to freedom or unlimited), and so you are stuck paying that annual fee until cancellation, which is not good for your credit.

    • @TonyYiu
      @TonyYiu 4 года назад +4

      Happened to me and had regular travel insurance (with trip delay), this is not covered by “trip delay” but rather it needs to be covered by “missed connection” insurance, it’s pretty sneaky by the insurance companies so make sure you look for that exact wording. I was delayed only for 2 hours fight, missed my connecting flight and they weren’t able to rebook me until 2 days out. Needless to say, my policy didn’t have “missed connection” insurance.

    I use the CSR+Amex EDP set up. Restaurants and travel go on the CSR, groceries and gas on the EDP. I spend a lot at grocery stores so I've been able to get a lot of value from the EDP since it only has a $95 af. So far this year I've already earned about 25,000 MR points with the EDP

    • @ArcadeOne
      @ArcadeOne 5 лет назад

      Do you mind explaining your logic with the EDP? The way I’m looking at it, you need to spend about $3000 on groceries just to cover the AF (I’m valuing the points at 1 cent). That leaves only $3,000 per year that you can profit from and gain 9,000 MR points. Even if you count all 6,000 eligible dollars per year, that would be a total of 18,000 MR points at 3x per dollar.

    Great video review, I am considering applying for one three American Express Green, Gold, and Platinum cards. I just have a few questions on the best strategy for which I can apply to one of the three cards and later either downgrade or upgrade to the next. If I was approved for the Green card and was ended up earning the eligible welcome bonus to the card, next year wish to upgrade to the Gold card; am I eligible for whatever possible bonus that card may offer in the future? Does a similar strategy work out in the opposite; or is there a particular stipulation to receiving a welcome bonus if you received it from a different card the previous year, are not a new customer, and or need to wait a given period to qualify for the bonus again?

    I have been a cash back kind of guy until recently. I am trying to start earning points for future travel at least once a year with my wife. So currently I have the CSP and freedom unlimited but have been looking into either getting the Gold or Platinum. Which combo would you recommend? Getting the CSR? (I don’t think I would be eligible for the bonus since I have the CSP) or the gold or platinum?

    I’ve really enjoyed this combo. There is a lot of value to this combo, it just takes time to learn to maximize it

      Really? I think it makes no sense when you have 2 cards that kinda do the same.

      CastrejonHDTV I’ll say exactly what I said before - I love this combo. I’ve gotten a ton of value from it because I learned to maximize it. If you don’t invest the time to learn HOW to maximize, it’s not worth it.
      I never intended to keep both long term, but I’ve gotten way more value than I expected from running them in tandem.

      Wampler Photo can you explain how you use it? CSP for travel and Amex gold for food?

    • @richardvanfrank8114
      @richardvanfrank8114 4 года назад +2

      @@TuongNguyen-mx9nu CSP for all travel and airfare with a Freedom for 5x categories and a Freedom Unlimited for general spend, and AMEX Gold for groceries (including airline gift cards) and all dining. CSP as a backup for situations where a restaurant does not accept an AMEX. This is the combo I am running except I have a CSR instead of a CSP. I may downgrade my CSR to CSP if the CSR fee is raised to $550 as rumored.

    I wish Amex would just drop the 100 airline credit and lower the annual fee accordingly on the Gold card. It also makes no sense to offer 3x on airfare when the Platinum card is 5x. Maybe instead offer 1.5 x back on everything to compete with the FU. An Amex card that offers more than 1x on direct hotel purchase would be nice also. It makes no sense to give Hilton and Marriott status and then force the charges to another card to get status benefits and the corporate rates I get as well. That being said I really like Amex but there’s lots of gaps in X back and certain insurance that Chase and others offer.

      cherrygarciafan Amex makes tons of money off people who don’t use all the benefits of the card, so while I agree with you, it’s unlikely this will happen :(

      I find the $100 Gold AMEX airline credit easy to use. It covers checked bags for one trip. I am flying to Cancun in March for a week on Delta. The $100 will be used to pay checked bags for me and my GF. I am getting some great MR offers. 5x MR on Amazon and Sam's Club purchases. 1,5OO MR for spending $50 at California Pizza Kitchen etc. The points really add up.

    Funny story, I ran into a problem that I need tons and tons of purchasing power to buy high end Rolex watches to my family member and clients, I'm talking about at least 25K per watch every other two weeks, so Amex charge cards comes in really handy in my situation, even just 1X MR for those watches. The combined total credit limit of all my chase cards won't even cover the price of one watch. Sad face, I want more UR points to have some flexibility in redemptions, but it's just not possible to get tons of URs!!!

    How much time should I wait between signing up for a business card and a personal card?
    I have an excellent credit score (upper 700's). I got my first card a few years ago. I got my first Chase card (freedom unlimited) 10 months ago. I got a business card (ink Preferred) 1.5 months ago. When should I sign up for the Chase Freedom?

  • @PCBfighting

    Amex mailed an offer to me for 50k Gold card bonus that expires at end of this month (Aug 2019) but I gonna pass for now. With the crackdown on not being able to use the Gold's incidental travel credit for airline gift cards.. I don't think I gonna get good value for the AF. I just earned my 50k bonus for CSR... and I think gonna get Chase Freedom Unlimited next instead. Gonna take advantage of the 3x bonus on 1st $20k spent. Since Plastiq will now recognize rent payments on Chase Visa as legit instead of cash advances.. I feel this is my best play. I live in major city and rent is $3k/mo. Figure its worth it for the Chase UR points.
